So glad no body was hurt, it was a truly shocking incident.
Going back to the pattern.....like you I struggled and cursed that gusset and my fabric nearly ended up as cleaning rags.
Like you, I also pieced the paper pattern and couldn't understand how it fitted beautifully on the paper.
Like you I cobbled together the first one I made and made a wearable top but I was determined not to let it beat me.
Like you, I made another one.
This time, I did my tailor tacks in two different colours. Red for the large ones and green for the small ones.
Oh my goodness! The pattern came together absolutely perfectly.
I am so pleased I managed to overcome the difficulties in this pattern and just wanted to share the easy solution!
I'm off to make my third one now!
    Regards, Joyce.
By the way, my handle " the fat controller" comes from my time working for a world famous, American slimming club!

So - traditional eastern European pheasant blouses drafted from body measurements do include a gusset. I think it supposed to keep the fit under the arms closer. I struggle with a lot of fabric under the arms in dolman and raglan type garments. I actually might try this pattern in a 12. Jan - it looks gorgeous on you with a beautiful, drapey fit.

I'm glad everyone is ok. It concerns me, though, that some of your pictures fell away from the wall and the window. You may want to consider having an inspector come out and take a good hard look at where that wall attaches to the ceiling, foundation, and other walls. I'd also show him the video.

🤯 Well, that was shocking!! Glad that you, your house and the driver walked away unscathed!! RE: The Simplicity 1940's Peasant Blouse pattern I have the original pattern from my mother's stash! In the California town I grew up in peasant blouse type of styles are EXTREMELY common (I am including the "Mexican" embroidered dresses, both tops and dresses with yokes or neck bands, etc.). All of the blouses and dresses that I saw and made have gussets. Moving north to the SFBay area, my step-daughter found and loved this peasant dress she got from a Thrift store. It had a casing of elastic in the "bodice" that gave it empire (kind of like the 1820's, Jane Austin type of) style. I noted that it was made from a simple cotton and the seams had not been finished (so there was some fraying - I serged them). I figured it had was homemade. The thing is, when she raised her arms (even slightly - like to rest her arms on the table) the sides of the dress hiked up which hiked up the whole dress. So, she was always pulling it down. (She seemed oblivious to pulling it down. I wasn't.) Of course, if you make a blouse which doesn't have an elastic casing for the waist &/or your shirt isn't cropped so that when you lift your arms, you're letting everyone know what bra you're wearing &/or you don't tuck your shirt in, there is no problem. But if you put a gusset under the arm there is never a problem.

Thank the Lord that you have a steep drainage ditch and that woman’s car didn’t go into your house and more importantly, into you!
Thank you for the warning on this pattern, as well as the alternative options. It’s nice to know when something isn’t even worth attempting! I’ve always thought that the bit about “pieces numbered the first time they are used” meant that they’re numbered in the diagrams the first time they’re pictured and then the number is no longer shown. It definitely makes so more sense for them to be numbered in order!

Ive been sewing since 1972. Patterns back then, according to my late mom, were easier than her patterns of the 30s and 40s. Their patterns had no marking, only holes . They were expected to be smarter I suppose. I did not learn sewing in school and it shows. :D Enjoyed your video!

Good to know! I almost picked up that pattern at the JoAnn's Simplicity pattern sale this last week, but then decided that I didn't need it. Wasn't listed as an Easy or Jiffy pattern, which I thought was very odd, so I passed on it. An underarm gusset?!? Why??? I've got other peasant-style top patterns that I can use if I want a top. Like you, I also made a peasant top in jr. high sewing class (early 70's). Sewing (and cooking) was a required class for girls back then, so every girl made at least one peasant top she wore to school and made a simple draw-string bag for carrying gym clothes to/from school. Some patterns confuse me, I am glad I am not the only one. God was with you and the driver of the car, what a shock. Two weeks ago, on Sunday afternoon I heard a very loud thump. I looked out and there had been an accident in front of our house. A car went left of center and hit a motorcycle. Unfortunately, the couple on the motorcycle were killed. Their bodies were lying in the street motionlessly and torn apart. It was such a helpless feeling knowing there was nothing we could do except provide sheets to cover their bodies. When our neighbor saw that I was bringing something to cover their bodies he walked up and got them from me and told me to go back to the house that I did not need to see what he had. I had no intention of going to the bodies and was grateful he came to me. We came together as God's people and just prayed. I pray they knew the Lord; their lives were taken in an instant. They were from out of town and were coming off the parkway of the Blue Ridge Mtns. after a day enjoying their ride. Please be in prayer for their families and the young lady who hit them. She was 20 years old and never even hit her brakes. I cannot imagine what she is going through; her life changed forever in a second knowing she took 2 lives. The families of the couple need our prayers.

Wow, that must have been scary for both of you! Regarding the pattern, there should be no need for a gusset in raglan sleeve construction. The shaping for arm mobility is built in to the raglan, that's kind of the whole point of the raglan shape lol. A square under arm gusset is used quite commonly in historical garments that are constructed solely from rectangles/squares like shifts and shirts. They can be a bit puzzling to sew the first few times but like anything in sewing, it's a learned skill. Your tops turned out pretty cute regardless of the frustration with the wacky pattern.

Just found this video after seeing it on TikTok! I'm so glad no one was hurt! Glad your neighbor added the outside footage to go along with what happened on the inside. What are the odds that you were filming at the same time this happened? Will be showing this to my subscribers this weekend.

That was quite a video. I thought the review of a simplicity pattern was very interesting….. and then I saw the flying car. I love that you took all in stride. And the stained glass was okay too. Amazing

I don't understand why they put a gusset in a peasant blouse pattern with a sleeve that short. I think putting up some kind of heavy metal fence or a row of very large rocks (between the road and your house) would be necessary. You both were lucky this time. My neighbor on the hill above my house, had a truck to slip out of gear and hit my TNT metal carport. The truck totaled my carport, destroyed my extra lawnmower, and many other things. The neighbor had a large building built where that truck was setting (when it slipped out of gear). I feel much safer now that the building is between us. If it had not been for the TNT carport, that truck would have gone through my house (killing me). Yes. I had another TNT metal carport installed where the other one was. I was shown in a dream where to install the first TNT all Metal Carport (which saved my life and my home).

Truly frightening traffic accident! So glad neither of you was injured! 🎊 After that, the pattern frustrations were probably a minor blip on your radar, I guess. 😂 Hopefully that’ll become only a hair raising story to tell your grandchildren someday.

Jen, you need to look at your video. It looks like the driver hit your house and bounced off. The collision knocked the stained glass piece off the window and a decoration hanging on the wall to the right of the window. Check your house again.

haha, I made a 6-gored skirt with a side zipper from a pattern in my 8th grade home-ec class! Funny about those things that we remember forever! It was bell-shaped, a muted green brushed denim with little stars all over it (from Cloth World) !

The Lord was certainly with you and the woman in the car. Thank God for everyday miracles! FYI, just wanted to let you know Tiana’s Closet has a few PDF patterns tat can be either sent to a printer or downloaded and pieced together for a peasant style top and a couple that can be modified from a dress to a top for the same affect. She has some really nice patterns on her site, they are all free, and she usually uploads 2 or more patterns every week. Even with all the problems, your tops come out looking beautiful.

I have made gussets for my husband’s work shirts many times, just opened up the arm and side seams a few inches, cut out the squares and sewed them in. My husband is a big guy and needs the extra fabric to be able to move comfortably. I think it is one of those sewing jobs we do when there is a need, so we figure it out. I think your struggle was because you were trying to follow the pattern directions and over thinking it!

Oh wow! God is SO good. Ya, I don't think there is a need for a gusset in a peasant blouse. A long time ago, I watched a professional tailor making upscale men's suit pants. She said gussets are only used because the fabric they cut from us not wide enough off the bolt to allow for the crotch curve, so gussets are used.🌻
