I enjoyed that. I went from Barbados the Australia in 1972 on a similar deal. Crossed the Pacific and landed at Sydney on my way to Perth. I lived on Grayland's Hostel and got a job selling Royal Typewriters right a way. Left after three months and joined SABCO selling brushware from Carnarvon the Albany. I have started to put together a book of my travels. Hope to finish before I die.

      I. arrived in Sydney in July 1971 from Derby. First flight like Mr Rushton on a 707 from Heathrow to Sydney over 30 hours six stops Zurich, Beirut. Karachi Bombay, Singapore, Sydney.
I enjoyed Mr Rushton's recollections I think more detail if he could have provided it would've given this interview more substance.
I'm still in Sydney as of May 2024 in Newtown no regrets probably the best ten pounds I ever spent.

dodgeboy...,Another pommie bastard here ('62). I found if that term was used toward me with a smile....no worries.I'm 74 now & an Aussie citizen,2 kids,5 grandkids. Strangely,my dads 1st car in Oz was a Zephyr..... small world ! Your mates car is probably in the same state as our old girl.....a rusted memory. Currently (8/24) finances are hard here but wouldn't change a thing. The UK is done...no longer "This green & pleasant land". I truly love this sunburnt country.

It was so easy back then a once in a lifetime opportunity for a working class 20 year old to find a new life.

The comments Mr. Rushton made regarding the 2year minimum stay time in Australia , I believe is incorrect.
If an individual returned to Britain within the 2 year period, they were liable to pay the Australian Government the whole of their initial subsidised travel fare, not just the 10 pounds. My wife and I took advantage of the scheme in 1975, but by then it was 46 pounds for 2!! We opted to travel by sea on the SS Australis.

My wife and I came out in 1974. It cost us $75 each. Sailed on the Greek boat Britains. Never looked back, best day of my life, getting on that boat at Southampton.

As an American I have been fascinated by this subject. We’re having the same problem here. Australia to me seems like what America used to be. I’d still rather live in Oz than the States.

They were not many years away from threats of invasion from the Japanese. Of course they wanted mainly British citizens it tied us to the UK and made military protection from the British more likely. The poms me included were carefully vetted for required skills and above all you had to be . medically fit and TB free , so that you were not a burden on the Australian tax payer . It was a good scheme because you could get out of the slums and rationing. Never once have I regretted that decision

The Australians once had a great immigration system. They offered residency in a great country and in return received good immigrants like this decent man who were a benefit to Australia. Then the Australians went liberal and allowed Lebanese and Africans into their country. What a mistake that was!

Same in UK, now the country is being flooded with illegal immigrants due to the soft policy government benefit system, free accommodation, free legal aid..unlike the rest of continental Europe which is why they cross those countries to get to the UK..the country is a dump now I'm afraid..I'm hoping to get out when I retire 🙄

Australia should be much more selective who they allowed to be Australians. Some unmentionable, incompatible and oppressive foreign cultures, not to mention their alien languages/culture from Asia are obviously not equal to our Western culture. Yet one see too many educational institutions are pandering to them too much to the extent of alienating many of us who has more in common with Western culture.

A while back I applied for copy’s of our original application and records . It was interesting to read the hand written notes that the interviewer had recorded. It all seemed so long ago. It was ! 50 years now. In later life I realise that getting on the Britanis at Southampton was the best day of my life
