A worker on the game actually said they changed it to "XL" for America because they thought those silly Americans would ask what happened to the other 2096 games.
Well, back in the day I was pretty confused about maro 64 being the 64th game. But then again, if you don't know about N64, 64 is a pretty random number.
I have heard it's because Americans wouldn't understand the concept that a video game is set in a future year. Like "the future" is fine but "exactly 100 years from this year which you are in right now" would be too much to handle.
I think the linked console multiplayer might have been a result of technical limitations with the original PS1 hardware where having split screen would've caused massive frame rate drops. After all, this game's graphics and physics engines were pretty spectacular back in the day... Then again, I'm sure the PS1 could've pulled it off if they had just created an add-on that feeds Red Bull directly into the console.
Wipeout 3 managed to do it, but the developers had to be very clever about how they made the tracks less resource intensive. For instance, the split screen tracks are all set at night (no need for a skybox now!) and have various pieces of scenery removed throughout the layout.
WipEout. My favourite PS1 game franchise, barely in front of Oddworld. Thank you so much for reviewing this. I couldn't stop smiling when you talked about the satisfaction of scraping a wall and deliberately trying to do so because it's something I did as well.
Loved this game. Perfect floaty controls, much better than later games! Also, using the NegCon felt so intuitive. I wouldn't have been able to finish the challenges (I and II) without it.
I had Wipeout 64 as a kid, which i think is probably the most under-rated game in the series. It's basically combines the tracks from Wipeout 1 with the gameplay and aesthetic from 2097, which it's actually a direct sequel to.
Wipeout 3 Special Edition is my favourite, including the best tracks from the previous 2 games as well as the excellent visuals from the new title. Wipeout on the N64 is interesting as well, with tracks not seen anywhere else.
I loved playing the N64 version. It was always a great challenge for me trying to unlock the extra content as well as trying to place first in phantom class.

I still remember those circuits from almost 20 years ago. First game i had for ps1 and have played every single wipeout game there is. Best racing games imo
Reasons I loved wipeout series, the artwork, the logo designs, the futuristic feel. It felt deep and rich even though it was just closed circuits. Kinda wish Netflix could do a miniseries that focused on the politics of the teams starting off in the future and these amazing tracks showcasing future technology. Could do an altered carbon style production with that hopeful futuristic design featuring the original artists scoring the soundtrack.
I miss this game so much!! D'8 this is the only racing game I ever owned as a kid simply due to availability and I KILLED it at this game! I've never played the original Wipeout, but Wipeout 2097 was one of my first ever Playstation games, along with Crash Bandicoot and Rayman. I always set the music to Prodigy's Firestarter, and I LOVED that announcer voice- there's just something about that "CONTENDER ELIMINATED" that is just both slightly creepy and yet satisfying at the same time!
Aww man! Wipeout 2097 I think was one of the first Playstation games I've ever played. Even though I didn't go far, it was still a nice game to play. Thank you Caddicarus for bringing the nostalgia to us.
Why should "summer" universally indicate "outdoors"? It's easier to protect you from the heat inside where there are shadows than outside in the sun. Even fans work better if they only have to cool down a single room instead of aaall the air outside around you. And did you know that long clothing protects better from the sun than no or scanty clothing? Don't get me wrong, I like the sun (and scanty clothes) as much as everyone else... but I absolutely despise the summer heat.
