- Modifieds run the "Dog Leg" for the last time. If you were there, you'll enjoy the sights. If you weren't there, enjoy watching the history of our sport unfold at the long ago closed internationally known speedway.
Thanks for posting. I saw Trenton was shown on the Janet Guthrie 30 for 30 last night.
I raced an Kurtis-Offy midget there back in the 70's. Won one of the heats, that was one looong front straight. I was told we were doing 140 down the front stretch...crazy. You couldn't see where the track went going in to the dogleg... it was an uphill and then down that made it interesting. Fun times.
Welcome to the MoonRacer1 Network Gary, glad you've enjoyed our little corner of the world.
Love this old stuff.
I was there as well....Bodine won the rain shortened race. I think it was scheduled for 150 laps and it only went 80 laps. We went to Islip the night before. They were my only visits to both tracks.
I was there!
I was there for this race, it was hard to leave.
I work at UPS that is there now lol I been working there since 2000.
40+ unmuffled big blocks.
Did it close because it was too big?
I was there, it enned when the rain moved in and shortened the race.
it is now grounds of sculpture, the lake is still there, what a shame.
This was 1980.
My job UPS opened up on that site in 1989. When was the track demolished?

I was one of the announcers that day (1981) . . . so sad . . .
I was there. If I remember correctly Jamie Tomaino knocked out a part of the Turn 1 wall during qualifying. This delayed the race long enough for the rain to move in and force it to be shortened from it's scheduled 134 laps.
Sean McDonald whoa, that is awesome. Thanks. Love racing history, btw was Richie Evans in that one?
Bret Riley Richie won this race. Bugsy Stevens had him beat and ran out of gas with two laps to go.
Sean McDonald I didn't think Jamie was in the modifieds regularly until the mid 80s. That's a scary and cool story.
Brenden Pavao Actually Geoff Bodine won the race, Richie finished second. Thought I had remembered things incorrectly but have verified it through two websites here's a link with the full finishing order: www.thethirdturn.com/wiki/1980_Dog_Leg_200
Sean McDonald Thanks for that, man. I've always gone off Bugsy's firsthand account of the story, or at least what he thought he remembered. He's lost a little bit of sharpness with his old age, but he's still a real character. I've been lucky enough to grow up around him. He raced for years with my uncles and grandfather at Seekonk Speedway, Norwood Arena and lots of other tracks in the northeast. Bugs still hangs at Seekonk pretty often in the summer and he's always up for a good conversation about the better days of racing.
whats at the former site of the track now?

Oh gawd... this is the reason I wasn't a race fan for so long - the coverage was horrific. It's amazing it ever held on long enough for technology to get the camera footage to tolerable quality.
Some history is better than no history.
Where did Richie finish?
