I live outside Huntsville area, I’m going to try growing climbing beans around my okra once the okra gets 2’ tall. Every year I do things I’m told has never been done or doesn’t work. Many times I prove theories wrong. The truth is, there’s no wrong way to garden

I love your garden and attitude. I’m in my 50’s and my dad had a small garden. I started with trial and error, learned to never say never and do things my way. Some things work, some things don’t. I’m not sure why people are mean and negative. Jeslous, no life, trying to stir the pot. I hope you inspire more young people and love that you are inspiring creativity.

I love your spirit!! I am in my 60's and have only been gardening for 5 years and did not come from a family history of gardeners. You can search a topic on RUclips and get 10 different opinions. But I take some, try it, if it does not work I try another one until I find what works. Common sense is things like this are not exact for everyone (based on soil, zone, weather, etc) and we must be open minded. Keep on doing it how it works for you. We watch you to learn and have fun!!

Thanks so much! The smaller the space to grow in, the more you learn to break the rules really quick! Otherwise it really isn’t worth it for such a small harvest, which is why so many are discouraged about gardening. I want a large harvest for all of my hard work lol! 😂
Keep up the good work! Kudos for you gardening in a townhouse! 👏

Just file the troll comments in the compost pile. You're doing great and I get as much enjoyment out of watching you garden as I do digging in my own! Your idea of planting beans around the base of your maters is brilliant. Doesn't matter to me about the nitrogen as much as the shade that keeps the weeds down...which would also keep the soil cool and moisture from wicking out of sun baked soil. Proud of you!

Here’s what I’ve learned since starting to garden in 2019: 1) Try to get as much knowledge as I can, but not so much that I get confused. 2) Follow the channels that inspire me, not bore me. There’s a lot of info on some channels, but they’re boring.🤷‍♀️ (You’re not.) And the third thing I’ve learned is-3) Don’t garden like someone else because they’ll change their methods and habits like they change their shoes. I’ve seen so many that preach on how to prune tomatoes or how to eradicate pests, then they’ll do another video where they show a different method. I don’t hold that against them, times change, people change. But I just realize that when I’m watching their content, I need to make sure what they’re saying works for me. And we can watch 20 channels and get 20 different pieces of advice. We all have to discern what’s best for us, our time, our weather etc. I’m not sure why some people feel the need to critique everything other people do; it comes from a bad place in their heart I believe. Such a shame.
About the beans-every catalog or article says they’re great nitrogen fixers. Whether they fix it asap or after they die, they won’t fix it at all if you don’t plant the seed. Keep on planting those seeds, girlfriend. 👍

      @harmonhomestead7434  7 месяцев назад +1

Preach! 👏 I said when I first gardened that I was always going to plant eggplant because I thought it was so cool to grow because I had never grown one before. Now I don’t fool with. Next year I might plant rows. 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s really all about what you like and what works for you! And yes, I couldn’t get over the beans. Must be doing something right with a 7 inch difference side by side. Thank you!

This is your "neighbor" from WV. I'm 70 yrs old, and you always motivate me to think outside of the box! We don't start planting warm weather crops until May 15, and you have me so excited about intercropping!! I can't wait to get started!! I'm planting a small raised bed of popcorn for our three young grandchildren, and guess what else I am going to plant in that garden! Beans!! I am also going to use lots of lettuce to help control the weeds. I learned how to garden from my grandparents who did have a farm and from my Dad. My sons spent many summers helping me in the garden, and our oldest son loves to garden as much as I do! He's 35! Just keep doing what you are doing! You keep this grandma motivated!!

This is the first time I've ran across your videos, but I just wanted to say you are right. There is no right way to do it and you should be having fun.
If I was to recommend anything to people who question inter planting, they should check out permaculture and food forests and syntropic farming.
This will give them an idea of what it means to really intensively interplant various food crops or non-food crops.
And syntropic farming. Something that I just became aware of will give you an idea of just how rough you can be with certain plants. They chop those things down like crazy just to provide compost for the soil, ground cover and nutrients.
If you're interested, I would recommend checking them out, not because it's the right way, but just to give you an idea of how many different ways you can do it.
People can be crazy. Have fun.

      @@harmonhomestead7434 you are welcome.
If you do, for permaculture I highly recommend Andrew Millison's RUclips channel. He teaches a lot of the concepts, but even more interesting is he travels the world and shows examples of people changing the lives of whole villages by bringing water back to the landscape in draught plagued areas.
      Pretty inspiring.
And for the syntropic farming I've been enjoying Byron Grows RUclips channel.
His stuff is more focused in tropical areas, but you can modify the concepts for your area.
I've been working on a food forest around our house using permaculture concepts, but since I ran across the syntropic stuff, I think if we move soon, I'll go more that direction.
Similar concepts, but the latter focuses more on larger scale production using rows which I think long term might be beneficial.

There's so much contradictory information/opinions out there that I just give it a go. I love breaking garden "rules". I think it's great that you're showing your results. If I'm not sure something will work, I don't try it with all of my plants but rather just a few. That way if it doesn't work, I don't have an entire crop failure. I've had pretty good results when doing things that some people say you shouldn't. And side note, there's a lot of advice out there about pest control that straight up doesn't work. Maybe I have some kind of mutant super pests or something, but I call bs on a lot of it. Btw, this is the first time I've seen any of your videos.

I am in my 5th year of gardening in Oregon and every year I learn another thing that’s not exactly true.
My tomatoes ripened just fine after a frost (I’d been told they wouldn’t)
My squash plants got frosted HARD last fall. The plants I didn’t get pulled up kept frantically producing until NOVEMBER. So there’s another thing that was not exactly right.
“You can only grow carrots in the fall & spring”….i recently remembered that my parents planted them in May and harvested them in October- they were always juuust fine.
It’s nice for us to get info off the internet, and there are whole lot of know it alls, but in the long run, we have to figure it out for ourselves.

We grew up with gardening parents, grandparents and extended family. When we were first married we had a big inground garden because to us that's how it was done. We had kids and life got busy with both of us working and trying to juggle it all so we stopped gardening. Now empty nesters I'm gardening again. This time I'm using raised beds and starting a lot of seeds indoors. We talk about the fact our garden is no worse off either way. Either way. I'm in my 50s, grew up with a garden, but was never 'taught' to garden. I have my own garden now, after years of moving with the military and being unable to have one, and I'm learning by trial and error. Lots of error..lol What causes successful gardening seems to be half-opinion, anyway, I think. There's science in it, sure, but most of the people giving garden advice are basing that advice on what works for them, in their areas. Everybody doesn't want to spend years studying and documenting before they even plant their first seed. I try; sometimes I succeed, sometimes I fail, and I usually never find out why either thing happens...lol But I enjoy it, and that's what matters to me. My kids are now gardening on their own and teaching their kids as they go. And all of us are having fun and having some fresh and tasty successes along the way. Keep doing what works for you, and kudos to you for not listening to the naysayers!

When I planted my first garden I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. II was huge! I had a friend helping me a little but neither one of us knew anything about nitrogen or phosphorus etc. I didn’t test my soil or even fertilize. My soil probably wasn’t even great according to the standard of today. We ended up having over 300 ears of corn and so much other produce we were giving it away like crazy! Back in the old days people just plowed, tilled and planted without all the complication you hear today. I moved from there and went years without a garden until a few years ago. Now people make it so complicated! I fertilize with goat manure and other organic things. I add organic compost and do a lot of companion planting, add lots of flowers for pollinators etc. My point is, it doesn’t have to be complicated and sometimes it stresses me out!

First time viewer and a new suber! OMG why people have to be so mean and rude is still mind blowing to me. Love what you said about gardening: it's about having FUN! So true. And of course growing food for you, your fam & friends. This is not a competitive sport and there are no awards given at the end of a growing season. The negative people all need to keep their horrid (and extremely unjustified) opinions to themselves. You're lovely, your garden is lovely and tbh.....I could listen to you talk all damn day. Young lady I'm very happy you are gardening, and however you want to plant what you grow is totally your choice. There's no expert way of gardening, even master gardeners have failures. I'm old and have been gardening since I was a child and I'm still learning something every new season. You'll only get kudos from this old lady! When those young people you spoke briefly about can't buy food they will wish they had developed the skills you are working on now. Legumes do fix nitrogen , however heavy feeders like onions would need a lot of legumes to provide enough for one bulb. Don't let the nay sayers make you upset, just keep gardening honey. Kudos to you 👍🏼

Also, we had a year when squirrels were stealing our tomatoes and cucumbers. They would sit in a oak tree in my front yard eating them. Later that season, I had cucumbers and tomatoes sprout up under that oak. Seeds want to grow. That's what they were designed to do. People complicate gardening too much.

You just keep on doing what you're doing. I'm one that grew up with my grandparents, aunts and uncles and my parents all having gardens, preserving much of their harvest and enjoying and sharing with others. Those in my opinion were the good old days. Today it seems like there are many that want to make a bunch of money telling us that you need this and that in order to be successful in growing anything. I am into doing it more like what you are doing, just in a smaller scale as I do live in a subdivision in a small community, but still manage to have a few raised beds and container gardening and I get wonderful enjoyment out of it watching my efforts grow and give me some good tasting chemical free food and also learned how to compost my leaves and grass clippings and household waste instead of letting the trashman haul them away. I am more than twice your age and I have learned many things that you have shared that I didn't know. Like I had mentioned, I do my tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets but this year I have added some bush beans along with them to see how that works out for me. Also plan on doing that with my cucumber and squash plants. In my opinion, we need more folks your age learning how to grow some of their food as when the day comes that the store may not have it they will really be in bad shape. In the end, do not let those with the negative comments stop you from doing what you're doing, as sharing what you have learned will make for a better society. Happy to have found your channel.

Hey babe ! Greetings from Australia ! I am a lot older and as I think about retiring I have got into gardening over the last 18 months - started with my dad’s old garden that was just 1 foot high with weeds and it just expanded from there. For God’s sake don’t listen to the trolls and morons who just want to disagree to make themselves feel better ! You ARE doing the right thing - and for all the right reasons ! Agree with you totally ! Look at permaculture gardening which is similar to what you are already doing ! Plant anything everywhere ! F*** the straight row BS - anal retentive OCD stuff. You are learning by actually doing stuff ! I have the odd crop failures but it is fun and therapeutic so who gives a damn ! Now I just shrug my shoulders, give the comment a thumbs-down, and focus more on chatting with my friendly community members. Unless we can afford or aquire land We have to find new ways or don't bother at all (I want to try vertical gardening) this is going to be my second year, I think what your doing is great, I really enjoyed planting veg and not knowing exactly what I was doing, it was exciting everytime something worked and I fed my family food I grew, and I learned as I grew. I'm going to plant some beans around a few of my tomatoes and see what happens, and with raised bed gardening using all the space I have is important. ❤

Every year, my husband and our oldest son plant peppers and tomatoes and herbs and whatever they feel like in big pots with potting soil. Nothing fancy. They tend to them together. Every year, the plants do great, and we cook/eat everything they grow. They enjoy it so much.

And for each of those, thousands of people in the comments just nay-saying anything. It's not just in the gardening community. That's just how the internet is most the time.

I'd just say that people should be willing to hear criticisms or information that contradicts what they know without feeling discouraged. They should also be willing to challenge info they are given. I have given information that contradicts what people believe and I have challenged information I've been given out in the garden. Like composting weeds. I feel like its fine because I see them germinate and get smothered on a flip.
I love my crappy little plants and I am a nerd and I love to learn and to share knowledge so my plants and others plants can be better.
I'm not personally bothered if I try to teach someone to fish and they just keep trying to kick the fish for fun instead. If they turn around and yell at me I'll kick em in the water though lol
There's only so much we can do in a small home garden in a day before we go and hop on youtube or whatever.
I definitely agree on the over-sciencing part. And there is a gross amount of bad (or unwise/inefficient) information given out just to get people to buy affiliate-linked crap they don't need.
I like your messaging though. Overall its your garden and have fun with it.
All the info online makes it seem like there is a huge barrier to start a garden. I walked into the back yard and ripped out the grass in a spot. I fluffed it up. and I planted seeds. Did pretty darn good considering what that cost to do.

My response, if you plant seeds in the ground outdoors are you using seedling mix? A lot of these “famous” gardeners get kickbacks from these companies. They also, give incorrect information.

Starting plants isn’t a “You can only do this!” type of deal. There are many ways to do things and end up at the same result. I’m a nobody and don’t even have a channel (yet) but the reason many tubers suggest starting mix instead of just starting like you do (congrats on being able to do so; honestly) is very simple…it’s easier for brand new people to get into gardening. I’m former military and an old adage is “K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple Stupid” and buying seedling mix is an easy way to limit variables and allow for starting either early or indoors where insects aren’t going to kill off seedlings (the newbies are likely enough already to kill them). Starting outdoors and/or making your own mix are more advanced to pull off successfully. Also while you’re right on the kickbacks and sponsorships of some channels, it doesn’t mean the idea of buying mixes to get started is totally biased. Just my $.02 worth.

@@BigWillDogg82 I don’t think I was telling anyone to do it my way, just stating what I do. The cost of seedling mix is why I do it. The internet is full of “suggestions” it’s up to you to research and through trial and era.

Overall, a person’s garden is a physical representation of the “Gardener” and their wants and wishes. It’s about how the hard work (just planting seeds in dirt doesn’t work) of gardening makes the person feel, not how observers of the garden feel. If someone doesn’t recognize or appreciate the work done they’re free to do things in their own garden or choose not to garden at all! Are there things that you’ve posed that aren’t necessarily 100% right? Yes, but that doesn’t matter either because there are not many things that are correct 100% of the time that people or science agree on. Keep on doing your own thing and let the negative Nancy’s fly right on by!

"The nitrogen isn't available till after the bean plant dies" - Ok..... That is, usually, how nature works.
cover crops, nitrogen fixers, biomass builders .... They are investment in future fertility.
