I first heard this song on Chicago radio around 1961 with a male voice, I think Al Wilson. I didn't hear it again for about 40 years but I remember, hearing your rendition, why I loved it...and why I use it when I do blogs about Newark NJ politicians and officials. Thanks
Fan of yours since Is You Is...sing it in your version as well! Always enjoy listening to you, seeing you!!! Love your band as well! Lots of Love from Budapest, Hungary (Maggie és a Muzsikusok-Maggie and the Musicians - ironic, me being an English teacher...) ♥️🎶♥️🎶♥️🎶♥️🎶
I need to be able to listen to these songs on Spotify this one and hit the road jack/is you is or is you ain't my baby. I can't stop listening. Congratulations on your voice
Such beautiful vocals, hit every note to perfection, your vocals just flowed with the instruments. I have been listening to Al Wilsons The Snake due to my love of Northern Soul, you have taken it into another realm, the moral of the story to this song came clearly across, I thoroughly enjoyed it, thank you for sharing your beautiful voice with us, Deborah x
OMG,..That damn bass goes on and on and onnnnnn,........ Oh hell no. Sorry, but this song is best done by Johnny Rivers. (you can watch it here, but I tried to add the url,but it wont work. Just check it out,..please!) And then by Al Wilson. This is too much like a bluesy lounge singer version.
Why shouldn't I have my version up there? What if I AM a bluesy lounge singer? In my live shows I've made a lot of people aware of the song and it's talented composer. And they love it. Do I look anything like Johnny Rivers or Al Wilson to you? I'm not trying to be them. You have no idea what kind of day someone is having when you post this stuff.
Hehehe. It's nothing anyone else here has said. And I dont believe you for a minute.XD Dont take it down,(as if you would),..just clip down the bassist.
Dont be silly. Why werent you hurt by others here who said that same thing about the bassist? I didnt say your song was ugly or anything.Jeez. Personally,I just am not a fan of the bluesy style. No insult intended!
i think that had the potential to be a great cover, would like to hear you sing it without the over indulgent bass which lost me. You have a great voice and the bass player is great however too much messing when it was not required
Tillysdad1 I agree it's not the best way to START a youtube clip. In a live jazz context it's totally appropriate, which is of course what this was. I like to feature each musician at some point - you get to know each of them and it breaks up the show. I don't know how to edit the clip - not sure where the original footage is now. Thank you so much for posting.
+Annie Sellick, I hope you don't edit out the bass! This whole thing is a work of art. I loved it from start to finish. People who don't want to hear the bass can simply start at 2:09.
Apologies if you felt my comment was 'mean'; that was not the intention. However, the two minutes plus of mucking about on the bass robbed this old Northern classic of all vestiges of its soul. Not against new interpretations of old songs, but that meandering jazz turned me right off!
That's the worst version I've ever heard. Al Wilson's version (it is his song, after all) is the best, then Johnny Rivers. Also, this woman has VERY flabby arms, I couldn't look at her.
+TheGeekiestWoman Oh yeah? Well let's see your arms then, and then you can judge. Who T F do you think you are judging people on their arms? I didn't realize there were people as shallow as you.
Love this version of the song and the video! Awesome!
I just became a FAN + .... absolutely smooth, love this woman's voice and style

Hey thanks! So nice of you to write.

Al Wilson's version is itself a cover. It was written and first recorded by Oscar Brown Jr. Al Wilson covered it a few years later.
That was fantastic!!! Great group and the most sensual actress/vocalist I have EVER heard!
Very good, loved it.
I heard a lot of Mingus influence in that bassist's playing. Nice work.
Great job!!!!!!
Absolutely amazing. so professional. reading some reviews it seems some people wouldn't know talent if if feel on there head!!
Well. that was different!
Well said 😂
I am melted!!!!
6:43 Wow!
(Perfect response to that piano solo!)
Baby that is awesome
Just gained a new fan here in Japan!
Delightful!
very nice…
Grooven baby Bam!
That Annie Sellick is GOOD.
The great Oscar Brown Jr wrote it
Best version with most phallic frivolity on You Tube is by the Liverpool Five.
I've got their album, my favorite song on it. I think someone should make a country song version..... With a violin, steel-guitar....... ; )
Banging tune, almost as good as my version but still, it is banging.
omg! that was awlful! what a letdown!
OMG,..That damn bass goes on and on and onnnnnn,........

Your feedback has hurt my feelings and I'm going to take the video down now.

Over indulgent bass?? She's badass, I am loving it!!
are you listening, libs???
What on earth was that? I can only hope that Al Wilson or Johnny Rivers never get to hear this.
Starts at 2:30
you just slaughtered that song, this is not a compliment
Peggy Lee woulda done a hot Snake.
Poor old Al W will be spinning somewhere. A self-indulgent lesson in how to murder a Northern Soul classic!
Mean mean person ;)
Apologies if you felt my comment was 'mean'; that was not the intention. However, the two minutes plus of mucking about on the bass robbed this old Northern classic of all vestiges of its soul. Not against new interpretations of old songs, but that meandering jazz turned me right off!
An intro bass feature is murdering a tune? "Mucking about.." What ignorant ears you have...
Andrew Wise Tune was around long before Al got it.
True, Teddy, but I didn't care a great deal for the Johnnie Rivers version, for example. I think Al's soulful performance was the definitive version.
ditch the bass BS !

You suck
