  • As a young boy, Pur Biel ran for his life to escape the war in South Sudan. He found safety and love in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. But this would not be his last run. He and other refugees from Kakuma qualified for the first ever Refugee Olympic Team and this time, he ran, not for safety, but for glory. (Recorded at TEDxKakumaCamp on June 9, 2018) Pur Biel fled to Kenya at age nine and grew up in Kakuma camp. He competed at the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janiero, as a member of the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team, running in the 800-meter event. His inspiring story illustrates the resilience, talent and determination of refugees. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you Mr. Biel for being an inspiration. I have been facing my own struggle recently and have been having trouble giving meaning to my own training and life, and your talk has helped me see it in a new perspective. I'm not sure if you will ever see this, but thank you. I hope to watch you compete at the 2020 Olympics, and who knows, maybe I will even see you there.
