The Science of Breeding Cannabis for Smell: Phenohunting vs. Chemohunting with Twinkle Paryani

- Riley sits down for the second time with reserach scientist Twinkle Paryani from Abstrax Tech. Twinkle and the rest of the team at Abstrax recently published a paper titled "Nonterpenoid Chemical Diversity of Cannabis Phenotypes Predicts Differentiated Aroma Characteristics"
The full paper can be found (open-access) at pubs.acs.org/d...
This paper dives into the chemistry of smell, and when cannabis breeders are breeding for unique aroma, how they should be evaluating the final product. We often attribute the smell of cannabis to the terpene profile, but there is a lot more going on than just terpenes that give this plant it's unique complex aroma.

Thank you very much! Dr Riley!
What a boss. Very confident and educated.
Thank you so much for spending so much thought and time on my question. Looking forward to seeing the science of smokeability advance the research.
No way... that's way cool. Thank you Riley and Twinkle 🎉
Like you said we all have been waiting for this research to get started, great stuff! I'll be sure to follow and read your future research
This is great information! Thanks so much!
You two are awesome!
Great video love it
Respect to those working on their own breeding ✌️
100% it’s an art of patience and careful observation
@cannabichem most definitely...hard work pays off!!!
Are you going to do a vid on how to take notes for home growers and breeders. I love the science but how do we document our results so we can reference it for the next hunt. Thank you 🙏
this is a great idea! i’ll try to find a good guest for this topic
So do we know what inputs may express different flavors in the cannabis plants?
Just tried SB36 by Dream in Sac, CA. Some of the BEST terps out rn. Rivals the wooksauce grape gas. This was a great, informative podcast. Thank you
ok genotype , phenotype , chemotype - phenotype is a certain genotype in a certain environment showing chemo typical expressions (smell etc) correct me if im wrong pls
Isn’t there microbes in the trichromes making the metabolites?? There’s microbes in cheese and plants and the cheese microbes are from the milk from the cows diet from the plant from the soil etc.
Woah, what kind of bong was that? Also just found you and im hooked!
this is a puffco peak for vaporizing concentrates!
I tried lemon merenge once, the seller said your gonna really like this one, he was right, the guy disappeared so I tried another supplier and it just wasnt the same.
Man these women are smoking some good stuff 🎉
only the best 🥦🔥💨
😎👊
❤
how did you know i was clenching my jaw lol
we all are 💚 haha
What do americans mean when they say "gas", gasoline or gas? And is there a difference between "gassy" and diesel strains?
Yes some are kerosene gases or pungent earthy gases or citrus gas such as sour diesel. I’m a gas head for sure. You can always know if someone in the room has gas in their pocket or their car. NYC Diesel is a grapefruit tasting gas.
Some leave a very pungent chemical or gas taste in your mouth as well. Chem Dawg was a original gas strain
@@BeardOperator thanks for the answers, do those strains also have this "stinky-sweet" sulphurous "base note" that sticks to the baggy for ages, or is that something different? (here in Germany we mostly have either some kind of haze or this extremely pungent sweet (but not very complex) strain I never found in other places like Amsterdam)
Seems like everyday i hear 10 different names i never heard of and will never chase after, i would prefer names from the 90s, new names and terminology just confuse me so i ignore whatever I heard.
science is always evolving :)
@@cannabichemkevin Jodrey says that during prohibition growers wanted undetectable plants for home grows, so the skunk smells disappeared.
Love the talk but I beg to say everyone says and talk about the exotics but to be honest the real exotics is bm if you know u know
🤟🤙🥏
Rookies trying to teach lol. Grow a few thousand seeds for yourself then start giving advice about pheno hunting.
thanks chad!
I enjoyed your appearance on @HigherDesertExotics the other night. Looking forward to this episode too!
Adding Value ! @kr3ative
Riley are you on instagram I can’t find you?
