Despite coming into the Championship without a professional win to his name, Evans stood on the brink of a sensational underdog triumph with two holes to play. Eight birdies in the space of 10 holes had lifted him to the top of the leaderboard and he was still two clear when he reached the penultimate tee, albeit with his main rivals still in the early stages of their rounds.
What followed was one of the most dramatic passages of play in The Open’s illustrious history.

How can I not remember this? I remember all of the other crazy British Opens.
I ever heard of Gary Evan’s !
Same here.... never found it, poor lad
Mandella Effect
Me too
I think it should be noted
1) Him making 4 even if he did find it would have been very tough
2) Bogeying 18 is what cost him the playoff
Absolutely 100%. HIGHLY unlikely he hits his 3rd out of that shit and ends up w/ a par. Obviously the headline is clickbait... if you watch this entire thing, it's clear this hole - and lost ball - did NOT cost him the tournament since he made par.
Would it have that much to include a date in either the title or the description?
I believe it was 2002 at Muirfield
Thank you for bringing this back, I think it's largely been forgotten.
An absolutely incredible situation - and such a reminder of how bonkers golf is.
So nice to see Scott Verplank's lovely supportive reaction. (Gary, understandably after that, messed up the 18th, just managing a bogey, and missed a playoff by a shot)
The Marshall's should have never let the spectators in there. That should have been blocked off area as soon as the ball flew into that area. Wow
Had never seen this before, that putt was wild, did not see that coming at all
The 2002 Open Championship was played at Muirfield Golf Links in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. Ernie Els won his first Claret Jug and third major title in a playoff over Stuart Appleby, Steve Elkington, and ultimately in a sudden-death playoff over Thomas Levet. Gary Evans missed the playoff by one stroke.
in 2003, Tiger, with 5 thousand people watching his tee shot, at the first hole of the tournament, lost the ball in his opening round. Went on to score 7, and lost a place in the play off with ben Curtis by 2
unbelievable....noone but player and caddy and possibly a marshall SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR THE BALL...
11:30 wait a second.... he hit that putt!! 😮😮
All these people trampling down the grass and possibly burying the ball. That’s kind of sad.
Lovely to hear the voice of Alex Hay.
The crowd had one job...
The player was on the fairway....he hit it there 😭
No spectators should have been allowed anywhere near it. I'd bet that one of them trod on it or buried it under trampled grass. Lots of them were not even looking for the ball.
Very unlikely indeed. You have a cynical strange mindset.
Much much easier not to hit it there.
@@sirskullington9213 , please tell us all about your experiences in the final holes of major championships. If not, maybe your experiences on the final day of regular professional tournaments? If not, maybe your experiences on the final day of major Amateur championships, or collegiate championships, or even HS championships?
And you all have such a rose tinted view of the world that something like that is unfathomable?
Glad he didn't find it as all he seemed to do was blame people. You hit the shot mate.
You can watch the full official film from 2002 at R&A TV
What year and what course? This information should really be in the drop down description.
2002 muirfield
true I though a quick google search showed me right at the top

Just take the penalty...
Hell no, that's a $5 golf ball.
Legend has it his ball went into another dimension 😆 🤣
Never quit on a round.
The ball wasn’t lost, it’s on my bedside table
Lost ball is the most brutal of all penalties in golf.
When I was a in a national tournament qualifier as a teenager I was leading after 18 of 36 holes. First hole I hit a hard straight pushed drive maybe 5 yards right of the fairway, never found it, walked back and made triple and didn't qualify.
Didn't really matter, as he was never making birdie even if they found it. He choked way more on the 18th. I mean, of course his second shot on 17 was a choke, but once he made the putt he was saved like Constantino Rocca, but alas, the golfing Gods said...enough.
Should have sent Gary Player in. He'd have found it 👀
Rabbit always had a hole in his pocket to drop a similar ball for Gary
Sadly playing HS and college, I've witnessed so many times players are tempted to cheat in this situation (the Goldfinger move).
Cheats never prosper 😁
Not that it would have mattered, but was the ball ever found?
"Legend has it that..." (etc)
What a putt 👏
I found it
Odds are even if the ball was found, par was still likely the best result on that hole.
If he didn’t bogey 18 he still makes the playoff
A stark reminder to us all not to hit your ball in the shite.
With all of those feet looking for a ball, what would have been the ruling if someone kicked the ball out of a worse spot? With all of those feet nobody would have ever been able to recreate the same condition?
Gary Player didn’t let it stop him
Saw player cheat at Valencia, picked up his ball in the fairway but quickly put it down, the day before it was lift clean and place but not that day, no penalty, just a senior moment!
If you think about it. Even if he played that Titleist ball imagine putting that tee down, getting up and down, I seriously dont think any PGA golfer would have the pysche to pick it out of the cup let alone putt over it knowing damn well it aint their ball. Definately a great game of integrity but hardluck.
Even if he found his own ball, par at best. As to cheating, that’s pretty risky as it could cost you money and reputation. Even if a player actually was wicked enough to do that, if he didn’t get caught, karma would catch him.
@tat3998 i agree mate, id think about it every time i pick up a club. And could very well be the reason I never pick one up again. But im smart i just dont fckn cheat
That didn't stop VJ
I remember this well. I was gutted for him. A birdie would've got him into the play off
He got lucky not finding his ball. Very doubtful he hits his 3rd out of that shite and makes par. Apparently he bogeyed the next hole - which contrary to this videos headline - is what cost him The Open, not this lost ball
That's why you're not supposed to hit it anywhere near that gnarly fescue. In a major you have to keep it in the fairway, or you are punished. This isn't bad luck as this whole post infers, it's golf.
Another thing is, people who win these things keep their composure. He didn't, he was a wreck ( by his own admission) on the 18th and bogeyed to miss the playoff.
This posting suggests that he lost the Open championship because he had the bad luck to lose a ball. Ridiculous, you can't assume that.
INCREDIBLE.. That THE OPEN could allow this chaos... I blame lack of crowd control... isn't there a marshal that saw the ball go into the rough...and the replay should have given a close proximity to where the ball landed...and one marshal, the golfer and caddie certainly could have found the ball in 5 minutes...👎
This is why golf is greatest game in world, when he put the tee down in most sports they would have said yes that's its, but not in golf
How many sports use Tees ? Not sure what that means 😂
@terryduckworth5105 the real Football uses the Tee when kicking the ball off.
@@jaknap1 what football is that ?
@@terryduckworth5105 there is only one real football, the American football. Where players don’t act like child.
@@jaknap1 I’m not familiar with football… is the American one wear they wear them big shoulder pads and helmets so they don’t hurt themselves ?
The people were trying to help
It did look a bit "jumbily" out there.
That putt was Nickalesk...
He was better off re hitting from the fairway than trying to hit a shot out of that long grass even if they had found it.
It likely didn’t cost him a stroke unless he somehow got up and down from the thick rough. Didn’t cost him the open.
It was a horrendous second shot in fairness
Well.. i bet you can do worse even without all the pressure from crowd and money prize
Ca fait plaisir qu’au niveau professionnel il y ait des difficultés pour retrouver les balles, pas que pour nous pauvres amateurs 😂
The headline would make you think he LOST the open...lost "a ball to lose The Open" except, that's not what happened. In fact, had he FOUND that ball in that area - long grass and/or trampled & covered - he would have done WORSE on this hole. He hit a great 4th shot (counting penalty) then sunk a ridiculous putt. I doubt he does better than that trying to hit #3 out of that long fescue which tends to rap around the hosel and the ball can end up anywhere - or go nowhere.
I don't know if he ended up losing or not, but this hole i.e. a super rare "lost ball" would not have been the reason.
Also, why they let a throng of about 50 people walk all over the area where the ball landed is paralyzingly dumb. Someone HAD to have watched it go into the fescue - within a foot or two. They should then direct a tournament official over to that spot alone. For all we know, someone picked it up or it was hopelessly trampled and covered up.
Welcome to our Saturday medal world Gary. Minus the load of people looking for our ball. He didn’t lose it for losing a ball. From where his ball was a 5 was also the likely outcome.
He should of hit an iron lay up. What was he thinking?
If his 4th shot would have been his second, that putt going in would have given him an eagle, and he could have won even with a bogey at 18.
Remarkable turn of events ... he might have actually been lucky by NOT finding his original ball in the overgrown rough.
poor bastard
He should have claimed the first ball that they found and shout "found it"
Thanks for that..
At least we all know who the cheat is now😔😔
So the cameraman missed it completely? You think they would look at the footage. They were all over his next shot though😅
Always a risk I guess when you play with a fade (coming over the top with a closed face and pulling it, i guess the tension of the situation exacerbated). I feel for him though, of course. Amazing put to par, though.
It’s a tough thing to accept, a lost ball…not for me it isn’t, it’s almost second nature
Me too, lost 6 in the weekly comp on Sunday, strokeplay not stableford so couldn’t just say sod it and move onto next hole
Still got a five.
Doubt he would’ve birdied from that thick rough.
A spare ball in a leaky pants pocket??
If he was "Jordan Spieth" and not "Gary Evans" they would have magically found the ball in a perfect lie and he would have gotten it up and down for birdie
Daym. Sucks.
Seemed like a jerk.
Why is he upset? He lost one and found several. Maybe one of them was even a Pro V 1
they were Top Flight and Pinnacle rocks.
Surprising he got that far with such an awful takeaway. Takes an enormous amt of timing to hit it straight regularly.
Why abbreviate 'amount' to 'amt'?
That little kid has it 3:24
Even if they had of found it I doubt he would have been able to hit it tbh....that rough is BRUTAL!
I noticed he found 'a' ball.
That rough was absolute murder! He would’ve been able to take unplayable and drop it somewhere near that spot, leaving him a much shorter shot in for 4 and a better chance of hitting it close for a par putt. Still can’t believe he made par there with that monster putt. Wow.
Every golfer has been there. But only one while leading a major championship
The only person he has to blame is himself
Awww gee ,I can’t find me ball , do what we do drop one out of your pocket when no one’s looking 😀🤑🤑🤑🙋🏼
That's what Patrick Reed does...then improves his lie
Almost 100% a spectator pocketed the ball, absolutely ridiculous how they allowed that.
What on earth is this title? He never would have made better than a 5 if he’d found it so would have ended up at 5 under regardless. 4 people finished a shot better at 6 under…
Worst feeling
Absolutely disgrace in my opinion. Someone must have seen thaf. Stupid amount of people that should have been cleared.
True as f how can you get that many people in a small area and nobody see where it went in. People are dumb.
@thomas1630 people are dumb? You think they didn't try to find it? If its in a hole or someone steps on it its gone. You look quite dumb writing your comment
I was working at the 1987 Open at Muirfield when big Sam hit it into the catering area on 17 it landed in a box unit. The Caddy came rushing in saying don’t touch it? He got a lovely drop way outside of the area 👍
Yes one of the advantages pros have. I’ve often thought the drop zone should be a rough patch of grass to reflect the poor shot they had previously made
Pretty sad to lose like that. To add insult to injury, he never ended up playing in the Masters, but would have gotten an invitation if he finished in the top 4, I think. He ended up T-5.
how did he lose because of this? He still had the lead after this hole lol
But his lead was cut by two strokes because of this. The others caught up.
As an amateur, if you were playing there on the average Sunday…as soon as you hit it to that area, you would accept that it was a lost ball before you even walked up there. It is an irony of golf that the best players get to hit into that crap and still have a chance to find it with all that help. We lesser mortals, who struggle to hit it straight, don’t have the benefit of all that help to find it. So, we have even more stress put on us not to hit it there!
Yeah losing balls used to annoy me to hell. Yet the pros just go hit it out if the trees/rough. Well i guess it doesn’t always happen
You probably should turn pro then.
@@chaddddd1251 obviously not getting the spirit of the comment.
Every Pro was once an amateur!
@@vishnuvittel2602 I am just pointing out the irony that a pro can get aggressive and risk hitting it where we would lose it and never find it because usually someone in the gallery will find out. So, we have extra stress on our game when we are not as accurate to begin with. Not a complaint, just kinda funny.
