Should be any automatic lose for the team if a pitcher gets caught like this. Dont tell me that the head coaches are not involved or had no idea this was going on.
Pitchers being caught with illegal stuff should result in an immediate forfeit from the team. That would make the coaches, players, and fans all work together to prevent this shit... What pitcher is gonna cheat if its gonna cost their fellow teammates and coaches the game? What fans are gonna want to pay money to watch a game live if a cheating pitcher is gonna end the game early?
I don't know why but while watching this I thought of the movie Major League when the older pitcher was talking about putting substances on the baseball LOL
Yup because putting stuff on your baseball is comparable to what the astros did. Astros are forever tainted by 2017 and random comments like this prove it
Notice how Niekro's hands went straight to his back pockets when the ump asked for his glove. And then he emptied his back pockets and tried to throw away something in his right pocket hoping it would be missed? And that "something" got his butt thrown out of the game. HAH! And I find it hilarious when they're caught cheating and get all riled up, like Smith of the Brewers when the ump felt the pine tar on is right arm and signaled he's out. Bunch o' babies!
I was at this game with my grandparents and didn't get why everyone "hated" him so much because he made that ball fly, I now realize he was cheating, btw this was the only baseball game I went to
I only saw one game personally in my entire life. I live in a country where soccer and baseball is so unpopular. That we don't even have a national team.
in baseball, for pitchers it's generally sticky substances like pine tar or spider tack. pitchers like these substances for the added grip they can give on a ball resulting in better pitches. the legal way to get a better grip on the ball for pitchers would be a rosin bag which you oftentimes see a pitcher use between throws. it dries up their hand for a better grip, like how an olympist uses chalk for grip and stability.
So i get a spit ball, or a Vaseline ball, or a scuffed ball. They will fly funny or curve much much faster. There are OBVIOUSLY CHEATING when doing that. But Pine Tar doesn't do that. It has ZERO effect on the flight of the baseball. What it actually does it makes the pitcher have MORE grip on the ball, so if you are going to throw a Curveball you want as little grip as possible or something slimy like spit so that the ball slides off your finger with minimal friction. Pine tar adds friction cause it's sticky. It doesn't help with the fight or movement at all. It's the opposite in fact it gives the pitcher a bit more control on straight pitches but ZERO break on off speed pitches. I think pine tar should be ok for pitchers. It may keep them from beaning batters specially on cold wet nights.
No it does not make it break better or anything. Pitches that are off speed you want minimal friction so the ball slides off your fingers. Pine tar is really sticky so it adds friction. If it helps any pitch it only helps the control of your fastball. It doesn't help speed or break of any kind. Personally I think it's ok especially on cold wet nights cause it make keep the ball from plunking the batter in the head
Everyone booed on Will Smith when he slapped some substance on the ball but noone booed when he did it on Chris Rock's face.. heck he even won an award for it.. ffs

Certain substances allow you to grip the ball more and put more of a spin on the baseball. This can make your pitch curve or drop more, making it harder to hit. A comparable situation is how a corked bat allows you to hit the ball a little further. It makes enough of a difference that it is deemed an unfair advantage because it’s not something you could normally do. Hence why this is banned in MLB.
The big thing with pitchers now is spin rate, and substances like pine tar and Vaseline help them grip the ball and elevate the spin rate on pitches. That is why umpires started checking pitchers at the ends of innings this past year. Some pitchers had dramatic increases in spin rate, and a fes of them had been caught using foreign substances(although, as Hall of Fame pitcher and famed ball doctor Don Sutton used to say, Vaseline is not a foreign substance because it is made in America).
1st guy had pine tar on his neck.. this is sticky and allows you to put more spin on the ball and that makes the movement more dramatic I imagine most of these are similar
Besides foreign substances, items can be used to scuff the ball, making rough spots on the ball and making it move in ways it shouldn't. The item that flew out of Joe Niekro's hand was a nail file he was using on the ball.
