Cracking video on a cracking bit of water! Well done on your fish! Can't believe you didn't winkle one out of those upper pools!! They looked a cert.........especially with a f/c!! 😁😁
Great video Rob. I love fishing smaller spate rivers like that. The pools are more intimate and require different skills to fish the fly properly....it makes a nice change from fishing bigger rivers with the DH rod. Keep the videos coming, great work.
Great vid again Rob. Nice to see different rivers. I gave up the flying c years ago and when i do seldom spin i use a Rapala, fish always hooked in the mouth especially up here on Tweed system as you are only allowed to use one hook.
Looks like Alston, and the bridge you were fishing was stretch a bit lower down, cracking river to fish, missed the opportunity last year, like your videos.👍
Hi Rob I spoke to you when you were on the CAA stretch of the eden if you can remember. Another good video just catching up on a few . Regarding the deep hooked fish, it happens on all methods. A good example of this when I was on the South Tyne a few years ago the river was far to big 1st thing for the fly so I spun until dinner, 4 salmon all released safely no problem, after dinner once the river had dropped onto the fly, 2 more salmon caught both deep hooked bleeding heavily from the gills ,both had to be killed. Not a lot you can do. 👍
Looks a stunning place to fish Rob, reminds me of the Tees where i fish, which isn't surprising really as it's only just over the hill. That osprey footage was awesome, never seen that in real life, must of been mind blowing.
Happy new year and congratulations on the fish. Excellent vid as always. Pity about the sea trout but good to show it as it is and at least it will provide a good meal. There is no need to stop using the Flying C provided they are fitted with single hooks. Indeed bylaws mandating single barbless/de-barbed hooks on all spinners is slowly spreading across the country. It started with all the rivers in Wales (effective 2020) and all the rivers controlled by the NRW (Welsh equivalent of the EA), including the Wye. It has since been applied by the EA to the Severn effective 2022 and very recently to the Camel in Cornwall, effective Deceber 2024. With a treble on an FC there is every chance of deep hooking if a fish takes from behind as the hook catches straight away in the throat. However with single hooks I have found more hook ups in the scissors as the lure is often sliding out of the fish’s mouth before the hook catches. Agree up and across is also best as it allows the lure to fish deeper for longer

I've not used a flying c for 20 years,I've only ever taken 1 fish, and it was this one,all 3 points in the bone back of its throat, and it was a hen fish,I was gutted, they are a great lure, but have a high death rate.
Another great video. Like you I would like to if possible put back a catch.....don't apologise for keeping a fish that wouldn't survive if released though.
Personally I don’t like spinning, any idiot can catch a fish using that method but not everyone has the skill to catch on fly. I’ve enjoyed your videos tremendously in 2024 and I’m looking forward to this new year’s adventures. Happy New Year and best wishes for future fishing.
I wrote that before I saw the capture and fatality. They are ruthless things. In my more fish hungry days I witnessed the death of several beautiful fresh mid double springers on such lures. Still bothers me now. Especially cos I couldn't legally take them home. Theres nowt wrong wi taking the odd fish to eat but to have to leave dead fish in the river really upset me. And it can be common. Flying Cs should be banned Imo. Out of maybe 40 salmon on fly, mainly fresh springers I've only had 1 death, touch wood!
@@abakerslife It does not matter which direction you lob in a flying c. Fish will swallow them. There is a reason a lot of people will not use them, or allow their use.....
Happy New Year Rob , some beats only let you use flying c down stream and don’t like it being fished upstream!, I don’t think it matters at all , I’ve seen Salmon swallow large tube flies just the same , don’t worry about it 🍾🥂🥃🥃
Hi Rob……..Another very entertaining video….Looks a very nice stretch of river. I much prefer fly fishing but sometimes spinning is better option. I avoid flying C’s as they tend to cause much damage to the fish.. I think you said you were using a Switch Rod……Can you tell me what road and line you are Using……..Really enjoy the Video’s……..Keep them coming…….Best wishes for 2025 👍👍👍
well don mate nice fish, deep hooking happens to me as well when i spin so i can feel your pain, its like you said, casualties of fishing, anyways mate have good new year

A good day at the river always begins in the kitchen with a good sandwich.

Oh please, less of the outdated fly fishing snobbery. Happy New Year to you tho'
@ I did say ‘personally’
@@rongreen1538 you did, but then said any idiot could spin,
you must have been spinning yourself for not to like it.maybe you weren't very good and looked like a idiot?😊
After hooking 2 on the fly I'm not sure why you'd wanna get the noddy rod out mate!
Happy new year my man! Please include subtitles as I’m a bit deaf!…:)
i thought salmon season on tyne was feb 1st till 31st oct?
I ve gone for single hooks now on all my spinners. Can’t use barbed trebles anymore, if fish are going back.
Reference: The "cherry cake". Why do you catch crumb when in middle of field?

Well as I explained at the end of the video it was an ill fated decision but life affords us these experiences to learn from.
