35:49 THAT is depression, that thing that poisons your emotions, that thing that makes you unable, no matter how much you try, to feel anything, do anything, want anything
I read somewhere that this movie was considered so good it is used in classes as a sort of intro into psychology. It is also credited for being very useful in helping kids find a way to express their feelings in therapy. Bing Bong is forever a special spot in my heart.
She means so well, it hurts. She just sees a kid managing to stay positive and asking her to take on an adults role of keeping that positivity to lighten the load on the father, who clearly isn't managing things very well either. But she doesn't see deep down, just how much Riley is suffering. It hits me so hard.
I absolutely love this movie. The emotions are fun and my heart shattered when Bing Bong died. Fun fact Riley's outfits reflect the emotions she's feeling at the moment
As someone with depression, this is easily the best portrayal of what it feels like. Sadness is an emotion that you can feel, process, and move on from. Depression is... nothing. All of who you are is gone, and you're just a shell of yourself, and "just being happy" will make you collapse. It's okay to not be okay. A+++ work Pixar
This movie was so much fun specifically for the fanfiction community. Usually, when people write fanfic, it's about the characters from the original story, or at least new characters put in the same setting if the world is interesting enough. But so many Inside Out fanfictions were just applying the core concept of Inside Out to other stories, either original or lifted straight from other works. Like, a story that's just Avatar the Last Airbender, told entirely ftom the perspective of Zuko's emotions, for instance. It's a surprisingly versatile format.
oh that's actually so cool, i never thought of the possibility of crossover fics with inside out! i've seen and read many that were golden compass/his dark materials crossovers where the characters had daemons, but never where they had personified emotions like inside out. i'll have to look up some of those!
From my experience with depression, I'd say it's best represented when the console grays out and the emotions can no longer interact with it and Sadness being the only one who even has a chance of breaking through that Also I absolutely love the ending of this movie when we peek into the minds of all the different people, especially the "Girl! Girl! Girl!" alarm and the cat randomly freaking out because its Fear was walking on the console XD
It’s insane how Sorta Stupid are some of the most emotionally intelligent reactors that I’ve seen react to this movie. Already calling out that Sadneds is having her meltdown because she missed her friends and Minnesota and also calling the mom out for asking Riley to keep smiling and be happy even when it goes against how Riley is feeling. You guys are awesome!
I love how everyone has the same reaction to this film. Everyone starts off hating Sadness and by the end, they realise that all emotions, including Sadness are equally important ❤
One of the coolest things I learned when I was teaching preschool, is how our brain downloads the days experiences when we go to sleep. And when kids would have nap time during the day it would help them process all the information they'd been taking in all morning, and it helped with retention and learning and everything It was wonderful. I had to stop the video so I could come comment, I'm enjoying already watching you two with us. But don't worry, I have tissues ready cuz this is Pixar. Will and of course I've already seen it.😅
My personal theory as to why joy didnt use the tube to send the core memory to HQ is because She's either too focus on getting back in the headquarters she didnt realize she could just easily send it there, or She's not going back without the core memory or her She doesnt mind leaving sadness
Yeah Joy is very self centered she keeps going on and on “Riley needs to be happy” meaning “Riley needs me” but in reality she is just helping mask the situation Riley is in. It’s clear that Riley is very sad because she moving far away. She wants to cry and process her pain. But her Joy and the parents kinda made things worse
you are more or less right, a thing would be if any of the other emotions would handle the happy core memory, it would change and not be a happy one anymore, and joy was all about happnies
She's a control freak. Early on, whenever something happens or they look at a memory, she keeps checking on the islands to see if they are firing. So I see why she wouldn't let those out of her hands after losing them initially.
Nice to see someone realizing the importance of sadness. Most people just hate on her so much they go as far as saying sadness should fall in the memory dump because she isn’t needed and they never wonder how we would react to a loved one dying with sadness in the memory dump.
The cool thing about this movie is it gives kids (and people in general) ways to talk about emotions that make sense. It's one thing to feel a complicated emotion, it's another to be able to describe it to another person. Love this movie
This movie came out the year my cousin's family moved to Indiana from Minnesota, she was 11 and this movie absolutely destroyed her. Our aunt (not her mom, our moms' sister) took her to watch this movie when she was visiting not knowing what it was about and my cousin told me she was bawling more than she's cried for a movie because it described exactly how she was feeling.
One of the many things I love about this movie is how the music weaves through everything. Just a theme being touched on, over and over in many variations.
The central emotion of each person tells everything about one's main personality trait. Joy is the lead emotion in Riley's mind, what reflects on her upbeat and happy demeanor. Her mom's lead emotion is Sadness, representing her empathic and compassive nature. Meanwhile, her dad's lead emotion is Anger to represent his more strict and stubborn behavior. Also... while Riley's emotions are all over the place and fighting for control, her parents' emotions all work together, showing how adults are more in control of their feelings, while children feel them more deeply.
The scene where Bing bong jumps off always breaks my heart because he knows Riley’s to old for him there’s really no point for him to go on. She forgot him she outgrew him. He knows by the end Joy is more important than he is and he knows she needs her more then she needs him.
Okay to be clear, they aren't controller her, they're just performing the involuntary mental processes that influence any person. Recalling experiences based on feelings, or memories based on stimulae, that kind of thing. The kid is still making choices. They are based on those feelings and recollections, but they are her choices.
Simply the finest Pixar movie to date, in my not-so-humble opinion. Hilarious, heat-warming, heart-breaking, and truly insightful. And the death of Bing-Bong will never not get me. 😢
@@MatthewTeachout-xj4yy I sort of agree. I think both franchises have nearly endless *potential* for good movies, but you have to actually have a good idea for a movie to capitalize on it. Toy Story 1-3 had that. Solid, firm expansions on the concept. 4 had...some of it. I really don't think it was necessary. I would LOVE to see more inside out, but not at the expense of the quality of the movies. As long as they have something to say, and a passion to execute it, I'm excited for it.
A lot of child psychologists and people who work with neurodivergent kids use this movie to help their clients to recognise, express and manage emotions. A kid on the autism spectrum might not be able to verbalise ‘I feel angry’, but they can locate the picture of Anger as a way to demonstrate how they feel
Just to recap. This movie saved the day with a song powered rocket made out of a wagon and brooms, made us cry while a cotton candy elephant vanished, then solved the beginning of the climax using a million fake boyfriends, a trampoline, and a guy's head lit on fire. AND IT STILL WAS ONE OF THE MOST EMOTIONAL MOVIES OF ALL TIME!!!!
Well it mor like a representation of Riley’s thoughts, what Riley feels is what drives the emotions to act. If Riley feels Joy it drives Joy to push the buttons and take the rains
One of the best parts of this movie to me is that it shows how valuable each emotion is. They all have a need they they fill. Sure being happy all the time would be great but to much happens for that to be realistic. saw Movie 2 in the theatures... despite watching it broken and mixed and having missed the start I still found it as good as the first. Long story short I entered the wrong room 1st thought I just could not see my friend catching the tail end of the movie only to find the right room after and miss part of the beginning but catch more with my friend. I get why it did so well.
On a serious note, depression isn't sadness. Depression is nothingness, disinterest. Imagine joy and sadness being gone in your life and how empty that feels. Like, you know you love playing (insert game here), but when You've got time for it You're just bored. You don't want to play it bc it won't make you happy rn, and you're inexplicably sad.
If they do *Wreck-It-Ralph* you could basically call it Wreck-it Boom. 😢😂❤ EDITED: In that he is gonna sob hard at that one and be wrecked. ... ... like me.
When the sequel gets released on retail, they need to watch this again with the rest of the crew and then watch the new one with all of the gang! Edit: it comes out digital on August 20 Blu-ray and DVD September 10.
I'm sure you got it, but just in case: this movie is a great depiction of the difference between sadness and depression. There's a lot of focus on Sadness and its mix with other emotions, and its important functions, but depression isn't sadness. It's a void, a loss of self, a nothingness and an emptiness. Which is exactly what happens to Riley as her various islands of personality shut down and fall apart. No joy, no sadness, very little personality left.... just more and more emptiness. And sadness itself -- just being able to feel *something* again -- is what pulls her out of it.
I cannot get over how much I love this movie! By far my favorite Pixar film next to Toy Story 3, Brave, The Incredibles, Wreck It Ralph and Finding Nemo! Maybe even one of my favorite movies in general. Also regarding depression, I don't think it necessarily signifies sadness. I always found it's more complicated than that. Like sure you can feel sad when depressed but you can also just feel nothing like how Riley felt when she ran away. Like literally nothing. I've definitely had days like that.
I don’t know if this will be mentioned but the emotions have very specific outfits: Fear: has a red bow tie to show that we can act unkind to things we fear or don’t understand Anger: Red eyes to represent seeing red when we’re angry Joy: Blue hair to show that you need both her and Sadness Disgust: has a lovely purple ascot to show that disgust is meant to work with Fear in keeping us safe Sadness: has a white sweater, white is all the colors mixed together meaning sadness works with all the emotions sometimes.
Joy basically represents Toxic Positivity. That's why Sadness is so important, she's a balance to that toxic happiness. Life needs both emotions to cope with things. I love this movie so much.
When I watch this film, I was amazed because Pixar is never stop for making everyone cry and I realized every Emotion have important thing for everyone: - Joy seeks happiness and optimistic vision - Sadness seeks empathy and compassion - Anger seeks strong desire for justice - Fear seeks safety and survival instincts - Disgust seeks comfort and rational, sometimes cyanical thinking
I totally hope you end up reacting to "Riley's First Date" short because that one is hillarious! Also... "Inside Out 2" will completely break you. I dare to say it's even better than the first movie, something that tells everything about it. It's not for nothing that is becoming one of the most successful movies in theaters.
Being labeled the happy one can suck at times, because then you feel the need to be happy all the time and be the smile when everyone else is sad. I’m finally getting better and not forcing myself to be happy all the time it’s still tricky to be honest with my feelings but it’s nice that I’m not expected to be happy all the time. This movie has special place in my heart and mind as great representation as to why it’s not healthy to push down your sadness and negative emotion and put a smile for the sake of others, I could have used when I was Riley’s age but getting at 19 was still a great time to have it too.
One detail I love about this movie is how strong family island is compared to the others. The other islands crumble almost immediately once Riley starts acting contradictory, but it takes a lot to even shake the foundations of family island which I think speaks to how strong Riley's relationship with her parents are, which is also why it's the biggest island at the end
I love this movie. It talks about grieving and how important it is. Riley was forcing herself to be happy, even though she should be processing her emotions and alowing herself to be sad to then finlly be okay. She skipped that step and everything came creshing down. Inside out is easily one of my favorite movies of all time and it always makes me cry (also it talks about growing up and the loss of being a child and that hits close home, specially as someone that has moved out a lot in life)
I really loved this movie, and it'll always be my favorite Pixar film! I used to have plushies and books about them, and I just adore this movie. The music is just so nostalgic, and I couldn't deny the fact that it this film is dedicated to our children: please don't grow up, ever! But that didn't happen...
One of my favorite details in this movie is the portrayal of the emotions in Riley's clothes she wears throughout the movie. That every outfit she wears reflects the emotions in her head. Example that in the beginning when they first arrive at the new house, she's wearing a shirt that has all the emotions' colors: Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, and Purple. And then when she left the house to get pizza and to first day of school, she wore a bright yellow jacket covering her colorful t-shirt to symbolize Joy overshadowing most of the emotions, or how Riley masks her true emotions with Joy to make the people around her happy. But when Joy and Sadness disappear, she starts wearing grey and eventually black when she loses all the emotions within and can't feel anything. This movie has such an amazing story and is portrayed SO well. 💛💙♥️💚💜
Yeah depression isn't being sad. It's not feeling anything. And that anything actually includes sadness. As a trans girl who wasn't able to cry for years, it actually feels good.
31:50 Inside Outside is my favorite Pixar film and I can’t believe I never noticed that the memories light up one last time before they fade away… oh my god… and here I thought I couldn’t love this movie any more than I already do! That little detail is so heartbreaking 😢

As a psychology student, I appreciate this.
Also, anger lets you speak up and prevents people from walking all over you.
And they build upon that theme more with Anxiety in the sequel. I just wish the other new emotions got the same treatment.

Let me guess, Anger was the most used emotion for Zuko?
oh that's actually so cool, i never thought of the possibility of crossover fics with inside out! i've seen and read many that were golden compass/his dark materials crossovers where the characters had daemons, but never where they had personified emotions like inside out. i'll have to look up some of those!
‘without you, riley can’t be sad.’ yea. they got the point of the movie real quick huh?
Joy: _do you ever look at someone and wonder what's going on inside their head?_
All of us, in unison: *obviously*
From my experience with depression, I'd say it's best represented when the console grays out and the emotions can no longer interact with it and Sadness being the only one who even has a chance of breaking through that
Also I absolutely love the ending of this movie when we peek into the minds of all the different people, especially the "Girl! Girl! Girl!" alarm and the cat randomly freaking out because its Fear was walking on the console XD
3:02 Awww him saying they're fun uncles melted my heart❤
i think the ending for this movie is so heart warming
I'm ready to cry today with the boys. 💜
33:50 The best reaction EVER😭😭😭
Will and of course I've already seen it.😅
Sleep is a fascinating field of study.
My personal theory as to why joy didnt use the tube to send the core memory to HQ is because
She's either too focus on getting back in the headquarters she didnt realize she could just easily send it there, or
She's not going back without the core memory or her
She doesnt mind leaving sadness
Kind of? Even if core memories are back Riley still wouldn't be able to fully be happy, since she will lack her happy emotion.
Its crazy how you got the main focus of the movie at the stairs part. Especially pointing out the memory of her childhood friend and how its sad now
"I think you just solved depression"
yeahhhhh, about that.
Did she just turn on the baby? Is that how babies work I guess so has me dying with laughter. Love this reaction from you guys ❤
Dammit Pixar...always making me cry
Same... 😢
I wanted to forget about Inside Out when I grew up, but when I see it again... my childhood just came back. Before watching the sequel.
I can’t wait for you guys to react to “Inside Out 2”!
SAME
Nice to see someone realizing the importance of sadness.
It’s crazy that in retrospect, one of the most dramatic film moments in recent times was when Spider-Man got Bing-Bonged in Ironman’s arms
I wouldn’t say strict as much as being a father I feel like demands a certain level of hardness idk it’s a weird description
If you guys are going to continue down this Disney/Pixar road, the I highly recommend watching Cars and Wreck-It Ralph👍.
1:05 baby ACTIVATED
35:21 That's a thing. Sending them to the other parent for example, and she can walk cuz it's close
The scene where Bing bong jumps off always breaks my heart because he knows Riley’s to old for him there’s really no point for him to go on. She forgot him she outgrew him.
He knows by the end Joy is more important than he is and he knows she needs her more then she needs him.
They were so creative with this movie and it payed off so good
Okay to be clear, they aren't controller her, they're just performing the involuntary mental processes that influence any person. Recalling experiences based on feelings, or memories based on stimulae, that kind of thing. The kid is still making choices. They are based on those feelings and recollections, but they are her choices.
Not seeing Ruff in one of these is so weird
My personal favorite moments from this movie is the triple mint gum commercial and Disgust is my favorite emotion 💚
i like this boom haircut
The fact that you guys immediately understood why Sadness was trying to touch the memories was actually really impressive
Simply the finest Pixar movie to date, in my not-so-humble opinion. Hilarious, heat-warming, heart-breaking, and truly insightful.
And the death of Bing-Bong will never not get me. 😢
Honestly the sequel lived up to the hype
I’m convinced Inside Out can become Pixar’s next Toy Story franchise with like a bunch of sequels
Why would we want that? Toy Story is so watered down it’s sad now.
@@mentaya11 fair
@@MatthewTeachout-xj4yyI think they can make Inside out have 5-6 sequels and go through Riley's emotions as she grows older.
@@edk1124 I would trust Disney a decade ago but I just saw the Snow White Trailer and it isn’t promising
A lot of child psychologists and people who work with neurodivergent kids use this movie to help their clients to recognise, express and manage emotions. A kid on the autism spectrum might not be able to verbalise ‘I feel angry’, but they can locate the picture of Anger as a way to demonstrate how they feel
19:09
The best gag in all of Pixar
Just to recap. This movie saved the day with a song powered rocket made out of a wagon and brooms, made us cry while a cotton candy elephant vanished, then solved the beginning of the climax using a million fake boyfriends, a trampoline, and a guy's head lit on fire.
AND IT STILL WAS ONE OF THE MOST EMOTIONAL MOVIES OF ALL TIME!!!!
43:30 Noo! Please, I wished that you guys had known about the shorts.. = Riley's First Date?
That would have been a blast for you guys too! 😆
Well it mor like a representation of Riley’s thoughts, what Riley feels is what drives the emotions to act. If Riley feels Joy it drives Joy to push the buttons and take the rains
That will also be tackle on in the second part!
36:12 That’s what depression looks like and shutting down is like
One of the best parts of this movie to me is that it shows how valuable each emotion is.
14:01 "take that depression" hahahaha.....😂😂😂 That so funny😂😂
Bro is channeling, and an amazing quote
Hazbin hotel fans rise up
On a serious note, depression isn't sadness.
EDITED: In that he is gonna sob hard at that one and be wrecked. ... ... like me.
Never made it this early! No judgments on any tears shed, it just means sadness is doing her job! 😂
21:55
Dude i never realized that about the cards😐😂wow
Don’t think I didn’t notice the Gummigoo plushie.
Real
When the sequel gets released on retail, they need to watch this again with the rest of the crew and then watch the new one with all of the gang!
Edit: it comes out digital on August 20
Blu-ray and DVD September 10.
I don’t know if this will be mentioned but the emotions have very specific outfits:
Fear: has a red bow tie to show that we can act unkind to things we fear or don’t understand
Anger: Red eyes to represent seeing red when we’re angry
Joy: Blue hair to show that you need both her and Sadness
Disgust: has a lovely purple ascot to show that disgust is meant to work with Fear in keeping us safe
Sadness: has a white sweater, white is all the colors mixed together meaning sadness works with all the emotions sometimes.
This is one of the best movie that pixar have made 😊
Joy basically represents Toxic Positivity. That's why Sadness is so important, she's a balance to that toxic happiness. Life needs both emotions to cope with things. I love this movie so much.
Get in boys we're getting discount therapy 😎
So glad the couple this film, they'll need for their future children
The Mom is sadness because it represents empathy and Dad is anger because it represents protectives
Mom having sadness as the main one could be her being an empath and the Dad having anger as the main one could be him being protective
Finally i was actually waiting for this to come out
This helped me make sense of how self-sabotaging behaviors can make sense in the moment.
A pair of relatively obscure but classic animated films you could watch are Tin Tin and Rango.
When I watch this film, I was amazed because Pixar is never stop for making everyone cry and I realized every Emotion have important thing for everyone:
- Joy seeks happiness and optimistic vision
- Sadness seeks empathy and compassion
- Anger seeks strong desire for justice
- Fear seeks safety and survival instincts
- Disgust seeks comfort and rational, sometimes cyanical thinking
Inside out is easily one of my favorite movies of all time and it always makes me cry (also it talks about growing up and the loss of being a child and that hits close home, specially as someone that has moved out a lot in life)
0:33 inside out 2 is amazing, I watched it in theaters. It’s just as good as the first one.
“Take her to the moon for me” 😭😭😭
Such a deep movie
I really loved this movie, and it'll always be my favorite Pixar film!
I used to have plushies and books about them, and I just adore this movie.
The music is just so nostalgic, and I couldn't deny the fact that it this film is dedicated to our children: please don't grow up, ever!
But that didn't happen...
One of my favourite Pixar movies ever and the sequel to me is somehow even better. Such a beautiful coming of age movie. 💛💙💜💚❤️
Depression isnt always about being sad, is more like feeling nothing at all.
lol if you listen closely, you can hear the Haunted Mansion theme playing, during her brief nightmare 😎
Yeah depression isn't being sad. It's not feeling anything. And that anything actually includes sadness. As a trans girl who wasn't able to cry for years, it actually feels good.
Ngl id love to see them watch your lie in april u know lol
31:50 Inside Outside is my favorite Pixar film and I can’t believe I never noticed that the memories light up one last time before they fade away… oh my god… and here I thought I couldn’t love this movie any more than I already do! That little detail is so heartbreaking 😢
35:26 having been a bit of a chronic runaway myself in my teens, you'd be surprised how few people notice things like "this kid is riding the bus alone"
i do LOVE that they emphasize that you do need all your emotions. granted for me, joy is the one who has taken a step back from being in control, and i have few rare moments where i'm happy. but other than that i love this movie and the second one.
"I'm not in the mood of be depressed"
well guess what this movie talks about?
