Hooded mergansers are pretty striking in appearance - especially the males with their black and white crests. But there’s an even more astonishing side to these North American ducks: the place they choose to build their nests. To avoid springtime floods, mergansers nest in hollow trees that can be up to five stories high. When they hatch, the ducklings’ first glimpse of the world is literally a bird’s-eye view. The only problem: they can’t fly yet. So how on earth do they make the journey from nest to water?

I’d be so confused if I was walking through the woods and dozens of ducklings started falling from the sky

Imagine being a day old and your mother wants you to leave the home by taking a fall from 5th floor. 🥴

See this is what I like. No hawk swooping in or raccoon waiting below. Just something I can watch and learn without getting bummed out.

Its like a more wholesome version of Barnacle Geese. Thanks, Mom, for only building the nest in this tree instead of a rocky cliff face hundreds of feet off the equally rocky ground.

Just imagine what they must feel like searching for their mother following her call through the woods. I would assume some of the first to make the leap would have the natural disposition to be upfront the line leading the gang forward.

Serious Question: Are hollowed out trees that common for these guys to evolve specialized claws for climbing out of hollowed out trees, while competing with other species for these same spaces?

Imagine camping in the forest just enjoying shade near a tree and some random duckling drops on your stomach and casually goes to the river nearby with other ducks doing the same thing after dropping on you.
