Bromo had actually been shut for a period over the 2-3 weeks before I went there so my timing was very fortunate. Apparently a couple had gotten engaged slightly further on from the summit where there was another platform surrounded by more woodland/shrub land, and the morons didn’t consider that throwing a flare (then leaving) might ignite it given the direct Javanese sun… $300,000 USD worth of damage and a 2 year prison sentence later, it was resolved! And they were not western tourists by the way (I heard it said that they were Indonesians) 🌋

Absolutely bl**dy stunning views. So envious of this experience James. We were prevented from climbing Vesuvius by brush fires so missed out. This is in another league tho. I hope you cast the ring of power in young Frodo. Proper miles of Mordor scenery! Never seen anything like it and you bested those steps like a beast!
It was ridiculously cheap too - the village fee wasn’t applicable in the end, nor was there a fee due at a similar second gate, or any entrance fee to speak of (at least, I wasn’t asked for one). In all, the train cost less than £5 return, and the scooter hire was £7.50 with an additional £2.50 in fuel (and frankly, the drive was just as much fun as the hike). In Malang, East Java, there are Sendang Biru Beach, Bajul Mati Beach, Balekambang Beach, Kondang Merak Beach, Ngliyep Beach, Modangan Beach and many more beautiful beaches that are rarely visited by tourists.
Ijen looks incredible, would have loved to have seen it given more time… but per usual, I was only there for the day on my adventure. Thanks for the suggestions
