This game single handedly ruined gaming for me because nothing else can fill the void. It was such an accomplishment to reach max level and defeat end game bosses and get iconic pieces like Byakko’s Haidate
So many memories with this game. I played back on PS2 in 2004. Being a huge FF fan, I didn't realize how brutal the game was gonna be, but I loved it anyways. So many hours trying to shoehorn myself into Dunes parties as a RDM and I remember all that time I spent in Qufim and Yuhtunga. It's crazy to think I probably put 400+ hours into the game back then and didn't do a single story quest. It was only a few weeks ago that I played on CatsEyeXI to relive a little bit of that 75 era and goddamn it was even more satisfying coming back to as an adult. Coming back to XI with more patience to read dialogue, a better frame of mind for grinding and knowing how imperative it is to recruit for parties made the experience exponentially more enjoyable. It's a little rough at first but once you get your config dialed in, it suddenly just feels like home again. Great video, man. Here's hoping for a FFXI remaster in the next decade. Unlikely but fun to imagine.
Same to all of this, except I started in 2005. Still back in the glory days. And I went to the Nasomi 2005-era server, where I was able to re-live some of that magic, getting to 75 and actually getting an endgame LS to do Sky and Sea. People complain that it's "not the same going back as an adult" because they feel they don't have as much time to commit as they did back then, but personally it was fulfilling in its own way being able to have the patience and appreciation for all the little things that I might've overlooked way back when. I stopped playing shortly after WotG came out, but a few months ago I decided to make a retail account just so I could solo my way through all of the years of story that I missed. That was a special experience in itself, if completely different due to lacking the challenge and accomplishment of the gameplay. There are a LOT of us out there with the same memories from back then, I feel like if they ever release any sort of official "classic era" retail server (a long shot), it would be great to have everyone come together and re-play the game again officially, instead of being scattered across a number of different private servers.
Played from 2004 - 2009 when I forced myself to quit because yeah, addicted was the right word. Anytime I wasn't at school, work, or sleeping, I was playing 11. Actually created a new character back during covid and played again for about 6 months. Completed all the story content I hadn't been around for and god damn if the ending of Rhapsodies wasn't completely gut wrenching...I was literally in tears watching that final cut scene. Definitely a different game now compared to what it was originally but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. It managed to change enough to keep it accessible for anyone who wanted to dive in and explore even today. I don't think any game has quite captured the magic that 11 did and I don't think any game ever will again.
I'm a huge fan of the game. I've been playing it off and on since 2009, when it first released on PC. That level down sound still traumatizes me to this day, lol. The game has so much challenge, and teamwork is absolutely necessary. In the days before level syncing was a thing, parties had to rotate in and out people whose levels had increased too high because the party would receive an exp penalty. Once you have leveled out in a level camp, you migrate to another party. Taking down mobs 2 levels higher rakes in large amounts of exp, but the con is that your party would need to take a break as those fights will drain magic users MP bone dry. Bring pots and food for refresh can keep the party beating at a steady pace. You'll had to be there to experience it. If you had a well competent group of players that knew how to play their jobs, the sweet sweet exp rolls in quite nicely as each kill would give you a chain bonus. Its mechanics like this that forces group planning before you go out into the wild. Be careless and you'll be treated with the stench of dead bodies littering the floor. Back in those days, fights at lvl 15-25 in Valkrum Dunes aka Da Dunes were difficult. But with the right party makeup: Red Mage for backup healers/enfeebling/lite magic nukes, Pld for tanking and self-healing for threat management, Thief for massive damage using rear sneak attacks, Bard for songs buffs that could change the tide of a battle, Dancer for stacking debuffs and party wide combat healing/debuff removal, White Mage for potent group healing/raise and BLM for Magic Bursting after a level 1 skill chain burst for massive magic damage output The list goes on and on. Its a wonderful game, but onboarding for the first time can be pretty difficult. But no worries, shout out for help, the community is really nice. Have fun all!
I still play. Still love it. When I swapped to ashura server, I found lots of people who are still very passionate about the game. My other server was pretty desolate.l, which is why I changed to ashura. It's not the same game it was back in 2006 when I left, but it still has a lot to offer.
This what I was supposed to play when it came out but as my future would have it ..I left outta state and partied with my best friend right after high school for two years only to forget about the money I saved for buying the play online modem for the ps2.. lol maybe I was spared ? Lol now as an old guy I’m like .. ffxiv boredom now and more curious as to jumping into this game .. but scared about being sucked in to the time drop.
They should really make this free to play at this point. I know ow square is still developing for this game and thays what the small.subs pay for now days. However as old and lack of a player base it's hard to pay a sub for a mainly solo experiance.
His sister didn't get slaughtered, you picked a bad server to play on - my current server has about 20-40 people at most any location you go to. Retail is better now than it was years ago. Sorry, just how it is and I'm an OG player myself.

I was COMPLETELY ADDICTED!!!
I still listen to the music while working or driving today!!
I could be separated from the game for ages and still have the music ring through my head.
Same here. Hardcore player from 2005-10 but just listen to the soundtrack anymore.
I really enjoyed the use of pixel sprites when showing off sub jobs when you unlocked them. 😁

Back in 2003, this community was the greatest! I miss the friends I made and playing this game! I haven't played it since 2010.
The storylines are so immersive
I was addicted to it as well. I was a 75rdm 75rng 75bst 75whm and 75nin. Quitting was actually really hard. I quit before the 99 era
But to your linkshell all you had was 75 WHM
7500? That’s cute
everyday for 7 years and have never played a game better and i been playing games since 1980 on a ATARI 2600 on a black and white TV
the weaponskill combos were my favorite party of ffxi. i know it's a pipe dream but i wish they brought this over to ffxiv

Biggest fumble in history, sorry for your loss.
