I was somewhere between middle school and high school in the 90s, and just fell in love with !Cube's particular sound, first through the Gateways demo, and then this. Absolute beast of a track!
I miss going to GOA and psy shows. Even after I got sober I was afraid I couldn't club anymore, and most of the time that is true I can't go back in those places it gives me cold sweats, but trance shows....Do places like that still exist or did the pandemic stop all that? I dunno anymore, certainly stopped me....But yeah man nothing better than listening to some good trance on good speakers with some good people.
This sounds a lot better than a lot of music produced and released in 2023 with DAWs that are so advanced that you can literally make anything that you can imagine.
It's because daws have too many options and there are really no limitations besides your cpu usage. The limitations of the 90s computer hardware and software made people more creative because they had to think outside of the box to create the things they wanted to. Hell, even making chords was difficult in the early 90s because samples were monophonic iirc.

Heh! Brings back some sweet memories of the first time I ever started making music. It was with some old tracker that had vst support and a red background. I had no idea what I was doing back then. What a blast from the fucking past this is.
There's an Open Cubic Player out there. I found it in the Linux Mint Software Manager. It supports S3M files with Adlib instruments, but it unfortunately doesn't support hybrid files with both samples and FM (few programs do). It does support a variety of other Adlib formats (with very hit-and-miss compatibility), though. Some files are just horribly borked. Duke Nukem II's music amusingly plays at about double speed, though otherwise sounds correct.

One could easily mistake this banger trackertune as something to be beaten in high-to-insane difficulty in modern rhythmic games such as notITG, etc....
I like how nobody mentions the clarity of the samples used in this track, it's insane how clear they are!
It's a 748KB XM that isn't 10 minutes long. That sample/length ratio provides no excuse :P
16-bit samples are still very clear lol
@@BananaPhoPhilly Yeah but most of the time they're pretty crusty
Yeah, this song sounds very clean

There are still some amazing tunes coming out of the Demoscene, but yes, I think we all miss the good old days of the Demo Scene in the 80's and 90's.

...heated unreal tournament match-
Damn, you're right. Use this as music for your custom UT map, and nobody would bat an eye. It'd fit in seamlessly with the official soundtrack.
Original OST was made in ImpulseTracker if I'm not mistaken, could be he's using the samples from the songs, they are indeed very similar.
I was thinking this too.
UT99 and Deus Ex 1 best osts ever.
