- Who wouldn't want to build a Viking Shield? I really enjoyed this project and had a great time learning about Viking Shields, Viking Armament, and Norse history. It was interesting to learn that softwoods were often used and that the thickness was usually around 1/2 inch (13mm). My shield was 31" in diameter and weighed 9.7LBS

As someone who is part of the viking reenactment in Denmark, this was fun to watch - wouldn't recommend doing it this way to build a shield for fighting, as it would be quite heavy in the long run...
But as I said, it was fun to watch how it could be made in the modern era 😊
i am from malaysia i like your shield video thank for the inspiration
Great video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
I loved that show too! Really great project and video!
Thank you!!
Awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Well done! Life must have been hard back then without those domino machines
love the fact you made your own nails for it. Bravo
I don't know how they lived without a Domino! HAHA
Very cool, I always enjoy seeing Buddy in your posts, there is a gardner in New Jersey I watch with his dog Tuck. 🐕
Buddy is the best!
Super
Very cool build Eric. Now all you need are some leather forearm guards
Awesome idea!!!
When I was apart of a Viking living history group (it was more like a drinking club) those that made shields just grabbed some box store 3/8" 4'X4' plywood... fast, dirty and practically no major investment beyond the center boss.
That's pretty cool!!
Exactly, and the metal bowl can be reused for several shields (the wood get worn out during the season if you fight weekly 😂)
Cool build. Excellent tunes! I'm not sure Buddy was 100% on board with the rawhide. Cheers! (watching with Dave the dog north of you in Traverse City)
Haha! I ended up rolling the rawhide up and drying it for him. I love going up to Traverse!
That is soo cool!!👍😎
Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful!
What a fun project. I’ll tell my wife her kitchen island is on hold, found something else to build. Seriously though, since you have the rawhide you could have made your own glue and abandon that modern wood glue. Just put the rawhide in water and heat for a while and you have hide glue. Just like the Viking would have made
I never thought of trying to make glue! I might have to do that one day.
Hello Eric I'm binge watching your new woodworking episodes and always enjoy watching A Craftsman's Legacy re-runs. Buddy is becoming a star himself :) If you ever come to the Woodcraft in Maryland Heights MO.....Please bring Buddy.
Thank you!! Hopefully we will start visiting stores again soon. I'll have to speak with Buddy's agent now...hahaha
You have some of the coolest projects and your Viking shield has to top the list! It turned out great!! Such a creative venture! I have to ask... did you replace Buddy's rawhide bone that you used in your project?? He seemed to be a little protective of his property!! Lol!! I see that he's still supervising all your woodworking projects! I enjoyed your video. Very interesting and professionally executed, as always! You and Buddy enjoy your weekend! God bless!
Thank you! I didn't end up using a bone. Pieces were too small!
@@CraftsmansLegacy now I got it! That's why Buddy got part of his bone back!! I think I'm a little slow these days!! I thought that sheet of rawhide was mighty big to have been a dog bone!! Glad your Buddy didn't have to make the sacrifice!
Such a cool project and awesome video! Interesting to learn how these shields were made and it was fun to watch how you created each component. Love those nails and the hammered metal cover! It must have taken a long time to make one of these shields back in Viking times. Poor Buddy, I can't believe you took his bone! =D
Thank you very much!
Love this video and the shield looks great but I don't have any of these power tools. Make a video on how to make one without power tools! lol
Good idea!
Eric, my Hispanic Friends call me "Vikingo" My latest ancestry puts me 30+ percent Norwegian and Swedish each!
Vikingo! Love it!
Love your show I always learn something. I do have a small complaint, the sound needs a little work. Your voice is low and the music is loud but keep up the good work.
Thanks man! I appreciate the advice!
Very good skilled craftman, good tools, fine wood artwork, but why do fantasy not authentic?
Hell ya buddy
Thank you!!
I wouldn’t take cable if they were giving it away. PBS Create is where I live.
We love CREATE TV!!
Hey brother, where did you buy your shop apron?
It's a great apron! Mike at Cavalera.
Where did you end up getting the rawhide that you used?
Tandy Leather - there is a local store in metro Detroit.
Is there an easy way to make a nice simple headboard,ur thoughts would be great, thanks!!👍😎
Of course! What kind of headboard?
@@CraftsmansLegacy I'm thinkin just a plain wooden one nothin fancy to fit full-queen size,I've seen projects where they take doors n turn it into a headboard wasn't sure if they turn out that well, haha
Ci think it would actually by two ply with grains crossing each other. It look nice though
Thanks man. 2 ply were used in the later years from my research.
I really wonder how the vikings built those shields without technical tools🤔
Do the runes mean anything though or did you just put them on cause yu think they look cool?
Great question. They do have meaning. I researched online and printed a few different reference charts.
Слишком толстый и тяжелый, это кулачковый щит и в бою он применялся как активное и маневренное средство защиты, поэтому толщина щитов не превышала 8-12мм и веса 3-5 кг.
How much for you to build one for me?
I'd be happy to build you one. Send me an email and we can discuss. info at craftsmanslegacy dot com
Woodglut has a lot of plans to choose from.
