This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen and heard. Stunning, eerie, breathtaking. God has made such an incredible universe, and the gift of music through which to experience and express it is glorious.
I don't usually comment on videos, but for this one I'll make an exception. This song reaches inside of me, twisting and turning my heart strings over and over again, making me feel in the most personal way possible. It fills in the cavernous void that's been corroding away inside my soul for the last few years, if even for a few brief moments. It forces me feel in places that have been numb for what seems like an eternity; it makes me feel in places I thought I might not have had feeling in ever again. For this, Mr. Whitacre, you have my thanks. Not only for this song, but for your music in general, which comprises some of the most beautiful and touching works I've ever heard. Thank you. As far as the video goes... I don't think anything else could have quite caught the subtle, eerie beauty encapsulated in this song as well as this video did. The video was remarkable and did nothing but match, and even almost amplify the strange, sobering feelings that the music brings up. You did an amazing job. Nice work. Thank you.
If you want to fill the void all by yourself, sing tones while playing the guitar in a monochord way. I recommend tuning daddad. Then just let your voice tell you what´s inside you - no words, just your voice. Greetings from one man who knows what you´re talking about.
Such a lovely, poignant comment Josiah and I pray these two years have been wonderful for you and that your life is filled with love and joy. I also felt such a void all through my twenties and thirties, until I answered the call to believe God at His word. I pray you too may be filled with the knowledge of the Truth and His very Spirit....He is the Creator of the universe and the Author of your life. The Lord God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and John. John 3:16 Be well my brother.
There is nothing more beautiful than the radiance of the cosmos. There is a certain beauty to it, from its darkest abyss to the brightest star, it makes a man humble and awe stricken. This song in a way captures its beauty and grandeur.
Such genius to make extreme dissonance sound so beautiful. Every time I listen to Hurt it brings tears to my eyes. So thankful for you and your amazing singers. I am in love with the soloist lead, she melts me every time with her emotive voice
Thanks so much for this post!! The Eric Whitacre Singers performed this as an encore in Boston a few years ago and I've been waiting for it to appear on You Tube. I hadn't known the Depeche Mode original (duh) and after the concert at the end of a long line of fans, Eric personally suggested I check them out. Now I am a super fan of both versions!! Love everything Whitacre AND Depeche Mode!!
the music is breathtaking but the visuals just seal the deal... I never miss an APOD and to see the universe in motion with these voices is simply amazing...
Nothing less than sweet agony as I listen to this song for the most recent number of seemingly countless times. It embodies my experience of the choral world too perfectly. When at a time, all I ever wanted or needed was there in my own arms...but never to stay. And now I am reconciled to the silence. Unable however, to enjoy it as the words demand.
One of the most beautiful videos I have ever seen. I have watched it several times, I can't separate the music from the images now, they match so perfectly. So beautiful...thank you for creating it
Ain't that shivery chord at 2:25 just the perfect set-up for the major-blaster at 4:12? Fantastic piece. I know I'm going to get flack for this - but I wish the singers clipped their 'Ts" a little more so it didn't sound like they were singing 'liddle". If you like this, check out Gyorgy Ligeti's "Lux Aeterna", written around 1960: ten minutes of micro-tonal shifting as chord after elusive chord slips in then immediately out of the ear's grasp. Not as lyrical as this to be sure, very Modernist to a fault - and to the novice listener a little bit creepy - but one of the greatest pieces of 2Oth century choral music written.
Both the video and the musical piece was very mind blowing! This is one of my favorite songs from Depeche Mode, and I have to say it was very well done. :D
Thank you so much for this post. I can't believe it's taken me so long to find this. I heard the Eric Whitacre Singers perform this in Boston as an encore. It was he (!) who turned me on to the original Depeche Mode song. Now I am a huge fan of Depeche Mode and continue as a super fan of Eric Whitacre. Nothing better!!
Magnifique voix , peace of mind , écouter en silence et regarder la nature qui nous entoure , si ses voix pouvait transporter vers une paix pour l'humanité et le vivant . Merci , grazzie , manao ahoana, kiapora, namaste, ong diarama, bara mo, tashi Delek , mangadef, sanni bonani, chokrane, toda, tak, Gracias , epharisto, tanks you .
I guess Eric whitacre likes space themes. I like that. What an epic and majestic subject, combined with the imagery. Yesss, i hear the depeche mode track. I wasnt a fan. Sorry
I'm just a little choir geek who likes old music... this is what heaven is like
Eric Whitacre is probably one of the best modern day composers out there right now.
I don't understand how this guy managed to turn an electric rock song into this! Both are awesome songs, but feel completely different.
Chris Armenti Lol. At least we know that we both have good tastes in RUclips videos rite
Nuclear Trinity He did the same thing with Hurt from Trent Reznor. Pretty brilliant man.
This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen and heard. Stunning, eerie, breathtaking. God has made such an incredible universe, and the gift of music through which to experience and express it is glorious.
+Amber Austin Thanks, Amber, I appreciate it and I'm sure Mr. Whitacre does, too!
i think i have listened to 3:54 and 4:01 more times in the last year than i could ever count. The feeling it gives my heart is indescribable.
+Kaethe That's my favorite part, too!
That soprano is perfect

I don't think there's a more perfect way to represent this song in video form. Absolutely glorious. Well done, sir. Phenomenal.
This video fits the music perfectly! Incredible!

This is the best piece by Whitacre yet, and that's saying something. Truly beautiful. And the photos are amazing too :)
This is pretty amazing. I met Eric a few weeks back. He's a lovely human being.
I'm doing this song for choir, and I'm so excited! It's so eerie and somewhat dark and just absolutely beautiful 😍
Heard this live on Sunday and it was amazing.
Depeche Mode= loved in my teens and early 20's- still do. I love this re-make.
