Viola Gang Responds to

  • Last week, I made a video called @TwoSetViolin Please Stop the Bullying of Violists.
A ton of violists and TwoSet fans left amazing comments and I wanted to make a video featuring some of those and responding to them. I filmed this all last night and this morning, Twoset released a video where they reacted to TikToks. In that video, they twice seriously complimented violists. I am not sure if they saw my video from last week or if they realized they needed to appreciate violists more on their own. In any case, I am very happy that Brett and Eddy have begun to clarify that they do respect violists. However, I still think they need to make just one or two videos with a violist or about the viola so that more of their fans can understand it and be educated by it. Some of what I discuss in this video pertains to that and some regards violists and the viola in a broader sense.
Thank you all for the support! I am elated that so many people are appreciating violists and the viola.
As a thank you to TwoSet, I will livestream myself practicing viola for 1,000 minutes since they have published 1,000 videos as of last week. This will be Tuesday and Wednesday of this week (8hrs and 20mins each day), assuming everything works out with the stream. Feel free to tune in at any time!

Not at all trying to say their content is bad - they're one of my favorite channels - I just think everyone could really benefit if they had more representation! I know they're violinists, but they are at their root a channel for classical music and seeing more representation of instrumentalists within that genre would be great. To be fair to two set, viola jokes have been around a lot longer than they have and they do have violists in some of their videos. If they stop viola jokes completely, viola jokes will still be around. I knew viola jokes long before i ever heard of two set. Ive seen that one of the violists that has been in several of the videos also models some of their merchandise on their website. He must at least be a friend. Remember that they are musicians but they are also comedians. I’m a vocalist. Jokes are told for each section of the chorus. It’s just not intended to be personal and anything other than a joke. I really don’t think that viola jokes have been a major factor in kids wanting to learn the violin over the viola. It’s the same for the trumpet over the trombone and gd forbid the tuba.

    • @Elsmn

I was hoping somebody would have mentioned this, thank you. Viola jokes are way older than TwoSetViolin, it's just part of the culture. A VIOLIST introduced me to viola jokes back in the day, and there are also stereotypes and jokes for each instrument, even though it's true viola jokes are my favourites. I think Brett and Eddy make it very clear that these are jokes, the problem is that bullies will be bullies. Just do what you love and f*** the haters.

    • @Ysmir.
      @Ysmir. 3 года назад +30

Here's the problem though: viola jokes existed amongst musicians. We all know that they are just jokes. They are not overused and they don't take away the respect for violists. Twoset introduced the jokes to many people that are not musicians, a huge part of their fan base are just young people that are only now being introduced to the world of classical music. They tend to take the jokes too far and they take it too seriously. They don't recognize teasing and turn it into bullying. I commented about it a while ago under their vids but while some people agree, most don't care. It has almost become a sport to comment the most insulting things under videos with violas in them, and when it's done cruelly and by people that don't even play any instrument themselves, it creates a negative environment for violists. I love twoset, i love playing violin but I'm ashamed each time i see people referencing twoset and then bullying violists under any yt video with classic instruments in it

@@Ysmir. Yes, that is what I believe is their biggest fault: The neglect toward the problems their fans are creating. We need them to make a PSA, exposing the jokes for what they really are: j o k e s.
In reality, twoset’s viola jokes were always intended to be harmless jokes, but the fans misinterpreted them. Twoset does not bully violists, their fans do due to miscommunication. This is where twoset was careless. They had innocent intentions, but their failure to stress that their jokes *were* indeed jokes caused problems to other musicians, and their failure to address these problems only worsened them.

  • @PaulLoh

When I was a percussionist in an orchestra, I always set up my instrumental array behind the cellists, violas, and bass. They were the sections I was able to hear the best during performances. I built a rapport with them, but never really got close to the woodwinds, brass, or violins. Honestly, I think the very nature of the large stringed instruments is what makes me relate with them so much. I've always been the underdog, so I root for the underdogs. We're the outliers, the sidelines, the lesser respected instruments. But without us, the music would be too high pitched, and lacking a backbone. We give the music stability, structure, and we anchor the beat and rhythm. After every performance, I turned to my group and congratulated them with, "Good shit, fuckers." We were our own congratulatory commitee, while everyone else heaped praise upon the violins, pianist, and woodwinds. I miss those days.

Thank you for this!!! I’m a violist and this honestly makes me much happier because I started to feel as if the jokes they were saying were actually being taken seriously by some of their younger audience. I also have to say one thing: the viola jokes get a bit irritating. I had to stop watching a twoset video because I had just heard so many viola jokes it became more of an annoying burden to hear rather than a funny tease. I still love Brett and eddy though, nonetheless; I just feel it’s more the community’s fault too. The viola is a beautiful instrument, as beautiful as the violin, cello, double bass, etc! I’m so happy to have picked up the viola as my first instrument back in middle school; I don’t regret a thing. :)

  • @patchez1995

I’ve never even touched a violin, when we were shown different instruments we could play in 5th grade for 6th grade, I was stuck between flute and viola. In the end viola won, because I have horrible asthma so my flute plans went out the window. When I went to get fitted for a rental instrument at my middle school, they said my arms were the perfect length for a viola and I was ecstatic. My friend also wanted to play viola however her arm was to short so she had to play violin, so she quit after 1 month and moved onto theater instead. I’ve always been a violist, can’t play a violin to save my life, so no not all violas start out as violins, because I sure as hell didn’t. I love my viola, and I love playing harmony, because we add the balance to the orchestra and without us the orchestra is disorganized. I love Brett and eddy, but the teasing hurts, sometimes it’s funny but too much can be verbally abusive on a minor scale. Anyways I can take the jokes but just know most of us are chill peacekeepers who won’t say anything for fear of causing mayhem. But like a honey badger you poke to hard and the peace turns viscous.
Anyways enough ranting, it was a great video thank you for speaking up when people like me have to much anxiety or introverted ness to say anything. Viola gang for life!

I love playing violin on the lower strings because I think it sounds better than the high-squeaky stuff on the e-string... but I get so many condescending comments about it being a viola (even though it’s a violin...). With those kinds of comments on a violin video, I’d imagine a lot more upsetting comments on actual viola videos... 🙁 I once got to play one of those huge 17-inch violas at a store, and I loved how it sounded - but it was over $8000 (my violin was 2k...)! 😮 Viola sounds beautiful, is a more expensive instrument, you have to read a lot more clefs, and it’s bigger/heavier which makes it harder to play than the violin! I never really understood all the jokes...😕

Watching this, I can totally relate to the Violist in the music industry because I felt the same way about the programming languages in the IT industry. I am a web developer / software engineer / front-end engineer so I work on HTML and JavaScript a lot, and HTML + JS are being made fun of in the IT community again and again with the same old joke; it just got stale over time. Some of the jokes don't even make any sense and people just agreeing and jumping on the hate bandwagon. It's rare to find a good front-end engineer nowadays because many are more interested in backend engineering.
I am not a musician (I play some instruments for casual purpose only) but as I watched your videos, I don't know why it felt close to home despite not knowing much about viola. and then realised it is because of the paragraph above.
I love twosetviolin and am a big fan of them, but whenever they made viola jokes im just indifferent because I dont understand what's there to joke about. Viola is important just like an alto in a choir (I was a soprano in my secondary school choir) and I love it when the altos harmonised with our melody. So violas are important in a symphony too and they deserve more attention and love.

One thing is that TwoSetViolin is not entirely to blame. They make their jokes, but they fully respect the viola and those who dedicate their time to it. The viola is a beautiful instrument that deserves its own fair share of respect. It’s the community taking the jokes too far that would be the problem. They have made videos featuring violists, who fully accepted the *jokes* what with that being what they are and even making some of their own. The joke has a lot to do with violinists as well, as that person said. The joke is about a stereotype that the viola is bad, and violists are egotistical. It does not correlate very consistently with reality, as it is just that, a stereotype.

After all, a sandwich is named for what's in the middle, not for the bread on the outside. Instrument stereotypes have been around since dirt. • @irisgirl86music14
    @irisgirl86music14 2 года назад

Thank you for this video. I heartily agree with you and I agree that perpetuating existing bad stereotypes by goofing around isn't a great thing to do. I think the lack of violas in youth ensembles is influenced by a lot of factors: violins are just that much more exposed, there are many more violin teachers out there and it's easier to find one, there are lots more Suzuki violin programs, there is more availability of good fractional violins than violas, or else restring a violin as a viola, which is a workable solution. Both my brother and I started on violin and began playing viola at age 12 because of ensemble needs and both of us used restrung violins because of our size. I transitioned to a proper viola 2.5 years later, and my brother became big enough for a real viola about 6 months after starting viola, but has not acquired a real viola yet due to COVID. There certainly are lovely fractional violas, but finding a decent one can be tricky (depending on where you are) and we were lucky that our restrung violins were decent instruments. There are also other instruments which are seen as less accessible and popular, such as the oboe, bassoon, French horn and double bass. Those instruments do have some practical challenges associated with it, such as cost, or size (in the case of the contrabass) or double reeds just being finicky, but they are great instruments and they deserve to be more widely recognized. I was exposed to the viola in some capacity before age 12. I used to think it was the same size as a violin, I just knew it had a different tuning and I thought it sounded pretty but didn't think much about it until age 12 so yeah.. I had considered giving up violin for viola, but decided it wasn't the right thing for me because I still do love the violin and have a lot of compelling reasons to be a violinist, but at the same time I have many compelling reasons to play viola, and piano as well. If something significant happens and I really decide to switch to viola full time in the future, I will decide about that when I feel it's right, but until then, I shall play both.

As a child my dream instrument was the harp, then the viola. I liked the viola because it had a warmer sound than the violin. Then few years later I fell in love with the violin, because I'm a ballet dancer and most ballet music is lead by the violin. I still have huge appreciation for the viola though and when I learnt about the existence of viola jokes last year (when I saw TwoSet for the first time) I was shocked, because I never imagined.
I've personally being standing for aspects of the world of classical music TwoSet doesn't always appreciate or value, and I think sometimes they're just not inclusive to the entire world and value the most the pieces they're more familiar with.
So I started commenting repetitively under their videos to represent those communities, starting with the ballet world (I tried to clear things up whenever they included ballet in their videos without actually treating it correctly). I also stood for Opera and for violas, and I started posting appreciation posts on Reddit about violas. Sadly I am not a fan of jazz, pop and other communities that are underrepresented in TwoSet Violin, so I don't have the ability to do the same for everybody, but I hope every aspect of the Classical world/musical world can be well represented and respected❤️

I have a student who is a violist and while, as a violinist, I love TwoSet, there is now way I would refer my student to them because, well, he doesn't need all the self-esteem bombing. Hope this effort helps TwoSet to move away from viola jokes (or, um, broaden their range of targets).

YES! As someone starting to learn the viola I am very happy to have found your channel. I love twoset as well and am a subscriber, but considering the amount of impact they have on so many people, being musicians or not, I would be nice to see they actually respect the viola. When I told someone that I was starting to learn the viola, she made a comment that it's for the "less talented" people and that I should try the violin. It's quite upsetting to see that these "jokes" have gone too far and can really have a negative impact on the self esteem of many, especilaly young, violists.

my older brothers were violinists but transitioned to viola in high school. I'm in high school myself, but I'm a violinist and pianist. I had to learn viola for string groups and sometimes orchestra. I am in love with the deep, rich, majestic sound that the can viola create. (though a lot of instruments can.) I have always known twoset's viola jokes were... well.. jokes. I'd never bully someone for their instrument, I appreciate everyone as long as they are respectful. though there isn't as much repertoire for violists out there, the stuff that does exist is wonderful. more love to violas! we love you and appreciate you, and us violinists really wouldn't be here without you. 💗

I actually think about picking up the viola because of twoset. I realized that the viola is a nice instrument and that I prefer it over the violin back in primary school when we learned about orchestral instruments. But I never got the idea to just pick it up and learn to play it, because there still was this stigma that violin and co are for rich people and you have to give an arm and a leg to be able to play it as a common mortal. This was around 18 years ago. Twoset made me realize that everyone can play any instrument they want as long as they put in the effort. Also I learned that affordable instruments exist! Now my 3 biggest issues left are:
    1) I now myself and I have a hard time establishing new habits. Chances are that I'm going to practice the sh*t out of it for some days to a few weeks and then never touch it again.
    2) I work 3 shifts and I don't know when I should practice because either I'm asleep or everyone else is. Also I'm super paranoid about being heard and I almost can hear some stupid comments from my grandparents already...
    3) the thing with the size!
I'm small. Like small small. Didn't grow since I was 12. I read about it online a lot (most were talking about violin but I think it's adaptable to viola) and everyone said that when in doubt, children should get the smaller size first because it will be easier for them. There were also some instances where small older students were told to start on a 3/4 violin for the same reason. And I found a chart which can help finding the right size for children by measuring the left arm in a certain way. According to it 3/4 size violin or 14" viola is recommended for me. Now I don't know what to do. Should I get a cheaper 14" viola so I have it easier and not too much money is lost if don't continue, and upgrade to a bigger size when I can make the trip to a luthier/instrument store, and figure out what the best option for me is. Or should I take a 15" or even 15.5" from the beginning?
If someone (read this far and) has some advice for me, please tell me. Thank you
Edit: I forgot to say that the next luthier/proper instrument store are 2 hours away, so I can't just go there and I'd have to buy it online. I thought about getting this one www.thomann.de/gb/roth_junius_europe_14_student_viola_set.htm

I'm a young magician and I chose the viola because not a lot of people play it. When I go to search up some viola pieces, most of the time it comes up with "violin" pieces. It kind of makes me annoyed because the violinists are getting more attention than the violists. My younger sister (who used to play the violin but changed her mind and chose band) also said that violists are not really needed and that band is better than orchestra, which got me upset. I love my instrument so much, though, I will never change my mind.

Thank you for your videos Viola King. I totally agree that some may legitimately feel that the Viola is an inferior instrument because of all of the jokes on TwoSet. I just saw one yesterday where Eddy bought Brett a Viola for his birthday. Then they pretty much roasted and be littled the instrument. I imagine that it was supposed to be humor, but ha ha. 😒
I had so many more opportunities playing the viola vs being in a sea of violins. The musical experiences are ones I will always cherish.
I would love to see TwoSet talk more about viola, especially how not everyone plays the same sized instrument like they do with the violin. There isn't just full-sized viola and done. It is based on the size of the player. I've never seen that addressed and it might be really interesting to people. Plus the rich sound of the viola is beautiful. Thank you for your videos. 💛🌼💛

I am chiefly a viola player but still play lots of violin. I remember checking out a community string orchestra about a year ago. It consisted mostly of youth as well. I was the only viola player there. The director had a few cello and violin players playing the viola part. There wasn’t any stigma towards the viola among them that I could feel. I was disappointed to see no efforts to get any of the youth to take on the viola as well. It is such a good skill to have. So many professional violin players to go to teach. Why not know some viola? I feel that going back between the instruments has only improved my ability, not only in the instruments but also on the parts typically played for each. There is a compromise which is that progress is slower but i am okay with that. Viola will always be number one in my heart but I love all the four string instruments as the expression is so different for each. I even started learning a bit of cello and maybe one year I will try to learn some bass. Strings unite!

Bring the viola to Indian music. We play at pitches between violin and viola range, if only we had strings for playing solos between D# to F, a 16 inch viola would be acoustically ok for that. Viola is great for accompanying male voice pitches too. We don't have a B clef to read and any instrument can play the entire repertoire and improvise. We sit and play so you don't need to support the instrument on the shoulder. You can even support the scroll on a stand and play and no one will complain.
Oh and have you heard of the alto violin (the vertical viola?) It is incredible.

As a violinist, my first professor in the conservatory encouraged me to play the viola because he told me that it is an advantage for me to play the viola as a violinist. At first, I thought he was belittling me because I was not a very talented violinist under his studio.. But still I followed his advice because I heard a senior of mine playing the arpeggione Sonata on the viola on the school lobby and that sparked my interests on learning it. And as of now, I really enjoy the benefits of learning it even as a my secondary instrument. Learning the viola helped me learn on how to read the alto clef and helped me to be more sensitive in my chamber music playing. I also enjoy the support role the viola gives that second violins can't. 😁 ✌️ And practically, playing viola gave me gigs back then since there are a few violists around. That's why I never hated the viola from the start because I realized its importance not just as a ensemble instrument or solo instruments but also as a dignified member of the classical music world. I still graduated as a violinist because it's my dream but I really love the viola. ☺️

Not to suggest this isn't an issue, but perhaps this would make violists feel better: speaking as a non classical musician, I actually developed an even greater respect for violists from the jokes because it gave me the impression that they love their instrument and art so much since they really aren't doing it for the glory, if that makes sense? In some ways I think it's less cool for people to just learn the coolest flashiest instrument that has the most well known solos available to them.

I always see the violin as a guitar and the viola as the bass. Both are important in making versatile music. One of the few reasons why people look down or overshadow viola is because violin tends to play more wider range of music, especially in solo performance, whereas viola is more of a supportive instrument which usually fits in an orchestra, quartets, or any other accompany performances. Viola can play solo music too, of course, but it lacks range on higher scale of mid to high pitch. Violin lacks low scale, but many pieces tends to have mid to higher scale passages making it an almost all-rounder instrument.

I don't play any instrument, but I love music and I stumbled to TwoSet just a few days ago. Binged their videos and all. Of course, I encountered the platoon of viola jokes and yes, I find them funny. I understand how that can make violists feel unrepresented somehow, but that wasn't the effect for me.
They were all humorous and I didn't take it that they actually don't like viola. The way they joke about it made me curious of the instrument, as I didn't even know it existed. I took their jokes as the way they try to actually introduce to non-players like me what a viola is. Kinda like the reverse of their jokes. It makes me wanna pick a viola and try to learn how to play it for starters.
The negative effect of these jokes would obviously fall upon those younger people, taking them literally and seriously. It really needs an open mind and maturity for them to understand what it all actually means. TwoSet has a large audience and it's truly necessary that they represent the instruments 'properly', for the lack of a better word. Hopefully they can send a clearer message across to those young musicians.
Thanks for sharing your insight. :> Viola is an awesome instrument. It brings the orchestra the cool and grounded feel as it is played. Rise, Viola gang! ;>
