He is placing emphasis on the basics from which he grew his own particular approach - if you can't play the basics, what can you play? That's what he is talking about at 3:50 - if you don't start out learning and developing the standard/basic patterns - 'it is always more difficult to go back and fix it later on' He is right to suggest that you start at the bottom and build a solid foundation to stand on. Good point tho, if you watch part 2 he grows these basics into more complicated rhythms.
It's interesting - Tony Allen is an extraordinary drummer, but the way he explains his own style in this video emphasizes something that drummers have done for decades before he came (playing high-hat on on the upbeat), and not what he really brought to the style (the rythm played with right and left hands) :D
R.i.P. Master of the Afrobeat.
Unassuming but the greatest ever. Fifth force of nature
Thank you Tony for the joy you have given us. Rest well.
Legend. Thanks for posting.
RIP Tony❤️

Can someone buy this man a professional drum set?
+enkibumbu That IS a pro drum set. He's playing Pearl and Zildjian.
This man is Tony Allan...
Who are YOU ??
"professional drum set" = muffled heads, triggers everywhere, everything over-compressed
