This is beautiful, and for me captures the joy and sadness felt at Christmas time.
When this comes on the radio, everything has to stop and the volume goes right up, while I wallow in the beauty of Bryn''s deep, soothing voice and the lovely 'motherly' sound of the London Voices,and I sigh along with the rising and falling of the strings, shivers going up and down my spine.

Hearing Bryn live is amazing. A voice so big and powerful to almost shake the building and yet he could sing in the sweetest, softest whisper of a sound that could be heard throughout the hall. Now THAT has just got to be heard. An amazing voice. Thanks for the post.

I know very little German but this traditional Christmas song makes me reminisce and reflect on the passage of time and fills my heart with compassion, joy, and sadness. We've played it on Classical Christmas FM for the last 3 years consecutively. Lots of excellent traditional Christmas stuff played on that station and this particular tune is among the best of lthe lot. We usually start listening to the channel late September and continue through to the end of the year.
I heard this on Classic FM yesterday and couldn't leave my car until it ended. Totally captivated.

I heard this song sung by Sir Bryn Terfel at the Royal Albert Hall on Christmas Eve 2020 and in the midst of all this turmoil with Covid 19 etc I felt at peace . A Masterpiece sung by a Great Master. P.S. I'm not religious

The first Christmas after my mother's death I came across this version... God sent. Gentle, comforting and reaffirmed my fervent hope that she was at peace and in Heaven.

A very effective and suggestive arrangement of this melody that I too have listened to and performed in Austria. I have lived in Vienna for 10 years, just as I have often visited Salzburg and Munich: these memories, these images that I have seen live are so fixed in my mind!

Isn't this simply lovely..just delicious. I first heard this Barry Wordsworth arrangement on Classic FM a year or two ago and it literally stopped me in my tracks. I could not believe something so gorgeous and tender had been performed. Don't you just love Terfel.. what a hero

gorgeous. It doesn't get better than this. Why doesn't America celebrate - a program called " a really great voice" IT would transform the country - any country.
I agree with you, unfortunately my fellow Americans believe that a great voice is either a Miley Cyrus or a Bryan Adams. There needs to be a lot of educating and work done.
