In this episode of Fear the Old Lore, we'll take a look at Fia and the Deathbed Companions comparing the English and Japanese text for a better understanding of the lore.
When I first met Fia, and she offered to hold the Tarnished, I kind of just figured she was going to be similar to Arianna from Bloodborne and that she was going to have a passive role throughout the game. However, as they say, never judge a book by its cover, and looks can be deceiving. Fia plays a much more active part in her quest, even going so far as to killing the older D brother, Darian, to accomplish her mission.
While Deathbed Companions are kind of portrayed like ladies of the night, there's actually a surprising amount of depth to their lore, and the more I learned about them, the more I began to appreciate their role in the game, though I must admit, I was not a fan initially.
While we still don't know how exactly the Age of the Duskborn ending differs from the other endings in Elden Ring, hopefully this video will shed some more light on Fia and the Deathbed Companions. And if your take on Fia or the Deathbed Companions differs from mine, let me know in the comments below.

I think Fromsoftware has always been really good about having badass women characters. Sure, there are some that fill a more stereotypical sexualized role, but Lady Maria, Malenia, Lucatiel, Millicent, and even Arianna, who is a literal "women of the night", are multi-dimensional characters who often play critical roles in the stories. They don't really do they "meek and helpless women with big boobs very often (Gwynevere excluded, lol).

And ironically Gwynevere isn't even real

Fia's Age of the Duskborn is something in her eyes she sees as a kindness and I believe it is likely supposed to be more uplifting than the Dung Eater's idea of equality through universal agony. It's hard to say what people who aren't Golden Order adherents would think of it, as it's not laid out whether Those Who Become in Death will simply be more permanent or they will gain additional will and consciousness.
My guess without any proof is that all those who die in the new age will become part of Those Who Live in Death, but once again, what that would entail exactly is unknown.

What a weird opening take, as if Fromsoftware has the archetype all over their games. Prostitution has been around forever, whether paid or for pleasure by the fairer sex. Still the case today, so a relevant role and character while being an original character.

I think another connection regarding the role of the will to live is the description of the largest runes, champions etc, talking about how in the past champions would simply die after their duty was fulfilled. Satisfied. Also connects with Godfrey becoming tarnished maybe.
Excellent video, the first really good and meaningful analysis of this story from elden ring (well I've fallen out of a lot of lore discussions but of what I saw over the first year). Makes things make sense.
Details are fuzzy but I think fia's is one of the overall good endings along with Goldmask and ranni. From presentation/themes/characters.

I wonder what affec the other endings have on Godwyn and deathblight.
I imagine it gets integrated into the Elden ring since that mending comes directly from Godwyn.
But what of say Gold masks ending that perfects the golden order? Does it purge Godwyn and those who live in death?
Does death blight go unchecked in Ranni's ending or do they just die since the Elden Ring is no longer asserting it's power?

What really is the difference between those who live without death and the normal wandering zombies?

    • @Photoloss
      @Photoloss 9 месяцев назад +4

To my understanding they're basically twisted mirror versions of one another: Those Who Live In Death have a will but no life, and the wanderers have eternal life but no proper will to speak of.

Literally couldn't name one single "subservient woman being little more than a harlot in a FromSoft game" if you put a gun to my head. It sounds like you have strange ideas about women in general. I'd be curious what examples of this trope you might give.

    • @LastProtagonist

Yuria (DeS,) Arianna, and Karla all get the meek sexual object treatment.

@@LastProtagonist I disagree and think you could benefit from reevaluating your thoughts about how these women are portrayed. These three characters have shame related in part to aspects of their womanhood (or society's response to their womanhood) but all three stand by their choices and express defiance and revulsion when faced with a loss of autonomy.
      - Yuria: witch who was nearly tortured to death and experienced a loss of faith but still practices her craft in the face of persecution and offers gratitude to the person who saved her.
      - Arianna: literally a prostitute, yes, but not meek and works as a warped madonna figure in a horror game about maternity and religion.
      - Karla: definitely promiscuous, teases/flirts with the player, as well as owning the consequences of her dark magic like Yuria, but meek? Harlot? Sexual object? Not in my view.

@@abysswalker9867 I obviously think there's more to these characters than the way they've been objectified, however, there is a throughline in FromSoft games where women who are overly sexualized are expected to be subservient and meek. It's part of what makes them complex characters by overcoming their stereotypical roles, Fia included.
Beyond that, all of these characters' story resolutions are contingent upon the actions of the protagonist, and Fia initially seemed the same as the rest until she subverted expectations by murdering Darian.
It's fine if you disagree, but I think you're too hung up on something I'm not even really trying to focus on

    • @abysswalker9867

@@LastProtagonist I hear what you're saying but I wouldn't call it a hang up if the foundation of your interpretation here relies on a misogynistic misreading of the text. There's simply nothing in any of these games to indicate that these women have been objectified/sexualized in the way you describe so the only conclusion is that you're projecting a lot of bias onto them. To me this is an important distinction worth discussing because gender roles in these games are extremely complicated and nuanced and are often pivotal factors in the story and you have a platform about the story details with a pretty decent following.
It's also not stereotyping if only 1 in about 30 female characters (Fia in Elden Ring) all in the same game that's largely about women struggling for autonomy plays a role similar to a prostitute, especially when she bucks the stereotypical writing of a prostitute character at every turn. I guess you could notice a pattern of "dark witch character gets persecuted" but even that isn't consistent. There are bigger fish to fry here, agreed, so I won't carry on but this was worth mentioning.
