Got the 30i z4 from this era myself. I have been trying to ‘sell’ it for a couple of years. Truth is it’s impossible to let go cause it’s as close to perfection as it gets. It’s turned bad days at work into a good day by the time I get home in just a short drive! Truly underrated vehicle but it’s good cause you don’t see many on the roads. Such an accurate and honest review! You got a subscriber from me.
Hey Joe, thanks for the comment! Do you have a manual? I think that makes it an even more fun potentially. Glad to see someone else have as great of an experience as I have. Cheers!
@@market_car I do have the 23i version manual. It's indeed really good except for the 1 to 2 shifts which can be tricky to do correctly. It's one of these cars which have a 1 to 2 that can really be messy if not done reaaally perfectly or slowly. I would not regret having the automatic for a 35i tho, I can barely use all the 6 gears in road conditions (so, without going at speeds that would endanger others), so with a more powerful thing than the 23 (maybe 30 would still be good it's not that much more powerful), you probably can't get as much fun with the transmission. I'm pretty sure I'd feel frustrated if I had to stop at third or fourth gear

I just purchased a 2010 Z4 35i (74K miles) and I am over the moon. Thanks for your video; it was one of the reasons I felt strongly about the BMW compared to the Mercedes SL500.

Oh wow I didn't know they changed that for the LCI but I looked it up and it's true, honestly it's probably not that bad because you could use the actual shifter to go up/down with one hand but I agree with you I still prefer this
@@market_car yes you can use the shifter, but i was thinking about times when your hand isnt free. For example you have a coffee cup in your hand. That happens. Especially in e89 as its cupholders under the armrest arent ideal. But yea z4 35i is awesome. Owned one for 6 years now. The longest time i have ever kept any car around.
No its not. It's stupid. Bmw is in Europe where people watch ACTUAL skilled driving like formula 1 and not nascar. They go on the tracks not drag strips or just drive on the road and go 5 over the limit and think they're "skilled" drivers by just going in a straight line. When you're on the track, the left for down and right paddle for up is the best way and it trickled down from fornula 1. I remember driving a bmw with same paddle shifting both down and up, so stupid and pointless. Might as well just have a single paddle not two
First off, excellent video! Subscribed! I own a 2014 Valencia Orange 28i with the Hyper Orange interior. I bought it for my wife in 2017 with 11K miles and in perfect condition. It is really a striking roadster, she loves it. Plenty of power for us and I think its styling will hold up better over the years than the G29, a great car in its own right. We especially love the E89's retractable hardtop. We feel it adds a level of sophistication that the G29, as nice as it is, just doesn't have. We've test-driven a G29 Z4 and although the higher level of build quality is very evident in everything you see, touch, and hear, we prefer the proportions of the E89 Z4 and feel that having that classic British roadster design, it will age very gracefully. We intend to have it for many years to come. Edit: I will say this, having driven both the 35i and 35is and the 28i, the greater power of the larger engine is intoxicating. I could get used to that for sure! However, the turbo four best suits our needs, and since my wife is the primary driver, she really has all the power she needs, too much really she says, LOL. One benefit to the 28i is slightly better weight distribution. Not a big deal but I notice slightly livelier handling, probably due to less weight up front and damn near 50/50 distribution. Also, maintenance, which I do on all of my vehicles, is so much easier. Being that it was designed to hold the six-cylinder engine, there is excess room in the engine bay when only stuffed with the four. Finally, it does have better fuel economy but since this is our weekend car, really that was not much of a selling point for us but it does go farther on a tank of gas if that is something you value. We take our Z on long road trips. Due to the folding hard top, the trunk must be utilized as efficiently as possible. To do this we purchased customized luggage that takes up all of the available space with the top stored.
I got a 2009 Z4 sdrive35i as well. It is definitely a massively under-appreciated vehicle. Puts a big smile on my face everytime I drive it. Great review, earned my subscribe! Keep it up, look forward to more content.
Likewise Jerry, I’m loving my 2009 35i. Great fun and puts a smile each time I take it out. Replaced water pump and thermostat at 60k miles last year. Waiting for the turbos to go next… what the hell… I might upgrade if they fail!,,
I have the new z4 m40i. Tuned to 440-450wheel and 500wtq. Corners better than my m2 comp and f80 m4 used to and sets better lap times and stays FAR MORE PLANTED and looks WAY WAY better than those, and is on par with a g80 m4 in terms of handling and cornering, but beats it in looks and how fast it feels due to it being lower, less weight, shorter height, length, and wheelbase but being as wide as a new m4 or even a new 5 series
I recently purchased a 2010 with 54,000 on the clock and I absolutely love this car its so fun to drive. Mine is the same color and every time I drive it I'm amazed at it's capabilities and its technology for a 12 year old car. BMW is truly the ultimate driving machine.
I have a 2011 BMW Z4 sdrive 30i that I have for almost a year now and I absolutely love it! it's a beautiful car, drives beautifully, and it's just amazing.
I have a 2015 e89 s28i. It's not like the s35i which is more powerful but the s28i can do 0-60 in 5.7 ish sec. It's already plenty fast. Amongst Z4 owners the s20i is sought after as it has the best engine sound of the 4 cylinders. It also is the lightest and best handling. And therefore the sweetest top down leisure cruiser that can togue. The s28i is turboed significantly so is more muted. It is the choice for carving mountain roads quickly. The s30i and above is noticeably heavier and worse at cornering tight mountain roads (togue). But it's power and grip makes up for all that. Each has its place. If you wanna just flex get the lowest variant you can, it sounds good. If you want a togue/mountain road machine get the s28i it's still light-ish but nearly 260hp. If you want a fast GT car get the s30i and above but understand it's going to be heavier up front. Maintenance is very reasonable! Definitely cheaper than Porsche or Mercedes but reliability is just above average ( for a continental car) Finally let's get to the crux, why this over a Cayman/ Boxster? I can tell you this is MORE comfortable than both. It's still sporty enough way more than any passenger car, but the Cayman/ Boxster handling is one level higher. Therefore this car is great to 1. Flex 2. Top down 3. Long distance comfort drive with some mountain carving/ togue jaunts. 4. Daily-able thanks to reasonable maintenance and comfort. 5. Save fuel with the 2 litre 4 cyl. Cheers.
Great video man. There’s not a lot of good reviews on this car. This car is my dream car and I’m looking forward to buy it soon! Keep up the brilliant videos
Get some warranty on it when you buy. I got 16 35Is. And my warranty covered about 10k in repairs during my 1 yr and 4 month ownership. Now seems like ABS module is failing, need another visit to the dealer. It is like you encounter problem in every 3 month.. gotta have warranty..
I own a sdrive35is... I've owned and driven many cars, but this is by far my favorite car I've ever owned. Even if I get a porsche or the new g29, I don't think I'll let my e89 go - too beautiful!
I Drive a BMW Z4 M Coupe, and I absolutely love it! I like the fact that chances are I'm the only one on the road with one ,They're very rare and fast !
Proud owner of a 2014 28i since 2017. Melbourne red, M sport, 19" wheels and it's a manual. Although the G29 is getting more common, I still see some heads turning while driving. I think it'll become a classic over time. edit: typo
I took the same year/model/color model today for a test drive, and got back home to sleep overnight on to buy it or not. In meantime, I stumbled on this video, and decision is made :) Hvala brate!
@@market_car OK, so obviously :), I bought the car the next day and must say I LOVE it...the car is beautiful and is such great fun to drive. I am driving it every day, and even my wife steals it for a ride when not driving any kids. It has some nice options from previous owner like redesign model visual upgrade, engine stage II tuning (400HP), beautiful 19" vossen wheels with pilot 4s tires and a super cool Akrapovic active exhaust which makes this car a truly allrounder. On the flip of the switch you can get really sporty explosive sound from exhaust, or on another press of the button (almost) quiet smooth civil ride. So if you like you can have nice smooth ride experience, or you can have truly explosive sportscar experience. It also has universal remote on mirror so I can open my garage doors without reaching in my pocket for remote which is really awesome. I would like to thank you for making this video...it really made impact on my decission.
Im paralyzed and I love the paddle feature on mine as I can take it to the canyons and use my one hand for gas and brake while the other controls turning, up and down shifts. My older car (Camaro) I just had to use automatic shifts and that’s boring. So far this is my all time favorite car.
I have one of the last of this gen with the 1m engine and LCI LED’s it is a fabulous cruiser. The 310 litre boot space is way more useful than I ever thought it would be. The dual clutch box is wonderful, much nicer than the G series.
The most fun you can buy for $8.000 is the E85 Z4 with 3.0 litre straight 6 and manual gearbox. Its 300 kilos lighter to make up for the missing turbo and thx to the cloth roof, the boot is actually usable. You just need to dump the run-flat tyres and use rugular ones. Its also decently reliable, except for casual oil leekages of all sorts. I have one and will not let it go anytime soon.
Interested where folks are finding these prices... in The Netherlands you're not finding an e89 for less than around 17k Eur (prices have stayed flat or even a bit higher in the last 3 years)
Great review! Timeless beauty! I really wanted one of these but couldn’t find a good example - had to go for the G29 M40i which isn’t such a beautiful car, but these features and performance is phenomenal!
Thanks for the compliments Johannes very nice of you to say, and I couldn't agree more, beautiful car. The g29 must be so fun to drive around, looking at it online it is a gorgeous car, probably a dream car for some
@@KimiRai-lf3gn red leather ❤ mine is just black with black leather but just changed stock 17 wheels to 18 bmw styling 294 and car looks much much better 🙂 greetings from Poland
@@meredipffek the 294 are my favourite wheels :D sadly I have the same rims as in the video (but I don't have M package), they are beautiful but not as beautiful as yours ;) did you buy those second hand? (new it's more than 500 € each :p )
@@KimiRai-lf3gn yeah, 294 are my fav stock rimms for e89. Mine are second hand with full renovation = 4000 pln (something about 850 euro). I've also saw some second hand 294 wheels in a quite good shape (without renovation) around 3000 pln 🙂
Looking at this as my next car ( I own an Ls400 and want a quick turbo coupe that feels as close to single seater.. close to the road as possible). I love the looks.. love the engine base.. I think this is a solid goal to work towards before a Lexus RC-F or E92 M3. I just love the styling, not too much new bs inside the car with screens.. true enthusiast car
Your review was really really good mate you earned a subscriber. I was previously deciding to get BMW E63 650i because it's a V8 in the cheapest form and the greatest 6 series for the used car industry. Its absolutely a bargain. Like 350 bhp 500 nm the exhaust note is amazing the design language is timeless but the thing is it doesn't come with paddle shifters as standard and not having a paddle shifters is really a downside for me personally. So I also had Z4 in my list which is a little off my budget as The 650i you can get it in around 25-26 grand USD here in India. You can also get a Z4 around that range but a good one will cost around 30 grand but now I think I'll get the Z4 because of your review. It's an amazing car it's a V6 right ? If I'm worng please correct me. So it's a V6 300 bhp (I don't remember the torque) it's twin turbo the car looks amazing like you can look at this car and say is it really 10 15 years old ? Damn that car is sexy with that little bit of old school retro look. Bmw's design language is absolutely top of the it's timeless. I mean just look at a E46 you can look at that car and wonder how this car is more than 2 decades old ? I only wanted to have a BMW because in my personal opinion they are way better and ahead than their close rivals like Audi and Mercedes. I'm now leaning more towards Z4 and I think I'll get that. Thanks for the amazing review. Keep grinding
Straight 6... which is a classic BMW engine type. If you go old school: straight 6 for BMW and some British classics as E-type and TR6, V8 for american cars, L4 for Alfa Romeo and Fiats, flat 6 for Porsche, flat 4 for Subaru WRX, v12 for Ferrari...
@@market_car Absolutely love my Z4. The Msport has more aggressive front bumpers and rear diffuser. Msport steering wheel, gear stick and badging. Hope you’re loving your Z4
Have a Sdrive 23i manual for sale..reluctantly here in Bristol UK. 2009, 82650 miles, metallic grey/red leather interior. Exceptional condition for year. Drives perfect! £7995.
@@market_car absolutely! i didnt get the car just to get beaten by mclarens lol ill work my way to reach 600 hp hopefully , but for now im working on getting apex rims under the name of (arc-8) forged it will look real nice
@@market_car Got a e89 Z4 35i with a single turbo conversion pushing over 700hp reliably with stock internals. I've gone 800+ with 35 PSI with the 6466 precision turbo, but I don't want to mess with the reliability, so I keep it at 30 PSI max. I'm running the Docrace single turbo kit. Amazing car. Wouldn't trade it for anything! Love the N54 platform.
I have the same car in white and just brings a big smile on my face everytime i see it and drive it. Top down top up equally fun and the best part is the hardtop. Truely a masterpiece 😍. Loved the review and Subscribed💥 Just one question does the check engine light ever go off 🤣🤣 i seem to have it come and go back abd forth always wiring issue or rat bites
Thanks for the compliments. This particular check engine light was due to bad fuel mixture (think o2 sensor), I just cleared it with a cheap bluetooth obd2 sensor and a random diagnostic app
What is your cost of ownership thus far. Not looking for details, just your overall thoughts. Never owned a Z4 let a lone a BMW before. Am really interested in getting one.
I don’t pay the costs of ownership as it’s my dad’s car but because ours has been so well taken care of when we bought it other than regular oil changes there haven’t been much costs. Only thing I can think of is the tires which can get a bit expensive if you want the good ones. Hope you get one!
i live in london can’t afford the automatic might just settle for a manual and use only on the weekends 23i probably then just get a tune 250 brake should be enough for london fun
My have almpust 200k km. and it's 2009, and car had 9 owners, Coral Red interior and it's looks like brand new. it's not common to see them with high millage, But they are pretty reliable and can easily ran 200k. mi.+(320 000km) They are well made, despite the maintenance issue on the N54 engine. like turbo's, water pump, oil leaks and more... What I'm saying, that any material need care, especially one with convertible top, unfortunately your car was neglected and didn't have good care, but still most of the interior pieces need little bit of love! and it will shine again! And that you can find on my channel, currently restouring my on budget, and it's going well!
Agree completely. I think these were the Tigar Ultra High Performance. It's a Serbian brand that has some really interesting tires. Was really surprised by their winter offerings. Cheers!
I have a e85 6cyl NA 2007, and im looking to sell it to buy one of these beauty's, the power, the looks, just amazes me, My e85 is beautiful all black, with black rims, it is a piece of art aswell but only 177hp puts me down :(
I’m like 1.9m, to be honest it does get a bit claustrophobic in there due to the car not having back seats, so nowhere to move the seat back, but I still think you’d fit. Best would be to go out and try sitting in one

Yep great design, really like it, but in right combo..maybe e85 edges it, apparently better drivers care, more authentic design, and not an updated design as here, although brilliantly executed. Its just slightly fussy but stylish....too stylish 😎?
Hello good video. I wanted to buy on of these I have the e85 3.0si manual but fully prepare for circuit. Kw suspension, 6 piston breaks, silent block powerflex , h&r rolling bar, supersprint exhaust and oz ultraleggerra. When I take it I have a big smile but I want more power like a z4 35i stage 2 mhd, I don’t want to regret my e85 she is unique. I hope you can help me in my choice.
I think your e85 is too unique to get rid of but you definitely won’t regret getting an e89 especially with the mhd tune. I think you will have a lot of fun with whatever you decide though! Thanks for the comment
Gorgeous presenter...;) And like me, he is very positive about the e89 Z4. I own a 2016 sapphire-black metallic M-Sport one with red leather interior and all of the options. And it is really magnificent. I still look over my shoulder every time I walk away from the car, because it is simply soo beautiful and sexy.
I'm moving to the States soon and I've been saving up for the last 10 years so I could get the z4 after setting down in the US. Since in my country a new Z4 including taxes costs around $180k USD since we pay 300% in taxes for cars. Could you tell me how much a used Z4 will cost near Atlanta since I'm moving there by the end of the year. Loved the video man and subscribed!
Not at all, the stereo is plenty loud and the bass is satisfactory. There are speakers all around the cabin like on the top and bottom of the doors and arround the headrest which give it a really nice sound!

@@market_car Well, you've got plenty of work ahead and great company in several other auto channels, but keep posting top rate videos and see what happens.
Those years don't seem to be for sale. The earlier ones with the lifter ticking ticking problem are for sale all day long. I thought I got lucky and located a 2012, but car fax showed was in severe accident... PS the manuals are rare
You are right it seems like the previous owner swapped the bumper (maybe damaged the original one?) for the facelift one sometime after the facelift came out, didn’t even think about it, thanks for sharing!
I’m mostly sold, but is it reliable? BMW of course has that rep of being relatively unreliable and I would like to drive this with little to no headache
Honestly the suspension isn't that comfortable to begin with (especially if you are running 19" rims. But if it is really uncomfortable I suggest getting the suspension checked out by a mechanic. Could just be worn out from the years. It could improve your ride a lot!

We own a 2014 28i in white, what a car we just love it
I got a 2009 Z4 sdrive35i as well. It is definitely a massively under-appreciated vehicle. Puts a big smile on my face everytime I drive it. Great review, earned my subscribe! Keep it up, look forward to more content.
Thanks Wuttup! And I couldn't agree more, what a masterpiece of a car
I have a 2009 Z4 35i also. It has about 144,000 miles on it but has been very reliable. Ditch the run flat tires asap though.
Does it hold up?
@@GamingHistory. It sure does
@@EmmettLBrown2015 Nice! I am a big N52 fan, did the car ever left you stranded?
Definitely cheaper than Porsche or Mercedes but reliability is just above average ( for a continental car)
Finally let's get to the crux, why this over a Cayman/ Boxster?
I can tell you this is MORE comfortable than both. It's still sporty enough way more than any passenger car, but the Cayman/ Boxster handling is one level higher. Therefore this car is great to
1. Flex
2. Top down
3. Long distance comfort drive with some mountain carving/ togue jaunts.
4. Daily-able thanks to reasonable maintenance and comfort.
5. Save fuel with the 2 litre 4 cyl.
Cheers.
The 20i is also turbo, just detuned. They’re both the N20
E89 Z4 is my dream car and has been for years.
I got a silver 2010 35i back in 2019. Now that it's almost paid, I'm finding it incredibly hard to let go. Prolly never gonna sell it.
Great video man. There’s not a lot of good reviews on this car. This car is my dream car and I’m looking forward to buy it soon!
Keep up the brilliant videos
Thanks Ash, honestly I got bored waiting for Doug to make one haha, hope you get it soon!
@@tbvjqor123 if you have to make a visit to the dealer every 3 months then maybe you got yourself a lemon?
I own a sdrive35is... I've owned and driven many cars, but this is by far my favorite car I've ever owned.
Even if I get a porsche or the new g29, I don't think I'll let my e89 go - too beautiful!
The is has to be one of the best cars in our generation, never let it go
I leased two 35is's and they're so fun to drive. LOVED that car, I wanna get another one some day.
I Drive a BMW Z4 M Coupe, and I absolutely love it! I like the fact that chances are I'm the only one on the road with one ,They're very rare and fast !
That's got to be true because I've never even seen an e85 z4, let alone an m coupe
@@market_car they were of limited production, and people who have them tend to like to hold on to them.
I love the Z4. I predict that the E85’s will finally get love they deserve. Get them now while they’re cheap
100% agree, although e99s are starting to get cheap too
Proud owner of a 2014 28i since 2017. Melbourne red, M sport, 19" wheels and it's a manual. Although the G29 is getting more common, I still see some heads turning while driving.
I think it'll become a classic over time.

Thanks for the review! My favorite BMW of all time.
Thanks CSKA!
I took the same year/model/color model today for a test drive, and got back home to sleep overnight on to buy it or not. In meantime, I stumbled on this video, and decision is made :) Hvala brate!
Good luck trying to sleep tonight, brate
Got the 35is.
Can confirm its a pretty awesome car.
Im paralyzed and I love the paddle feature on mine as I can take it to the canyons and use my one hand for gas and brake while the other controls turning, up and down shifts. My older car (Camaro) I just had to use automatic shifts and that’s boring. So far this is my all time favorite car.
Very glad to hear it’s helpful even beyond just being convenient. Hope you’re still enjoying it! Cheers.
Man that such a beautiful car! I am starting to plan on how I am going to get one. Awesome review also keep it up!

I have one of the last of this gen with the 1m engine and LCI LED’s it is a fabulous cruiser. The 310 litre boot space is way more useful than I ever thought it would be. The dual clutch box is wonderful, much nicer than the G series.
How much of a difference do the LEDs make? Interested
This cars visuals are stunning, and you got it in a great color!
Completely agree, beautiful car and beautiful color too!
Interested where folks are finding these prices... in The Netherlands you're not finding an e89 for less than around 17k Eur (prices have stayed flat or even a bit higher in the last 3 years)
2:20 Lol, you get a sub for that joke alone 🤣.
"the sponsor of this channel is you!" Caught me off guard haha, awesome video ^^

Nice review, lovely car, timeless design, to me E89 looks far better than last generation g29, classic and elegant design, a true BMW
Looking at this as my next car ( I own an Ls400 and want a quick turbo coupe that feels as close to single seater.. close to the road as possible). I love the looks.. love the engine base.. Which do you like better and why?
Thanks a lot and I really enjoyed your essay about BMWs
The Z4 doesn’t have a V6, but has a Inline 4 or a Inline 6 depending on the model.
@@whitetiger6814 yes inline 6. I by mistakly said V6 sorry. I'm sure 35is has Inline 6
I own a 2014 Msport Z4 and it’s a great car to drive and own.
Hope you're enjoying it as much as I am this one, what's the msport package on the e89 by the way? Haven't heard of it

Just one question does the check engine light ever go off 🤣🤣 i seem to have it come and go back abd forth always wiring issue or rat bites
