- In this video, After the Burial's Justin Lowe performs a song off their latest release, 2013's "Wolves Within", and also explains his experience with the new Ibanez RG90BKP 9-string electric guitar.
Rest in Peace Justin Lowe.
After The Burial is a progressive metal band from Twin Cities, MN. Their music features the use of extended-range instruments, such as 7 and 8-string guitars and alternate tunings to showcase the impressive range of their Ibanez instruments. As two of the first adopters of the 8-string RG models, ATB's guitarists Justin Lowe and Trent Hafdahl continue to push the limits of what's possible on electric guitar, while bassist Lee Foral uses his BTBs to help build a foundation to the band's heavy sound.
Just here to let you know you aren’t forgotten Justin, forever a legend. RIP
Rip🙏🏼
🖤
Got to see him live when I was a teenager, a loss never needed. RIP
I don't think they will play certain songs live anymore. "Neo Seoul" and "To Carry You Away" are probably too painful emotionally.
Rest In Peace Brother 🤘 🎵
Anyone else come back to this from time to time?
So fucking sad but he was just such a phenomenal musician and had such insane rhythm writing.
RIP Justin and hope everyone is safe during quarantine
just came back for this reason. RIP
Me too 😭
Same here, one of my favorite songs and guitarist! ATB hasn't been the same without him IMO. I have only seen like one person cover this song without butchering it, says alot about Justin's talent!
That is why I am here now. Fucking hell I miss him, and I never even met him. Wherever he may be now, I just hope he knows how many lives he had a positive impact upon, including my own. His music helped me at my absolute lowest lows.
Multiple times a year, really miss Justin; such an amazing musician.
RIP buddy, hope you're playing guitar with the greats now.
Dimebag darrelle \m/
isOceans My god, he was friggin' amazing. \m/
isOceans Chuck and Justin. If their is an after life, I hope those two are jamming together.
Aberrate He's probably taking lessons with Randy Rhoads right now.
He is probably teaching the greats to incorporate their guitar playing into a 8 string :')
Man I can't even finish this video anymore without tearing up. Rest easy brother.
Dickeyfighter7861 Same :(
Dickey7861 as a fellow dick head I feel the same justin was unbelievable on guitar
Dickey7861 oh i know. It still upsets me.
Too soon man too soon
I did it know Austin listened to ATB
Dickey7861 ditto man, still bums me out major
A true master of his craft. Unfortunately some of the greatest minds are some of the most unstable as well. rest in peace Justin
Daniel Himebauch You are right and that is why when you hear their Art its Real Passion
Yeah man, my heart breaks for this guy. Such a creative player. He also wrote all the electronic stuff in ATB songs... That touch will be missed on future albums.
Daniel Himebauch well said
How do we know he wasn't telling the truth?
@moto toad if you actually knew the truth you wouldn't be saying this. Although I wasn't close with Justin I was friends with Nick (the original singer) and knew a few of the other guys. I use to live in Kansas and helped them get a few shows in the early days... Justin was suffering from pretty severe depression mixed with schizophrenia. He thought his own band mates, family and friends were out to get him, thought people were trying to frame him for inappropriate crimes (I'd rather not say on here)...
TLDR: He was not well and everyone knew this and tried to help him. But sadly sometimes it's not enough. RIP Justin🙏
Fuck, this makes me so sad now :(
to this day...
Same bro
Fckin actor
I've been listening to After the Burial for a while now, never knowing anything about the band members - until somewhat recently. I say this because for me, It feels weird watching a lot of these nine year old videos for the first time. Having this feeling of "being late to the show"...digging up the past, kinda.
Dude, Andrew, that cover for Aspiration is awesome! So cool that you guys did that.
You and Justin are a huge motivation / inspiration for my 8 string guitar playing.
After the Burial is awesome! Carcosa is fucking epic! Super stoked to see you guys jam in Seattle this summer! XD
Please keep up the great work!
There's something so satisfying about that lowest string.
Definitely get an RG9 if you can find one. I bought one used for $550 (shipping included) and I love it! The low C# growls like nothing else.
I was literally about to comment this lol
you dont sayyyyyyyyyy
i could listen to that riff all day.....
Came here to pay my respects. Left as a fan.
Didn't know him or the band. But heard the news and thought I should hear his stuff to show my respect.
Jordans Monkey I feel bad that I didn't check them out before this tragedy happened
Same here, such an amazing player....
Jordans Monkey These guys were a huge influence to me as a guitarist. :(
***** The sad thing about paranoid schizophrenia is that it can lie dormant inside your genetics for years then suddenly hit you when you get to a certain age. He may have been going through problems for a while, who knows, but they definitely got worse towards the end.
+m2350 Regardless of any of mental health problems he may have had, he was an amazing guitarist/ musician. Lets all remember him that way. He was truley an inspiration. To the people that listened to his music, to his friends and to his own band. *sigh* All who have met him, or even seen him in the flesh know that this is a deep wound that will take a long time to heal. But at the same time, it brings us all together as a metal community. Thank you for all the kind words/ intentions towards Justin.
Ive never cried for someone who i never really knew passing away. After the breakdown he had a week or 2 ago, i was hoping everything would be ok, and it was just abit of a lapse for him. Then i heard he was missing. His sister found his car. Police were searching for a few days. I knew what had happened deep inside me, but i didnt want to admit it. I saw the news 4 hours ago... i sat there for half an hour, just looking at one picture of him, crying. Its hard to take in. Still feels completely surreal. Im happy i got to see him before he passed, he played the intro to beserker behind his head. Ha, amazing. I just wish i could've been there for him. I will truly miss the guy.
R.I.P Justin Lowe. If only you knew how many people were willing to help you, how many people you've helped through your music and relaxed personallity. Maybe things wouldve been different.
+Liam Yates It still breaks my heart
+Liam Yates Me too.
Suicide? Man this is horrible
I literally feel the same way. I've never empathized with someone i didn't know this much. Every single year I think about his death and it's like my soul knows the day of his passing. I'll listen to neo seoul around the same time just to see his death date is near without even knowing
I had the exact same experience when that happened years ago. Still makes me tear up. Part of my connection to him although never meeting him was inspiring me to get an 8 string. I heard them back on myspace in 2006. I saw them in 2008 and they had 8 strings and were so loud. I loved it, that change my life. I just got my nine string and brought me back here. Exactly like he said, not my main guitar now, but such an awesome tool to get some unique sounds. RIP Justin.
I came here to cry.
Anto Lo Scarso a COD No shame... Same, man... I can relate to Justin, as I have mental issues of my own...
M. Hunter-Bathory I hope you're in a place where you can trust people around you and these people are always supportive.
me too
Rest in peace Justin. You will never know how sorely your creativity will be missed by me your band was the reason i bought an 8 string in the first place.
Same here man. It's blows.
Linius Von Grimm you never really think how tortured a person really is until something really bad like this happens
dannyzep92 Same for me. Huge influence on me. He's up in the clouds rocking the world.
If you read his exit note he wrote when he left less then a month ago with the fact in mind that he passed so soon afterwards it makes me wonder what really happened. He specifically said that he was putting himself in danger by saying some of the things he did, and he also stated that "he's being set up by forces greater then law enforcement". Regardless of what really happened Justin was an amazing guitarist and a great guy. He helped shape a new wave of metal and the best we can do is honor is memory and let his legacy live on
daneyp25 He is schizophrenic... he was having a psychotic episode, it has nothing to do with what he was writing. Learn about mental illness and respect his memory instead of being a conspiracy theorist.
Anyone still here in 2019?
We all miss you so much Justin. rest easy bro ❤
Missed very much..pure musical talent not many riffs like the riffs this dude created. Such a shame
2020 - Rest in peace Justin!
Here still in 2021!
2021 Gang checking in. Huge loss.
2021 Much love and respect. Such a good musician. Rest easy
I'll never forget just hanging with Justin in McAllen tx, before he performed I had a conversation with him about his approach to music and metal. He was so genuine in his personality and was fucking cool as hell. Even got to talk about the weather going on outside lol told me he was always fascinated by the weather, even had a Doppler rader app on his phone. Best 30 mins of the night talking to this genius and legend. RIP Justin
Saw them at the Never Say Never Fest in McAllen.....Wow! Instant fan! RIP Justin!
RIP to the legend still thinking about you in 2024 buddy thanks for the shred.
R.i.p. Justin. I know its been over 6 years since he passed but I never knew him till like October 2021 and he has become such an influential figure in my life and music playing career and I have never really had a musician make me feel at peace with just 8 strings and skill and talent.
Justin will never be forgotten, his work will echo into eternity! It's sad but it seems the most talented people die young, RIP JL
Damn. The feels. If I were his parents I would watch this all the time and would not stop thinking of how proud I was of my son.
R.I.P
This is a riff that I could listen to all day.
RIP
Depression is a sickness not a weakness. Take care of everyone you can in life because we are super fragile.
AndyNation That's beautiful man. Really, thanks for sharing that.
higler420 thanks for acknowledging man. I'm glad at least one person appreciates it.
AndyNation It was much MUCH more than depression. After reading his rant, it's obvious that he had *paranoid schizophrenia* and was having a severe and tragic delusional episode.
It wasn’t that, he was trying to tell us something and half of you fell for the bait. The things he spoke of in the letter he wrote were things that were really happening to him his band is fake and so was their label they wanted the man dead because he was about to speak out on something serious the guy wasn’t crazy. Again you guys bought the lies pertaining to him he was reaching out to everyone to let you know how evil and twisted the music industry is
@@mikemike-oq5rg idk his open letter was all over the place just a tragedy regardless...my dad passed last march so enjoy each day/second all I know is I cant wait to jam with them on the other side RIP JLowe never forgotten & thanks for the badass jams!
FINALLY a good demo of a 9 string and playing that is good AS WELL!
Hank Hill we miss the Prog Hank Hill comments.
@@LafBoithe propane business is booming. I can't always be active these days.
@@StricklandAssistantManager I hope you make a band some day and I can be like “we use to both comment on Misha Mansoor videos back in the day.” To my kids when I show them. GOBBLESS HOSS.
4 years later and I still come here. Rest in peace my brother, I hope you're in a better place. It's true what they say.....creativity and madness go hand in hand. I wish you could have known the difference in peoples lives that you made in your unfairly short amount of time here in this insane world and I, for one, am truly grateful.
One year later. Still sorely missed. You were a genius, Justin. I'll always blast ATB and make sure that my daughter knows about your music. RIP.
underrated legend
Rest In peace to an amazing musician. I had hopes to meet Justin at Summer slaughter this year. Sad to say, ill never get the chance :(
GetScaredGaming
Cant imagine whats going through Trent's head now. Him and Justin had been together in a band since high school.
GetScaredGaming really hope trent is alright
I was also stoked to see ATB @ this summers slaughter your. I keep thinking ... what really happen to him? Great musician R.I.P Justin 😪
dul2011
I think he committed suicide but not sure.
Don't speculate man. Anything could've happened
RIP "Just Tune Low" :(
Damn we not aloud to tune low now or what
@@braxtonfps3580 It's just a pun man
@@dripkingwavelord987 yeah man was probably in a shitty mood when I wrote that

2022 , still listen to this album weekly. Rest easy Justin.
Still listening in 2020. RIP Justin
Cannot stop listening to that intro. Perfect delay, creamy tone. Absolutely love it.
still come back to this video, and miss Justin so much...
If you only knew how loved you are 😔 RIP ❤
back in 2023 . RIP Justin, you are not forgotten
I come back every few months to watch this vid man
We are the intelligent/quiet ones that don't speak to much on how we REALLY feel. I have so much admiration for Justin. I can't even recall all the time I've suffered from suicidal ideation. I hope you're in a peaceful place now Justin. RIP brother, we love you and miss you very much man. I'll keep jamming my ass off for you and Dime forever.
Fucking relatable
Fav song off the new album, sounds awesome
Edit: Today is a very sad day. Justin you will be missed but you will be remembered.
Name of the song????
Dwayne Barksdale Neo Seoul :)
I wish the album version of Neo Seoul sounded as awesome as this demo.
This was a great gateway to finally getting around to listening to them. Heard about them some time ago, never heard their Music. THANKS. Good stuff! KILLER RIFFS, TOO.
Dwayne Barksdale one of their really old albums has a song called the forfeit that was what got me into them. it's different from this but still a kick ass song.
RIP Justin Lowe.
It literally says his name on this video and you can't even spell it correctly?
He missed the e wwwwooooowwww. Dude shut the fuck up for real
Glad someone asked you ^
Dammit, Hink Hall.
Kayleigh Williams Yah, he's everywhere.
Wow, I found a demo of a 9 or 8 string where someone can actually dial in a proper tone suited to the instrument.
As both justin and trent were a huge dimebag fan i hope he is jamming with him in heaven right now.
In this comment section, you will find people butthurt about how many strings a guitar should have. What people don't realize is that guitars and guitar-like instruments have had more than 6 strings for centuries. There's also no reason to limit someone's creativity and what they do with their money just because you're scared of change.
tell em.
amen brother, if you x number of strings and make awesome music with it i support you 10000%
9unslin9er no, you can't use bass for guitar track - it has too different tone
9unslin9er aww shit. bass tone is usable for bass track - no more
techdeathcurator If you can't play the 9 strings, it is just a gimmick. But in the right hands, it makes a worlds difference.
I come back to this video probably once a month. It not only sounds amazing but hits hard. Rip Justin Lowe
Those who have genius level Intellect walk a very thin and dangerous line between what is reality and what is mental illness. It was no secret this man was a genius. Rest easy, Justin.
Still come watch this every so often. This man made an impact.
Not only were his playing skills insane but his ideas for compositions and song writing as a whole was astronomically beautiful. Rest in peace \m/
2021... it's been so long.
This will live on forever.
R.I.P Justin...
God bless you Justin. I still listen to this song everyday you created a sound I've always wanted to treat my ears to and perfected it. Still hurts that your gone buddy RIP and shred away.
I miss you Justin. I play this song Every day as a tribute man. r.I.p brother
Makes me sad, every single time. That intro will always be in my mind.
here in 2024 to pay my respects to this legend! RIP Justin!
With the recent resurgence of some older metalcore bands I've been jamming to a lot of stuff I listened to while in college and directly afterwords. I think the saying "You don't know what you have until it's gone" is really hitting home with me in this video. Justin truly pushed the boundaries of what people were doing with guitars at the time and paved the way for lower tuning that has given us some really incredible music. The metal scene wouldn't be what it is now without Justin's genius - and for that I appreciate his contributions and incredible playing ability.
"First thing you gotta do is get yourself an Ibanez guitar. *The real money comes from endorsing these motherfuckers.*"
-Jawn Whitten, 2014
RIP to a legend. I met him one time and he was super nice and answered all of my questions.
Justin Lowe is the kind of musician that lifts me up and helps me get through the worst. I'm going through the worst right now, but it's getting better when he's playing the guitar.
Rest easy brother.
You got this brother. A wise man once told me "when you're going through hell.. just keep.. Going"
@@Timewaits4no1 Thank you brother. I'm doing better. Time heals everything.
I keep coming back to this vid... #Forevermissed
actually really great guitar I regret not getting into them sooner rip Justin
one of my friends used to have this thing in the past. Just holding it in your arms is a beauty itself, for real
After a break from music, I wasn't aware of Justin's very sad death. He was quite clearly a massive talent especially in this genre. Rest easy, brother. I am sure you are now at peace and shaking the walls of Valhalla with your tones.
Still on my mind brother. RIP Justin.
RIP Justin. Thank you for the inspiration, you will be missed.
I discovered this band just recently and man am I hooked!
RIP Justin Lowe. your band groove-riff inspire me a lot!!
I'll just be honest. I've been listening to ATB since at least 2006. I'm from MN, and ATB was a huge influence on my writing and style. This video fucks me up every time I watch it. I don't really like their new stuff. I never really knew Justin (more than just to say hi at their show), yet through his writing I felt that I did know him. I miss his influence a lot. I can only imagine what it's like for the people that knew him personally, like Trent, Dan, Lee. and Anthony. I applaud them for moving forward. RIP Justin Lowe 1982-2015.
Wow, listening to this now after knowing what happened really hits hard :( RIP Justin you will be missed by family, friends, and your thousands of fans that you have inspired with your music.
You'll always be missed Justin. Your playing was always the best, hope you've been playing with the greats you absolute legend.
I've watched this video more times than I can count. I've seen ATB live a handful of times and a few days ago was the first time I saw them perform without Justin. They still kill it but can't help but feel weird not seeing him up there. I'm so glad I got to witness your talent as many times as I did. Fly high, Justin.
It’s 2021 and I’m still coming back to this video😔
It sounds 200 times better than any 9 string i have heard up until this point!
Justin is really missed. A Legend and my favorite guitarist
Btw thats a dotted 8th delay at 142bpm for those that wanna know.
Tysm for this info
2024 and i still come here time to time and listen at least 10 times. RIP, Dude. Thx for the legacy.
Every time I'm with my buddy listening to music in his car on our way to the gym and Neo Seoul comes on I instinctively yell RIP Justin Lowe out the window. My buddy also hit his first 500lbs deadlift to the drop at the beginning of the song after recovering from a major illness. Justin may be gone but his spirit will live on forever.
This man inspired me to start playing 8 string with this video
It’s 2020 and we still miss you buddy 🖤
I come watch this video once a year. Rip Justin.
Justin already looks troubled here. RIP.
All this time on, and i'm sat here thinking the same thing, i never noticed before, poor guy - RIP Justin brother
only guy to make a 9 string sound melodic by riding the fuck out of that low C
This is still so surreal.
Rest in peace.
this gives me the biggest lump in my throat. can't tell if I'm happy, sad or both...
if any band right now is going to make proper use of the 9 string it is after the burial. I still think its too many but if they can make it work ill listen in.
Meshuggah will use 9s for their new Album :)
WhiteSaucage Scar Really?
PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF......
GlassCloud. That is all.
Lucek Yeah, from what I know they got some 9s from Ibby.
There is a pic or two of them holding the new 9 strings in some German magazine.
Gone but not forgotten.
The intro parts is like Language part I!
Still so many broken hearts.
Rest In Peace 🐊
Rock in peace Justin. I hope that the events surrounding this tragedy come to the light soon. Before any of you pass judgement, or call this guy mentally ill I want you to just step back, and evaluate this situation. For once try to identify with this man, and why he was feeling this way.
Trevor Philips
Why are you taking "mentally ill" as being derogatory?
Trevor Philips He was mentally ill. That's not a judgement: it's an unfortunate fact. Read his 'rant' if you haven't already. Then look up 'paranoid schizophrenia.' He fits the bill perfectly.
wylde678 Because calling him mentally ill is pretty derogatory. Just because what he had to say before he died was so far-fetched that instead of trying to relate, or identify you write it off, and called him "mentally ill". That is the biggest bullshit of it all.
nobody here can diagnose him or anyone else as mentally ill, or schizophrenic, or quite frankly, even depressed, based on one facebook rant. he could have been high, been in a fugue state, been emotional beyond the point of coherent expression, had a brain tumor, or even suffering a chemical imbalance. it's a sad situation, that requires no youtube speculation on who he was, or what "beat him" ( as was said in an interview ), or what may have happened on, around or under that bridge, unless something was criminally done to cause his death. if it gets us to pay attention to troubled individuals around us and care about people more, great, but we don't know what that man was going through. this is a loss for everyone, as when any of us passes on.
Can’t believe today marks 6 years. Rip man, show them how it’s done 😔
RIP legend ❤️ for sure made his mark in metal history.
One of the greatest riffs ever, hopefully plays for the creator
RIP Justin you were/will always be one of my favorite guitarists and have inspired me and my writing style more then most guitarists have. Your Legacy wiill continue.
Your troubles will cease and fortune will smile upon you.
It still hurts. Rest in peace brother, you will be missed :(
Rest in Peace.

2020, rest in peace brother.
I'm happy I got to meet Justin before he passed away. Super chill guy. Missed forever.
RIP man. like really, great musician and person. you will be missed.
I always comeback here to listen, maybe once a month ❤
you can hear the sorrow in his riff.. dude was going through something really hard.. no one should ever have to feel that way... this is very inspiring.. RIP
The lyrics of the song really capture sorrow as well, the song is called Neo Seoul.
CannabisKills your right bro, you can hear the sorrow but it still rocks. RIP J.L.
Isaac Monahan
thanks for that. i had no idea that was a song, it made me really happy.
+CannabisKills this song is happy and some parts are in major
+Clarkzor a song doesn't have to be in minor to feel sorrowful. but i do know what you mean. they're saying it really captured his feelings.
That verse riff should be put in the crunk riff hall of fame.I wish it was longer
Rest in Peace Justin, you were such a funny, talented and creative man who's life ended way to soon, thank you for all of the great music that you gave given to the world, you will forever be missed.
still can't believe you're gone 😢
I know I am really late to this as i became a fan of After the Burial recently but RIP Justin Lowe, one of the best guitarists in metal.
