This is one hell of a Top 10 list. For me my hands down favorite knife purchase for 2023 is also my new favorite knife, the WE Ziffius. Picked up the black titanium/anodized blue lightning/satin blade variant and loved it so much I also picked up the Hakkapella Damasteel variant with the same handle. Wow what a perfectly executed and drop dead beautiful knife.
I'm only going to buy one knife this year, since I have a little excess funds. It is going to be my first premium knife, and it has all the things I was on the lookout for when it comes to an expensive knife; it's the MKM Miura. It's an integral titanium buttonlock, thumbstud opening, M390 sheepsfoot blade. Really looking forward to it getting released, and I hope they reach out to you with a sample for review.
That Skiff has the best visual flow I've ever seen in a knife. The lines of the damacore lead perfectly into the the wavy milling across the handle. So good.
Wow! Those are some real beauties!!! Where do you (and anyone else that wants to chime in) purchase knives on the secondary market, other than EBay? Most of the time the things I find on EBay cost more than I can buy them new if they are still in stock anywhere.
I spent a grip o cash on two Strider production knives, including the SMF, and both have insane lock stick. Like, pull back on the blade with one hand and use two fingers on other hand to push-pull the lock bar. Anything I can do about it? I’ve got $35 Kubeys with better action!
I’m surprised to not see any Chaves on this list. I picked up the cranes exclusive w/ damasteel and mokuti based on your video and it’s by far my favorite knife I own!
I’m wondering what the rest of the year will show us and if there’s going to be models that might knock some of them out of the lineup for this year!!????
I usually agree with you Metal Complex but I had a Hoghouse Veli from the first run, it’s definitely not in the same league as Koenig and Herman! Action was off even with skiffs(factory bearings are horrendous), slightly off center no matter how much I adjusted, multiple multiple sharp edges. I was super excited to get it and maybe they have resolved those issues since the one you have is the updated, what I would call gen 1.5, at least I hope they sorted it out bc they are super nice guys with great communication.
Hi! We havent got any contact from you regarding about those issues you say. If the action is of, it would go under our guarantee for sure. 😊 -Tapio / Hog House
@@TSyrjalaknives You are correct I never contacted you regarding Veli #2 and if I did I’m sure you would have attempted/resolved most of the issues. But instead of shipping it halfway across the world again and possibly still not be happy in the end, I did what I do with most knives and cut my losses. I’m sure the next person will be in love with it and not see any issues. I’m just very particular and it’s increasingly difficult for me to find knives I truly love from any price range. I would surely buy again from you if you make another model that interests me. I also didn’t mean any disrespect when I said my sample set of 1 was not a Koenig or a Herman, it just wasn’t there but I know you will get there, if you aren’t there already.
I’m actually thinking about having my evo 3.0 reground. I scratched the hell out of my hand rubbed blade and I like the belt satin better. Then I’m gonna have it DLC coated.
Lucky enough to snag one of the evo DLC and hands down my favorite knife EVER! Kills me to carry it but would kill me more to not lol. I’ve wanted one since the 1.0 and so glad I didn’t over pay for the 2.0 that was too small IMO. Best knife ever!!!
What an awesome list! I can concur many of your choices since I've also acquired 6 out of the 10 knives you showed this year, albeit in different versions. The Synpase XL (my second Vero, but man is it a great knife, beautiful action too), the DLC Socom Bravo (but the drop point version, I really don't like tanto's tbh), the diamond ti Atom, the Hog House Veli in gold crystallized ti (can heartily recommend Hog House to everyone, such amazing people), the CKF Eagle Rock (#001 of the red cf version :)), and the F3 NS but from the secondary market in purple CF. I did not get the Rotten Evo from CKF as I really don't think it is that interesting of a design, but I did get the Marauder, which became my favorite CKF. I own different high-end knives, but to be honest, I have found that my CKF knives are usually just as good in terms of action, execution, fit and finish, while usually being quite a bit cheaper. They are really becoming my favorite knife brand of all time 🤘
I see your are missing the fixed knife and slip-joint experiences. If you like to BBQ, consider a big fixed blade knife with a blade thickness around .093" like the Bark River Mountain Man (with liners and mosaic pins). Amazing value compared to folders. Cheers.
come on man he doesn't hunt his food and live in the forest. He has expensive taste which can get you the best and prettiest. No one cares about survival tools that grandpa recommends the sexiest knives these days are folders. Not gonna see exotic metals on a fixie
Amazing list. The T1000 blew me away. Not so much that it's a chunky monkey, but the milling and cutouts and edges and treatments, - that's a lot of craftsmanship right there. Also love the blade. Thanks for showing as most of us will never get to handle these knives - your reviews and vids are a great alternative. Sharp blades all.
Metal complex I heard you say you’re not the biggest fan of 20cv and m390. What steels do you prefer? I’ve recently been looking to get a 20cv m390 knife for premium knife steel edc. What’s the best high quality steel for edc in your opinion?
I’m not MC, I don’t have a collection like his, and I don’t have as much experience in collecting knives. But I can give you my opinion on the steels you should be looking for! Firstly, 20CV and M390 are just fine (as long as they’re heat treated properly). MC doesn’t mind them but, just like many people, he’s tired of every knife maker using those 2 compositions. And MANY people OVERRATE M390/20CV. That said, if you don’t want to go with M390/20CV, I’ll list a few options for you below in different tiers. (HRC = Heat Treat/Steel Hardness) Best Premium Steels w/ High Stainless Properties: 1. MagnaCut - For thin/slicey blades, 63-65 HRC is ideal. For fixed blades/overbuilt folders, 60-63 HRC is ideal. For folders with moderately thick blade stocks, 62-64 HRC is ideal. (MagnaCut is very versatile, it can be used for every application depending on HRC. It’s basically the only steel that’s really tough, has great edge retention, and very corrosion resistant) 2. LC200N - This steel is almost as tough as CPM 3V (one of the toughest high-end steals) but, almost completely corrosion resistant. Easy to resharpen but, edge retention is mediocre (60 HRC is necessary). 3. Vanax - Maxed out on corrosion resistance (more than LC200N), tougher than M390/20CV, and edge retention between S35VN & M390. (60-62 HRC is ideal) 4. S90V - Just as tough as M390/20CV but, has much higher edge retention. And it’s also on the higher end of corrosion resistance. (59-61 HRC recommended but, capable of reaching up to 66 HRC) Best Premium Tool Steels/High Speed Steels: (More Balanced) 1. CPM 3V 2. CPM CruWear 3. CPM M4 4. Vanadis 4 Extra or CPM 4V 5. CPM 10V (Not Balanced/High Edge Retention) 1. Rex 121 2. Maxamet 3. CPM 15V 4. ZDP-189 Best “More Affordable” Steels: 1. 14C28N (Stainless) 2. AEB-L (Stainless) 3. Nitro-V (Stainless) 4. K390 (Tool/High Speed) 5. S35VN (Stainless) Ps. If you can tell me what you’re looking for exactly (EDC folder or fixed blade), I could narrow it down for you. Personally, if you truly want “Premium” steel, the first 4 (stainless) and first 5 (tool/high speed) are your best bet!
And another question… how do you manage not going crazy … I have 7 pocket knife and I think 7 fixed blades … and I am on the verge on sanity… why …. Because I always want to use the things I own… so At the end of the day I would love to have only one… but a damn good one ☝️
Well that's because polishing DLC is facking hard. It's the same reason why actual gemstones and getting them cut and polished makes him so much more expensive because the process is so labor intensive that that's where a significant chunk of value comes from. That and the artificial scarcity. I've handled the G-Shock MRG square with the mirror polish DLC and it's magnificent. Edit: and it's a $4,000 G-Shock so... Yeah just processing DLC into a polished form is not easy. Also because DLC isn't like super thick as a coating if you polish it too far you polish it off.
Interesting list. Had no idea about the Russian knives or why they may be compelling options for some collectors. I liked only one of the knives shown. It's great that there are so many designs and makers out there, to satisfy so many different tastes. Great work as usual.
That specific CKF Rotten Evo is effin bananas! I'd literally trade 20 to 25 of my knives for it even though I'd be taking a loss monetarily because it's just that awesome!!
They have been slow rolling that t1000 so hard. I'm sad they aren't going to have the black timascus for regular sale but I cannot wait to get my hands on one regardless. So cool to see you showing it off :) Does yours have the recurve on the blade still or do the production models have a regular flat blade now?
The Socom Bravo is cool, but IMO the Elite is a much better knife. The Bravo is too thick BTE to actually cut things. Great list tho, I LOVE that Shiro
