I performed this with my high school chorale at a concert and then at a competition. Our director told us to look right in the judges eyes at “if you open your eyes” and I’ll never forget their faces and their jaws dropping as we sang those notes after working non stop on this one piece for close to 8 months
Moriah Safford My choir sang this song too! Sadly, due to COVID we could not perform it. That part was so soooo hard. I’m very disappointed that we couldn’t compete though.
Actually the soprano part separates up into as many as 5 part harmony. I usually sing first soprano but sing 4th alone & then 5th alone at school now. Eric is a musical GENIUS. You can tell this man has a true passion for music.
Night with the eyes of a horse that trembles in the night, Night with eyes of water in the field asleep Is in your eyes, a horse that trembles is in Your eyes of secret water. Eyes of shadow-water, Eyes of well-water, Eyes of dream-water. Silence and solitude, Two little animals moon-led, Drink in your eyes, Drink in those waters. If you open your eyes, night opens doors of musk, The secret kingdom of the water opens Flowing from the center of the night. And if you close your eyes, A river, a silent and beautiful current, fills you from within, Flows forward, darkens you: Night brings its wetness to beaches in your soul.
the chord at 1:53 is absolutly insane. its amazing this chord was created in someones head. would love to have whitacre's ability to create such chilling chords.
Everyone's talking about 2:40 which is arguably the best Whitacre moment ever, but this song also has another sweet spot for me at 3:35 when those basses sing "a silent and beautiful current"... aaaaah it's so perfect
Heard this first by men's and women's chorus when my daughter was in college. Just haunting. I was crying and wiping my eyes and another older gentleman behind me reached up and touched me when they were done saying, "I know, the same thing happened to me." Whitacre is one rare genius.
couldn’t have said it better myself, i sang baritone on this in hs and stood in about the middle of the whole choir and that chord just felt like glass i can’t explain it
This is probably the most stunningly beautiful piece of music I have ever heard in my life. It gives me peace, and acceptance, in terms of the death of my beloved daughter and my mam and dad. Bless you Eric Xxx
I sang this song last year with my chior at school at our choral assessments and we did beyond good. 👍🏾👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾 one of my favorite songs I had the pleasure of singing👌🏾👌🏾😁
I don’t know if you remember writing this comment or even listening to this piece. But your comment made me burst into tears. You put my feelings for this piece into words when I could not find them myself. Thank you and be well.
For me the actual beauty comes at the 3:06 when everything begins to fall until that satisfying chord resolution at 3:12 with the faintest Ab in the background, it almost sounds like an overtone to me by the way it's so subtly placed. I'm a brass player and chord junkie at heart but man do I love choral music and the way the human voice meshes so perfectly and effortlessly with just about anything.
I just heard this work played on local classical radio in Portland Oregon, All Classical KQAC 89.9FM.It is one of the most beautiful choral pieces that I have ever heard. Just looking at the picture above while listening could rejuvenate any fatigued soul. When we hear music like this we realize that there is a purpose for our human existence.
+Jeremy Bates Well I did hear a criticism of Eric Whitacre that some of the dissonances he uses sounded "clumsy" to an individual (his tastes were more inclined to Renaissance polyphony, a la Tallis or Pallestrina)
I ask a lot of people and they say they just dislike classical pieces like this. They say "it's just really boring music". I personally love this type of music.
+Olivia Whitmarsh Is that towards classical music in general? I have moments like that sometimes, happens a fair amount when I'm listening to Baroque music. The harmonies don't interest me as much. That said, it's really fun to play/sing
I sang this last year with my high school choir. Loved it! It was hard to learn because at one part I believe it splits into 7 parts for the girls. (correct me if I'm wrong). It was awesome! He is truly a musical genius.
Thankyou for uploading this _(EDIT: in Stereo)._ Even on the official Eric Whitacre (composer) RUclips channel, the audio was only mono. You need Stereo to fully appreciate the beauty of a track like this :)
I think you both have misunderstood me. I meant that I am thankful for *THIS* video being in stereo. I've edited my comment accordingly. But in case your analysis with your editing software was from his channel, allow me to explain further: It doesn't matter if the audio you retrieved from RUclips has two channels (stereo), as that is the format they are converted to either by RUclips, or whatever program you use to download the audio. What matters is that the two tracks are virtually identical, with only compression artefacts from RUclips making up any difference. In other words... it's a mono track that was converted to a stereo format - but that doesn't suddenly make it a stereo recording.
I've sung in choir for years, but the first time we sang through this song at All State chorus and got to the 14 part cluster chord was the first time I really fell in love with music... gahhh so beautiful
im so happy that i get to conduct for my schools Madrigals and we are singing this song. you honestly haven't lived until you get to feel and embrace such awe inspiring music until you stand in the same place Eric Whitacre would stand :)
my high school's chamber choir will be doing this song. it is so beautiful, and our chamber choir is wonderful. I can't wait to hear them perform this beautiful song.
Astonishing, stunning, a most beautiful co-ordination... Eric you are a visionary, long may you bare your soul. Being moved to tears through music is an experience to be shared............BRAVO!
i love Eric whitacre, his songs are so beautiful. i learned this song last year in my madrigals class. it was crazy hard to get down, but totally worth it. we are singing another of his pieces, a boy and a girl. also very pretty. i think that once you try to learn one of his songs you appreciate it even more.
we just started learning this in my university's big choir. it's nothing short of stunning. I sort of knew immediately it was a Whitacre piece without looking at the composer. he's insanely talented and this song is gorgeous
Wow this recording is perfect. I have tears in my eyes and I'm very picky. The balance is amazing, the tuning, some weird diction in places (is this a foreign choir), but everyone agreed on the vowels, dynamics, tempo all perfect. Beautiful.
I suspect the weird diction we hear here and there is deliberate to adhere to the watery atmosphere of the poetry. You can hear where they seem to slip from one vowel to the next cleanly, but with an unconventional similarity between them in the darkest passages [innnnnnnnyoooouuuuuureyyyyyyyes]. Yet, at the fortissimo "open your eyes" the diction suddenly becomes more conventional - drawing a clearer contrast to the earlier , murkier section (from eyes closed/in the darkness to eyes open/light). I don't mind it really. The emphasis is where it ought to be: on colour and line. Diction CAN be over-rated sometimes *blasphemous to say, I know, but that's how I see it* :).
8 people were blinded with tears of joy and hit the wrong button. Or maybe they just belong with Ke$ha. LOL. Thanks for the beautiful post. Eric Whitacre's music is sublime. What a gift. Love You Tube. Sigh.

We performed this piece in the Piccolo Spoleto Festival on Memorial Day in Charleston. There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe how intensely wonderful it is:)!

@@kiraanne3524 how did your performance go?
@@submh0938 surprisingly well, not perfect. But it was good
My choir, from a middle of nowhere town in Northern Illinois, will be directed by Mr. Whitacre himself at Orchestra Hall... I can't wait!
Reese Elise WOAH COOL !!
go you!!😝
This is super late but fair fucks to ya! That's so cool!
Hi there ! So how did it go with Eric Whiteacre ? Please tell us :-)
I’m singing it in Carnegie hall this November directed by him I’m so very excited!!!
Actually the soprano part separates up into as many as 5 part harmony. I usually sing first soprano but sing 4th alone & then 5th alone at school now. Eric is a musical GENIUS. You can tell this man has a true passion for music.

the chord at 1:53 is absolutly insane. its amazing this chord was created in someones head. would love to have whitacre's ability to create such chilling chords.
His work stands on the shoulder of giants - much of his methods for composing in this work are really borrowed from Schnittke's Choral writing.
The individual chords are not difficult to construct. Combining them fluidly while also giving focus to melody, story, etc...that's the tough part.
Yes. Gorgeous.
true
I prefer the chord at 2:45 where there’s literally 3-4 notes on each vocal part
Everyone's talking about 2:40 which is arguably the best Whitacre moment ever, but this song also has another sweet spot for me at 3:35 when those basses sing "a silent and beautiful current"... aaaaah it's so perfect
Ramberta - it's great to have the soul tickled by moments of musical sublimity.
For me the best bit is at 1:50 I think the "eyes of dream water" is such an amazing part that chord on "water" is really overlooked
Final cadence for me, the way he sets up the i, VI, iv, i ending. And who doesn't like the idea of beaches in your soul?
2:40 is overrated and too loud for me...
@@Whimsy3692 what is wrong with you
Eyes of Dream Water: 1:45
Wow...the warmth moving into dissonance is incredible. Talk about being emotionally moved!
Lydia Summerville Thats the first awesome thing I noticed about this piece :)

I always enjoyed performing pieces by whitacre because it’s so raw and emotional and it made me so happy to be in choir. I truly miss it :(

my chamber choir and I performed this song when we went on tour. it's such a beautiful song; this, and "Even When He is Silent"
how big is your choir?
honestly not that large... we had about 35 kids in total in our choir, about 8 or 9 kids in each voice section.
mi.e was like 30
but we had like 10 basses so the bridge was really scarce we ot first in festival
god i love that song. and when you sing it in a resonant hall.....
Even when he is silent is masterpeice! Good to hear other highschools sang it

As a bass, 1:51 is where it is at
I agree, however the bass at the outro from 4:40 to the end is also “where it is at”.
Gian Tupaz forgot about that. Listened on my phone and the bass dipped below the speakers range
