I really should re-do this video this season. I've got a couple more seasons under my belt and have gotten a bit better at talking on camera. Thanks for watching.
It's been a really tough season so far. Challenging conditions. Only 3 fish have been weighed in to the Wally Hall derby. Last year the tally on the same day was at 21! That's the efforts of roughly 300 steelheaders for the last 3 weeks! If you consider that each person in the derby only went out twice during that time, that's 600 days of fishing for 3 hatchery fish. I'm sure a few wilds were caught too, but still those are some slim odds.
@@petrhermanadventures9509 do you think the angler numbers are down though in the last 2 weeks given the weather conditions compared to last season at this time.
@@Beacon_Offroad It's hard to tell. I fished more this year than last in late December and there were a lot of people on the upper above the slide doing the same. On the lower, there seem to be fewer people than usual.

resident under 16 one does not need a stamp to fish for or retain steelhead. Under 16 non resident needs to be accompanied by an adult with a license and tag and their quota goes on their license. If a non resident under 16 wants their own limit, then they need to buy license and stamp.
Thank you so much for this video, so informative and helpful. One question - you mentioned that you need a steelhead stamp to fish the Vedder no matter if you aren't catching one, is this true? I thought you only needed an additional stamp for fish the you intend to keep? I'm only asking because I fish the river often on the fly to catch trout and I was always under the impression I only needed my fresh water license! Thank you.
Here is a quote from page 7 of the synopsis: "Your basic licence must be validated with a Conservation Surcharge Stamp if you fish for steelhead anywhere in B.C. (whether you keep or release your catch)." So if you get checked by a CO, you have to conclusively prove that you were not fishing for steelhead. That's possible if you're say using 4 pound leader, but I did not want any of my viewers to get into that grey area. You do not need a stamp to fish for salmon if you are not retaining any and that's where the confusion sets in for many people.
Petr great video as always. However I wonder if one of the things you said is true. I don't think you need a conservation stamp to fish the Vedder if you aren't going to be fishing for steelhead (perhaps right now that's all it has -- i'm new to this so I don't know). The guide says: "In addition, a steelhead stamp is mandatory when fishing on most Classified Waters during certain specified periods, even when fishing for species other than steelhead. Refer to the regional tables for dates and exceptions." The Chilliwack/Vedder is not a classified water. I don't think region 2 has any classified waters. If you look up a river in region 1 for example it will say: "DATLAMEN CREEKΣ Π 6-13 Class II water Sept 1-Apr 30; Steelhead Stamp mandatory Dec 1-Apr 30" The mandatory stamp is listed explicitly. Notice that it doesn't say that under any of the region 1 rivers including the Vedder. Of course it's nice to support the conservation effort -- but it sounds like you can try to catch other types of trout in lower mainland rivers without the steelhead stamp.
You need a conservation stamp to fish for steelhead, regardless of whether you intend to retain one or not. For salmon you only need a tag to retain, not for c&r. So technically you are correct, but you had better be prepared to prove to a CO that you were not targeting Steelhead. That would generally require you to be using a small rod with 6lb or lighter line. I did not want to launch into a big discussion on this detail in an already long video.
@@petrhermanadventures9509 What 604jz was asking if you need to purchase the steelhead conservation surcharge if you are not targeting steelhead between December and April. 🙂 The short answer is no. If you are targeting whitefish, rainbow trout with a light spinning rod or fly rod, you do not need it as you are not fishing for steelhead. With that said, conservation and fishery officers will use their judgement to determine whether you are in fact targeting steelhead or not. If you are fishing for bull trout with a heavier rod with bait, jigs, spoons or spinners, then my recommendation is to purchase it as the gear used is too similar to what you’d use for steelhead. Also, revenues from the conservation surcharges are used to fund research projects, conservation initiatives and even infrastructures like new docks for anglers, so it’s a good investment.
I was wondering if you paid for the conservation stamp but forgot to print out an updated version of your license, will the fisheries officer ticket you and take your gear? Or can he/she look up your license information to confirm you have paid for the conservation surcharge?
I don't know the answer to that one. They might write the ticket and give you the opportunity to come by their office with proof that you had purchased the tag earlier. Best not take chances, you can always stop by a tackle store and get them to re-print your license.
I've wondered that too, as there are a few times I forgot my paper license at home when I went fishing. I have my angler number saved in the contacts of my phone so I'd have something to give the CO but wonder if you'd get more than a warning (so long as the license you forgot at home was valid with all applicable stamps).
I might be wrong but I think you need to have the actual printed licensed as you need to record your catch , wild or hatch.. Again I might be wrong but would love to hear from others.

I am responding because your opinion is not unique. I am curious if you actually watched the video or just don't like the title. I ask because of the hundreds of videos about fishing the Vedder already out there, mine is one of just a couple that mention proper etiquette and fish handling. Would you rather somebody new show up to the river and low hole you or drag their fish up on the beach? As for posting fishing videos in general, the Vedder has been featured on virtually every fishing show in Canada, many magazines, and hundreds of videos. I think the cat's out of the bag there. It's more crowded than it used to be because it's a great river within easy driving distance of 2 million people. Do you really think that someone will randomly come across my video and decide to try the Vedder because of it?

@@petrhermanadventures9509 no that’s all I needed to know. Thank you
I'd suggest putting some more wear on your felts before handing out tips for steelhead.
I hope you agree that I'm not pretending to be something I'm not. I was very up front with my level of experience. Thanks for the feedback. If you're interested in sharing some tips, I'd be happy to film an interview and put it up on my channel.
Nice video, lots of inf but little bit too long in my opinion...
Yes, I agree. Even so I missed a lot of points that I wanted to cover. Perhaps in the future I'll stick to smaller topics.
I’d be happy if you stopped acting like a rookie and teaching people how to fish the already crowded river ...unbelievable
You are entitled to your opinion, you are not however entitled to call me names. If you disrespect me again, it's literally one click to ban you from commenting on my channel.
