This song is so ironicly played in strip clubs. It is about a person at the bottom of their depression spiral looking to feel anything at all at the expense of their lover. It is about one sided selfish sexual exploitation to give meaning to their own existence. Listen more closely to those lyrics within that context and you will see just how dark this really is.

@Brian Cairns Wikipedia isnt always 100% but according to the early history of the band listed there.... Reznor was unable to find a band that could articulate the material as he desired, so (inspired by Prince) he played all the instruments except drums himself. He has continued to play most parts on Nine Inch Nails recordings ever since.

I have a feeling you'll really enjoy diving into NIN's material. Trent Reznor is definitely a creative genius in his own right. Until recently, almost all of the arrangements were written by him. NIN was only really a full band while touring, with different members switching out from time to time.
As for Closer, the song is surprisingly deeper than how it sounds on the surface when it's taken in context of the whole album. It's one way that self-destructive behavior manifests while on the downward spiral. Hurt being the closing song of the album is super powerful, as it ends in regret of the terrible choice that was ultimately made: "If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself, I would find a way".

Written by him and recorded by him using multiple tracks. The band only got together (to practice, I should think.) to go on tour. Trent couldn't very well play all the instruments at once. That's the story I've always heard since I became a follower in '94. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Hell yeah!! Finally! Welcome to NIN. There are so many ways to go. There is harder stuff, slower stuff and weirder (if you are not used to NIN’s sound) stuff. It’s basically Trent Reznor who does it all. He is still going strong and has added Atticus Ross as an official member of NIN. Check out songs below:
    1. Head like Hole
    2.Wish
    3. Hurt (Which Johnny Cash covered. Still prefer NIN’s version)
    4. Down in It
    5. Something I can never have (still version)

Fun fact: Trent Reznor rented a home at 10050 Cielo Dr. In Los Angeles. The home of Sharon Tate and the site of the infamous Charles Manson murders of her and 4 people there. He converted the house to a studio to specifically record this album "The Downward Spiral". Sharon's sister lashed out at him for attempting to capitalize on her murder. He assured her that wasn't the case but ended up moving out .. removing the front door that originally had the word PIG written in Sharon's blood on it. He took it to New Orleans where it was installed at a recording studio.

As an extra bonus I think you might like "Happiness In Slavery" too off their Broken EP. And if you're wondering why the song just ends abruptly, it's because Trent Reznor was a master at doing that on early NIN records. If you listen to this on the full Downward Spiral album as soon as that last note hits it goes right into the next song "Ruiner" as if it was one continuous song.

My personal all time favorite NIN track. The opening riff is just a punch in the face and Trent's vocals are as aggressive as it gets.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross do film scores too now, they just did Bird Box and Trent won an Oscar for Social Network soundtrack!

Reznor also did the soundtrack of Quake, one of the most influential and iconic video games in existence. It's a bit of a stretch to call most of it 'music' though, since it's more like an ambient soundtrack, creating a scary, disturbing, and downright oppressive atmosphere.

NaHCO3 I wouldn’t say it was a stretch. I’m actually a film composer and most modern scores are very heavy on the sound design elements.

Aside from possibly being the most improbable radio hit of all time, what I love about "Closer" is how it takes such a simple beat and builds on it... and builds on it... and builds on it until the very end when it's all stripped away. With the exception of a couple of the bridges in the song, the beat is there, constantly, providing a foundation and driving it ever onward. People might get caught up by the chorus lyrics, but it's a song with a surprising amount of depth to it.
