@angus . Thanks! I just tried this with my 1987x and it really works! I can't believe after more than 30 years of playing live. and using an attenuator for small clubs I never knew about this or did it even occur to me! Holy crap I am going to pull out my 100w SLP and give this a try! It is as effective I am going to start playing shows with the 100w. And if I ever need massive volume boom I have it at my toe tips with a pedal. Thanks Angus!!!!
Hey Angus, mind hitting me with a link to your Box of Rock? Amazon or any other website works. Cheers mate! (If ya can't find one, just the name would be alright, confused whether it's a distortion or overdrive).
oMikey xx it’s an overdrive but its more of an “amp in a box” with a boost. So along the lines of a JHS Charlie Brown. Drive side has gain, tone, level, boost side just has level. Boost runs after the drive and is separate from the Drive side. So if you are running the amp loud you can use just the boost and it sounds amazing.
Angus I really like the effect of your Delay Box behind You. Could you tell me more about that box 'cause I would like to buy a good one and yours seem perfect for me. Thank You !!
ALAIN HARDY that, my friend, is a Strymon El Capistan, which is meant to emulate an old tape delay like an echoplex or a Roland Space Echo. It has the added effect of a spring reverb which you can mix in with the delay, and it has a master level adjustment so it can give the signal a bit of boost when you engage it (or cut to bring you back to unity if you’re using a doubling effect like slap back). They make great gear. www.strymon.net
Hey Angus, the Volume pots only work in tandem when you jump the channels. Can you clarify why/how you are using both volume I and II in your explanation when plugged into the low II channel only? Thanks for the video!
Hey Anthony. Its due to the wiring of the amp. This is the standard wiring on four input plexi-style amps. For some reason the high volume affects the amount of treble you get from the low volume input. If you look at the original “Plexi Is a Harsh Mistress” video I talk about it and someone explained it in a comment. The two channels affect each other.
I have owned my 73 for quite a while now and never really tinkered with the low end of channel 2 as it's teen virtually useless for the most part. Going to take your tip and give it a shot and see what type of tones I can get out of it. Will respond with my results. would you mind sharing your EQ and volume settings to dial in the tone?
I start everything at noon and go from there after getting something usable from mixing the volumes. I think you can start with volume II around 10 o’clock and then bring volume I up from zero til you hear the treble come back.
It's due to the shared cathode resistor and capacitor between both channels, causes the interaction. Some models had separated cathodes and so need to be jumpered to connect them.
Adam I think that whole line sounds pretty good and the vintage may be the best of the lot, with the 800 close behind. I haven’t tried them in person though. Cheers, A
Fandao19 I am probably going to get the new Fryette Power Station 2. The other ones I’ve tried or heard have not impressed me. The more high end ones that combine with an IR modeler like the OX are doing so much digital manipulation of the sound its like “why bother” - just use an Axe-Fx. But that’s just me.
Cheers for the reply mate, I’m looking at getting a 1987X is it possible too get sensible levels band wise without it being too extremely loud? Just worried as it doesn’t have a master volume. Cheers from Aus mate
Fandao19 that was the point of this video, when running the amp this way it’s not that loud. But yeah, you’re not using the amp in the legendary way so it doesn’t sound quite as good. You should look into the PS2, there’s also a new Boss unit that looks very cool.
he's called angus and looks like malcom
Great tips. Now I just need to get me a Plexi 😂. Thanks for posting.
Great tip and instructions Angus, thank you so much for sharing
bigbokiptd my pleasure, thanks for checking it out!
Great to see you Angus! Been following you forever! BX HS SCI 85
I have been playing gigs and using plexi's for 36 years... I just learned something new abou tthese amps! Thanks!!!
CRISPor glad I could help! It was a real eye opener for me as well! I never liked the attenuator route, I have THD hotplate being used as a door stop.
@@AngusClarkGTR Sell it on Reverb. I just sold mine within 30 minutes and I asked market price!
This helped tremendously! I also recommend using a path cable to blend both channels as this method is very popular for this model.
Very cool video, a guide for getting great sounds from Marshall. Thanks!
Dmitriy Semeshkin thanks!

Still sounds almost too bright even through the dark channel but I'm sure you can tame it down. Will have to try this. Thanks
Or you can just clip the bright cap and then the amp has a tonne of clean headroom and both channels are actually usable
Thank you! I consider myself a Plexi guy and I never knew that!
Well done and thanks for sharing brother!
Steven mGyori my pleasure, thanks for watching!
I've got the 1987X, and it took a bit of finagling to find a pleasant sounding clean tone. The bass channel is toned down quite a bit.

Hey! It’s a zvex Vexter “Box Of Rock” pedal zvex.com
Angus Clark Thanks! Is it Overdrive or Distortion? I’m guessing OD.

High treble loudness is very very loud at level 0.5; is my amp broken or is it normal? What to do?
the volume jumps before you get to 1, I demonstrate that it in the video.
Hey Angus, what are your thoughts on the new 20watt Marshall Plexi? It’s called the Studio Vintage! Thanks for any info!
Adam I think that whole line sounds pretty good and the vintage may be the best of the lot, with the 800 close behind. I haven’t tried them in person though. Cheers, A
Hey angus great vid! Does your plexi have an fx loop or are you using something else for an fx loop?
hey, if you watched the other vid about this amp I talk about the amp mods. It has a metro-loop by Metropoulos. Installed by Blackie Pagano.
GREAT WORK BRO CHEERS! What’s your thoughts on attenuators or do you crank it?
