I love how you cleared up the difference between dandruff and dry skin. I’ve had pretty bad dandruff for years and it’s a pet peeve of mine that everyone thinks they have dandruff in the winter. 😅 Also if anyone actually has severe dandruff, I do highly recommend talking to your doctor or finding a dermatologist to get prescription care. It made a HUGE difference for me after trying over the counter dandruff shampoos and remedies for over five years.
What if your scalp does both? My scalp/hair gets really oily but I still have a lot of flakiness on the areas surrounding my forehead :(
It could be under exfoliation around your hairline. Perhaps try to scrub / massage with your shampoo in that area. Typically oiliness and flakes are indicative of dandruff, but if it is only specific areas and the flakes are small it could just mean that you need to massage your scalp more to dislodge the flakes.
Kayley Melissa Great, I’ll try doing that then. Thank you so much!!!
Or it could just be really really dry & the natural oils try to control it by it self, by producing more oils? Same happens me every year & i use a baby shampoo for 2-3 weeks.... it helps me & i hope it so does you 😘 much love
Omg this is me EVERYDAY!! Thx kayley!
Dry scalp is when your scalp is dry, so I'm guessing you probably have dandruff
I needed this!! My scalp has been so dry and I’ve been wondering what I can do. Thank you for this.
I gotchu girl!! I've been struggling this fall / winter too!
Detanglers work too. Those have been my wonder medicine for a while.
Shampoo with a Detangler, get a hair mask and brush it in with the Detangler....works miracles and gets any kind of product everywhere.
6:29 For DRY SCALP! part of vid.... I slathered my itchy scalp this morning w/ coconut oil and tea tree. Feels so much better yet still dry. I think my condition is pretty bad.
Baking soda is basic and the scalp is usually at a pH of around 5..wouldn't using baking soda cause more pH unbalances and make the scalp worse..like making it drier over time. Using it every once in a while may be okay.. but personally I would not recommend using it
I'm so glad somebody else pointed this out! When people start bringing banking soda into DIY skin/hair care I start to panic.
@@Restillhabb-v2y Yes and I really hope people don't just follow this video but actually do their own research before. Baking soda is abrasive and it is often used as a cleaning agent around the household because it is a natural product. You wouldn't use something you clean around the house on your own skin/hair. These agents including baking soda are just too harsh for our skin/scalp
So is there any other substitutes you can use?
Imagine how it is for a brunette like me
It’s just me, Leena same it’s the worst.
Imagine how it is for a black haired gal like me
Sapphire Wang I’m gonna pray for you
It’s just me, Leena I have black hair
Ughh i hate it😂😂😂
I've been so worried lately. Kids at school said I have dandruff and I freaked out. But theres deffinately a difference between *actual* dandruff and what I now know was just a dry scalp. I've been so self conscious about it and I hate it because my grandma is a hairdresser and she ALWAYS has to make sure I have perfect hair and this has been so stressful 😫 Anyway, I'm glad you helped out :)
*goes on amazon and buys shampoo brush* omg how did I not know those existed. 😯 so excited to try!
Same!!!
Has it worked for you ?
Bee Nice yep it’s amazing I use it every shower I’ll never go back!
Madison Cleveland thank you:)
I’ve been LOVING mine, too. #gamechanger !!!
So the baking soda DIY... I love the idea of treating your scalp like your face, since they can both be fairly sensitive. Baking soda has an extremely high pH (around 9), and our facial skin has a pH around 5.5. It's recommended never to put baking soda on your face as it could disrupt your skin's natural pH and compromise your moisture barrier. My questions are 1) do you know what the pH of the scalp is, and does baking soda have the potential to compromise the scalp moisture barrier? And 2) how do you prevent baking soda from touching your forehead if you're washing your scalp with it?
I have neurodermitis and skin cancer which are leading to a dry and bloody scalp, even behind my ears! I‘m trying this for only a few days now and i think it‘s helping so thank you! 🥰
At the beginning of the video when you asked for suggestions the baking soda popped into my head immediately! I used it a lot when I was younger and it's a miracle worker!
Hey Kayley, I love your videos but have a question. I work most of my time, and my job requires me to wear a hairnet. Are you able to show me a way on how to make that look decent? Maybe a 'How to rock a hairnet' tutorial? That would be great! I love your channel and this would really help me not get in a slump.
A little late, but what about milkmaid braids or braid Mohawk? :)
...I'm painting my nails while watching this and now my scalp itches. Darn you! (I still love you though and this is a very important issue that I'm so glad you're addressing)
The start of the video was hard to listen to (icky) but I needed to hear it! Awesome informative video thank you! As a brunette I will definitely be trying these things out
I actually really appreciate you providing information on the difference between dandruff and dry scalp
Do you know kayley what have you done?
YOU JUST SAVE MY LIFE.
I have thick and dark hair, so flakes are very noticeable but oil isn't. I drown it in olive oil, cheap and awesome.
Still gonna try that shampoo brush tho.
try coconut oil instead it helped me so much
I like the explanations, don't worry about talking for too long. That's what this video is about.
me rewatching this 2 years later cause my scalp is freaking out and normally it’s fine but this vid is a lifesaverrrr ❤️
A video on the myths towards hair products or hair treatments would be interesting. Also a video on the differences between dandruff, dryness and oily.
Im so glad u talked about the shampoo scrubby brush thing cuz I was sooo pumped when I saw an ad for it on insta, looks so satisfying
I like adding essential oils that are good for hair and scalp into my shampoos. It has made a big difference in the way my scalp feels. I never thought about adding baking soda to shampoo and now I really want to try it. Thank you for this great video! Keep up the good work!
this was super helpful. I live in the humid country of Malaysia where it is summer all year round. this made me realise that it's possible to have been treating dandruff when it is actually dry scalp! even in our humid weather. thanks Kayley! love how you're always so genuine and rly looking to help others :)
I noticed, I particularly get flakes when I use a lot of dry shampoo. This weekend before I showered, I put a good amount of jojoba on my scalp, then I showered and conditioned as usual, and my hair is LOVING it! But my hair naturally doesn't produce oil, so disclaimer if you have an oily scalp it may not work. Im definitely going to try the baking soda in my shampoo. I've been dying to get the briogeo, but its SO expensive!
Jackie Arteaga I “oil” my hair all the time! I started with coconut oil and now mix my own various oils. Oh happy hair!
I wouldn't recommend the briogeo shampoo. I bought it because everyone raved about it but it didn't help with my flaky scalp at all. The mintiness felt nice but it isn't worth $40 imo
omg...i thought it was so weird how my scalp was only dry and flakey in the winter... i’m so glad i’m not the only one
Kayley! Hi! I am a big fan of your hairstyles/tutorials, though I only sometimes can do them. I really think that you're very talented. Please do a step-by-step hair-washing tutorial.
I remember that pre-wash conditioner tip from last year and girl that SAVED my hair. My scalp didnt itch, didnt flake, and my hair was so much softer and less static-y all winter! I used Aussie's deep conditioner as my pre-conditioner and then just my normal shampoo and conditioner like once a week and girl it WORKED! Thanks Kayley!
Love your tips and tricks!! Living in the Midwest My hair goes crazy in the winter! I use a lot of coconut oil but I’ve recently discovered Argan oil! It’s less heavy than coconut and my hair doesn’t go all staticky!
My most recent trick lately has been, after shower, to run another quarter size amount of conditioner from mid shaft to my ends and scrunch it in. And twisting it up in a t shirt has especially helped!
Also loved your idea of the scalp massage!!❤️❤️
thaaaank you for real info on this huge platform of turning opinions into facts
This is actually one of the best videos to answer all my issues!!! thank you so MUCH
I had dry flaky skin on my scalp and I knew it wasn't dandruff, but I couldn't fix it. I finally decided to go on amazon and get a scalp shampoo and give it a try. First time I used it, I had no flakes at all. It was amazing! And such an easy fix, that I didn't think to try.
I would recommend those to everyone!
watching this 4-years after 😊, exactly what I am looking for! winter dry scalp is really irritating
Just what we all needed! 🙌🏻 Preach!
Can you make a video about protective hairstyles? For winter and in general🙏🏻🌸
Much needed. Thank u kayley for this video and once again congratulation for you shower cap and kit launch 😍
I started scratching as soon as I saw the title! 😂
Fresh aloe vera is amazing!! I have dermatitis on my scalp, I put aloe vera for 20 min before going in the shower, and use a sulfate free shampoo, works every time!!, love from México!!
This video was serious SO helpful. I have wanted to by the scalp detox for awhile but just haven’t had the funds. Yesterday, I tried the baking soda in shampoo (probably equal parts) and OH MY GOODNESS! I can’t believe I’ve been walking around with product build up and an itchy scalp for so long (like literally months)
Thank you Kayley!!!!
KAYLEY I just ordered so many products last week for my winter scalp issue!! I got some of the Korean scalp swabs, scalp tonic, and a scalp massager. I can’t wait to use my massager with my briogeo exfoliating shampoo 🤤
The timing of this video is perfect! I needed this!
Shampoo and baking soda is MY LIFE. That mixture saved me from so many flakes :)
I've been curious about those shampoo brushes because I've seen it constantly advertised on my Instagram, but you now convinced me that I'm in desperate need of one 😂
Great topic and very well addressed! My scalp has been driving me up the wall lately and I didn't know what to do. I looked on google and tried the baking soda past thing yesterday. Baking soda, water and olive oil (just a titch) and put it on my scalp and let it sit for half an hour or so and then washed. Relief! Mind you 24 hours later it's itchy again but not as bad. Next time I do it I will skip the olive oil because my thin, fine hair became even limper than usual. Great distinction between "real" dandruff and dry scalp. I'd been using Nizoral (and do like it!) but I realise I don't actually have dandruff. Anyway.......thanks! XO
So well needed! It now makes me think that certain people in my life may just have dry scalp and not dandruff
I just watch a whole video about winter and my country don't even have seasons...its just sun and less sun, rain and less rain. But I watched just because I love your videos!
I always, ALWAYS, love your videos of hairstyles based on movies and actors. So whenever you wanna bless us with another one, I’m here for it. 🙌 also, this video is perfectly timed, thank you!
Dandruff should also not be confused with some types of dermatitis which can be either fungal or caused by many other factors. My dermatitis is stress related. The scalp itches, flakes off and scabs over, which can be very painful. Coconut oil and over the counter shampoos work really well, thankfully.
L’Oréal makes a good one for anyone looking for a drugstore option too. It comes in a white tub with a blue lid from their Ever Pure line I believe.
That sweater looks so cozy!!
This was so helpful. I never knew the difference between dandruff and a dry scalp. Thank you!
Wurly and curly girls often wash their scalp with conditioner (me too). Although there is one very important rule. Try to use for the scalp a conditioner without silicone (dimethicone). It builds on your scalp and can make itching and dryness worst 😝 Kayley nice film😘 I bet a lot of girls have this issue. I understood it quite recently , exfoliation is my friend now 😄 Love! ❤
Take my money and give me all of this 🤩 dry scalp sucks! Needed this 🙌🏻
I wish you had also spoke to psoriasis as it also causes flakes but its different from dandruff and can be really problematic
She probably just isn't familiar with it, most people think of psoriasis on people body not their scalp but very true, would've been helpful
And here I am, always complaining of an oily scalp and frizz in the winter because of all the hats 😂
Great tips though! I have to get myself a shower brush, I've been using a tangle teezer for that for ages but it's been ripping my hair out so it's great to know there's a way to avoid it 😊
Kayley love you to death!!! I love all the products you test and your thoughts on hair care! I love that you are a hair stylist! I wish more hair stylist out there that would get on and give safe, broad advice. I'm so thankful for you. So much love.
I was literally wondering if there was a KM video on this when I scrolled down and there it was. It's like the youtube algorithm saw my soul for a second.
Dont have any flakyness but the itching is driving me mad!! Can feel that my scalp is very dry but I still have to wash it as often as usual. Thanks for the tips!
such great tips and I don’t even feel like you’re trying to sell me anything 😻
Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally someone explained this in "English". Will definitely try the DIY baking soda trick.
Looooove that you gave a DIY option. Pleaseeeee give more of those. ❤
I just got called dandruff girl bc of my dry scalp I NEED HELP 😂
mabelll that’s so sad I’m so sorry you’re being called that:( 💕
Do the shampoo brushes cause oily hair because they cause the glands to stimulate... or is that not true? Just wanna check if I'm gonna buy one....
I like using aloe /aloe gel in my hair if it’s been itchy, ( I use the baking soda / shampoo scrub once or twice a month and that does help.) but I find if I massage some aloe gel in to my wet scalp, and through my hair it helps with that dry feeling as well, soothes and it seems to help my pro long the moisture of my roots/ scalp ( using pure aloe gel I’ve found is best. ) love all your tips.
i’m so excited to try all these out thank you thank you for sharing!!!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
It's always a good day when you post. ❤😘
I have like 3C/4A hair, and I find that I use moisturizer maybe.... twice a week. When I shower I also wet my scalp/hair and use my shampoo scrubber (which is nice and gentle) and I saw and feel a MAJOR difference. My scalp is nice and moisturized and itching less and less. So I shampoo once a week and I love it. Thanks.
Yeah so I have highlights ( haven’t got them done in almost 6 months cuz covid but am getting them redone finally in 2 weeks) ... but my scalp is always dry . I buy expensive shampoos and conditioners thinking it would help. Thanks for your tips ! I always thought I had dandruff but after research tonight I don’t ! I have dry scalp. My flakes aren’t even slightly oily. They don’t get on my shirt or anything and aren’t itchy either except maybe in winter . This is an all year problem for me . I tried washing my hair less thinking that’s why my scalp dries out so quick but it doesn’t work . I will try your tips and see what happens . Hopefully it works ! It’s not noticeable to other people but to me I can mess around and part my scalp and if I pick with a comb little tiny flakes come off . Not big ones or oily ones just like tiny white flakes . My hair is also super dry always has been even before I got highlights . I’ll let ya know if this works !!!! I don’t like having my head this way ! It’s not my whole head either the bottom half is good it’s just where my part is and about 2 inches each side of my part where the dryness is . Maybe I’m not conditioning right ???
Great tips for the scalp .and a great topic chosen for winters. thanks for sharing Stay blessed!😍
I’d really like to see some more natural curly hair videos!!
I now know why I get dandruff!!! I always switch between my shampoos, conditioners and even body wash, it really helps!!!!
I've just been thinking I have dandruff! This was perfectly timed for me - I literally googled "how to stop dandruff" on my work computer this morning because I had a cloud of flakes fall down and I'd just taken a shower!
Great tips!! Apple cider vinegar rinse has been my go-to for getting rid of itchiness and dryness. I do it once a week and now only have to do it once every two weeks. I love the one from dphue. It stinks but so worth it!
I bought you kit and got to try the clip the first night and shower cap....I ❤️ it!!!
Thank you for making this! I've been looking for good remedies for this for a while to help my poor head. Watching this while wearing your head towel
Klorane SOS peony serum is good. It’s literally like water and you wonder how the hell it is going to moisturize and stop the itching but it truly does. It doesn’t mess the hair up either. Another tip that might be controversial 🙄is conditioner on your scalp. Good natural ingredients with no silicones added conditioner. It works wonders. I haven’t experienced any negative effects. If you have dry hair and scalp that is. Thank you.
I’m so excited I literally just bought the shampoo brush, and briogeo shampoo and oil as I’ve had dry flaky scalp my whole life and went back to fashion color purple hair and want to get back to only shampooing my hair once a month
When you have to pause the video like 4 times to go build your Amazon cart.. Thank you Kayley for always solving our hair problems 💚💚
thank you I AM DIABETIC and have itchy scalp. thank you for your information, my hair is long and I am 76 years old, been using Head and Shoulders complete but still have itchy scalp. I have tried coconut oil bed time soak, did not help any other sugestions??
I have a dandruff scalp but what helped Nioxin shampoo, conditioner, and scalp treatment works miracle for mine and prevent it from happening 🙌🏻
Love this. So helpful. Do you have any tips for people who struggle with eczema when the weather gets colder?
Very helpful! I need to get a shampoo brush! (And btw. Kayley your makeup always looks soo stunning! *-*)
I'm stocking up on information because i don't get dry scalp that easily. So i'm stocking up for my friends!
I needed this video so badly! Thank you for the tips
I am just getting into the three-day routine and I wondered if you take a break and leave your hair natural at all. Would taking a break from heat styling be a good idea for itchy, flaky scalp or for the benefit the hair?
non-SLS shampoos are probably one of the best things to try. Sulfates are suuuuper drying!
Omg you feel me! I’m with you!! 🙌🏻 I had itchy scalp since the cold winter weather started and your video just comes at the right time, because it REALLY sucks!! Love you!!
Ok girl thanks! But imma need specific shampoo recomendations for my dry ass scalp PLEASE 😣😣
I want a makeup tutorial on the look you havie on today! Lovin it!
Thank you! I’m from Maryland and I need this to make my hair doesn’t go astray.
Could you do a make-up tutorial on this look? Your eyeshadow is stunning!
First time here, awesome and informative video! 😮
If you want an alternative for cold water and don't mind it, I recommend warm water mixed with honey. It's a sweet but warm drink that won't dehydrate you. There are also teas you can drink such as red tea which will help.
Omg!! 🤤
Having a little psoriasis at my head, it really helps me to put in oil (checking the ingriedients) a few hours before i wash, then using a shampoo for sensitive skin. That doesn't give me that much volume, but my scalp feels relaxed and not that dry.
Can you please tell me which shampoo you use please
If i shampoo my hair normally would it help or do i need a specific thing? Also is there any danger in dandroff or flakingness? PLEASE I NEED ANSWERS
Great tips as always Kayley! I too would love to see a video on tips for oily hair. I usually have to dry shampoo my hair even just a few hours after washing and definitely everyday between washes. Side note: getting your new Kitsch collaboration for Christmas. Can't wait! 😊❤️
If you're taking requests....fragrance-free/scent-free and also scent-free hypo-allergenic styling products would be super helpful, I never see them and can't find any except on Amazon and have no idea if they're good. Husband and I have severe allergies.
It's as if you read my my mind in the second you uploaded that video🙊 thaaaanks for all these helpful tips🙏
THANK YOU. I was starting to think I had Lise
It's the first time that I have this problem!! thankss for your help!!
This was ridiculously informative, thank you! 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Also, I put sugar in my face wash to exfoliate. I'm sure it'd work great in shampoo too.
