    Drop Tuning seems to be the norm in metal music these days and if you’re just starting out, you may run into some problems if you’re not familiar with string gauge.
    Hopefully this video will help illustrate the need for Drop Tuning Strings and send you in the right direction. And one last thing, “Tension”.

    Question: if my non baritone guitar has thicker guage that does mean i have to change to a larger nut or something?
    Im planning to learn psychosocial solo but its in drop a. I dont have any baritone 🙂 (😔)

      Thanks! We appreciate that. We’re just starting so we’ve only got around 200 right now but we’ll get there! We’ve got a new series of videos come at the end of this month too.
      Depending on the thickness of the gauge, yes you’ll usually have to either widen the nut using fret/nut files or replace the nut. If you take it to a tech it shouldn’t be too much. If you do modify/replace the nut, just realize you may not be able to go back to smaller gauge strings.
      If you don’t, it can still work but you may have some tuning instability caused by the strings getting caught at the nut. You’ll also have to adjust the intonation a bit.
      Hopefully that helps! Let us know if you have anymore questions.

    I always use the high voltage dimebag DR strings , I don't know if there any different from regular DR strings but it has dime on the front so makes me feel like they play better lol . I wish elixir would come out with a heavy metal style string because I played nothing but elixirs for 20 years on my acoustic I've had them last a year before and still sound good . I've had the DR how old is dime strings on my custom dime Dean for about a month now and I'm always tuning down to C or B then when I get bored of it I'll turn it back up to standard and I haven't had a string break on me yet it's definitely time to change them but I'm just impressed with how long they've lasted I've only had results like that out of elixirs

    • @DawnofExistence
      @DawnofExistence  Год назад +1

      I haven’t tried the Dimebag strings but it definitely seems like DR strings last a very long time. I’m not sure if I’ve ever used Elixirs but we are very happy with every set of DR string a we’ve used.

    So you really mean 'down tuning' of the standard tuning for 6 string guitars, whether dropped or not.

    • @DawnofExistence
      @DawnofExistence  3 года назад +6

      Yeah, this mainly pertains to lower “standard” tunings; with drop tunings it would really only be a single string that would need a larger gauge.

      @@DawnofExistence what string gauges do you guys recommend for a 5 string bass in drop C#?

    • @DawnofExistence
      @DawnofExistence  3 года назад +1

      @@00Dusty What is your tuning? I’ve seen several different C/C#/Drop C# tunings on 5 string. Depending on your current gauge, you may not need to adjust the gauge but will need to adjust your intonation.
      For what it’s worth, I had two different C tunings in my previous band that included tuning down to G-C-F-A#(Bb)-D#(Eb) with I think 140-55’s which feel huge, and one tuning UP to C-F-A#(Bb)-D#(Eb)-G#(Ab) with 125-45’s (which was a bit tight). Those would also work in C# or even drop C#.
      For Drop Tunings, I’ve seen a few different things. For Drop C#, some players won’t drop at all because they have the C# on their low B already and play adjusted.
      Other players will only drop their 4th string/E string to C# so they end up with a weird tuning of B-C#-A-D-G, which I personally hate playing but works easily if you’re not using the Low B much. One really cool tuning is C#-C#-A-D-G, this way with the right gauge you can actually get a huge Bass Drop when needed.
      Hopefully this helps to make your tuning decision because it kind of hurt my brain thinking of the tunings hahaha. Let me know what tuning you’ll be using and I can help recommend a string gauge!

      @@DawnofExistence hey and thank for the reply 🤘🏻 I’ll be tunning to G# C# G# C# F# and at the moment I just have the standard 130-45 and the low G# and C# and horribly lose 😖 I was wondering about a 160 for the G# and a 125 for the C#

    • @DawnofExistence
      @DawnofExistence  3 года назад +1

      125 will probably work for the C# but 160 maybe too big for the G#? Also, a gauge that large will require some modification to the nut so I normally suggest people start out smaller because you can always enlarge a nut but you can’t add material back. I think I’d try something around a 145-150 first honestly,
      I’ve seen some people take a 5 string set (say your 130-45) and just move every string up, ditch the 45, and add the 140-150.

    Would these work on mikro or minion scale guitars to keep the tension up and bring the shrillness down for standard tuning?

    • @DawnofExistence
      @DawnofExistence  2 года назад

      These will give you too much tension. Since shorter scale guitars need less tension to tune them, you’d need something smaller gauge than these. I’m not positive, but you should be able to find large gauge strings designed for short scale guitars.

      @@DawnofExistence Sorry! I should talk… Didn’t mean to be disrespectful. I wanted to know about string gauge for drop D standard on a LP. I think I have 11’s on it but not sure. I have a pack of 11 to 70 (Zakk Wylde stuff) but that low E scares me! Any suggestions?

    • @DawnofExistence
      @DawnofExistence  2 года назад

      No worries, no disrespect taken at all.
      The largest gauge I would use for D standard would probably be 11-60 but that will still be very tight. I know a lot of people, including myself, that will play 11-52 all the way down to C standard before going up a gauge.
      As for the low E, yeah it can definitely be a little scary. If you go too large you’ll have to file the nut and if you file it, there’s no going back to smaller gauge strings. Hopefully that helps but let me know!
