    I played a Talisman Warlock with the Genie patron recently, and we mildly homebrewed her bottle as being the Talisman which made for a fun interaction.

    • @JaelinBezel

      I just started playing a genie Talisman warlock. Her talisman is a cheap piece of wood on a cord with a symbol carved into it that she’s had for as long as she can remember. She hopes it will one day lead her to a reunion with her birth parents (who sold her into slavery as a toddler for drug money but she doesn’t know that, she believes she was kidnapped). So as you can imagine, you have to solidly earn her respect before she’d consider loaning it to you but out of character, I am all about using it to support allies.

    I'm chocked by the quality of your narration and I'm very glad that RUclips recommended me this video. With that said, a little detail that I would like to mention is that the common use of the Guidance cantrip is for situations when you can predict an ability check, so, when you are under no pressure, usually during the roleplaying part, you can cast it before the ability check and it works perfectly. However, under pressure, usually during a combat, to be able to spend a reaction after the ability check, instead of an action and concentration before it, is way better. I'm not saying the basic benefit of this pact is good, au contraire, but I would like just to point out that it doesn't work exactly like the Guidance cantrip.

    I had 2 big takeaways from this video that I had not considered before.
    1. I wrote off the 1d4 bonus as a less useful guidance, since guidance is infinite, but hadn't considered the possibility of stacking the 2 effects to really bolster someone's checks.
    2. I slept on the fact that one of the invocations can give a player who gets hit a lot a reaction option that does reliable damage.
    That'd be pretty damn good on the right barbarian.

    A couple of years ago I made a Warlock character who's pact was with the Archdevil Fierna, the pact being meant to grant them the love of the person they themselves loved above all. So I specialized them to focus on charm and enchantment spells, and took the tome boon, because blade didn't fit, and I could get find familiar through an invocation (asked my DM for a Tressym (a tiny CR 0 creature, weaker than an owl) which was an option I liked more (than any chain option) anyway). Also some illusion stuff with mask of many faces, so that they could change outfits every day. Anyway, thematically boon of the Talisman would fit extremly well (even if mechanically it does very little, great for role playing, and also you can use the talisman to trick people), even with the tome their "trinket" was an engagement necklace/pendant that they wore.
    Their backstory is kind of a tragedy of their own making. They were madly in love but feared rejection (or abandonment) so much they went to Fierna and made a deal, giving them some minor magical powers and a one use charm spell/potion/item that they used on thier love interest, and was then immedetly discovered by the community for having done that and devil worship, being banished as a consequence. Instead of aquring love, they lost everything (likely including their soul), what a great bargain/deal. Now they have magical powers, and no home to return to, oh well, guess adventuring is their only carreer choice left, or maybe they should just start a cult, options...

    First this is my first time finding your vids and I love it. Second Tashas adds a feature when you hit ability score improvements that you can swap one pact for another. I've been playing a fey warlock with pact of the tomb as my character didn't think they'd be with a party ever. More so did they not think they may grow feelings for a fellow party member. And if they do fall in love to a point I'm definitely swapping out for pact of the talisman and giving it to my ic partner

    Bold of you to assume that I am going to give my talisman to an ally to protect them instead of myself!!
    I’m playing an undead patron warlock with the talisman boon and it’s VERY fun. The temp HP plus rebuke of the talisman is very handy, and makes me nearly untouchable. Being able to use a bonus d4 whenever I might fall short of a success is almost like a built in lucky feat. It’s very niche in what it does, but I’m quite a fan so far.

    Edit: great channel, keep it up man
    My theory as to why the original UA version war removed was Jack of All Trades. Bardlock is in fact a very common combo, and even without any of it's invocations, it allowed you to have a 1d4+1 to all skill checks with which you had no proficiency, considering a 5th level character (Bard 2 / Warlock 3 to get both Jack and the Talisman), in other words, a +2- +5 range. At 17th, even if almost no campaign will see that level, the range was +4- +7. considering most rolls will come closer to the average result, it meant the character could've had the mathematical equivalent of proficiency in all skills.

    Subbed! A very useful and informative video but I can't help being severely underwhelmed by this pact. Although all the pacts require invocations for them to come to life I think these invocations are weak; at early levels when your prof is 2 and you are rolling just a d4 it will be almost ineffectual.
    Compared to having an imp from chain or 3 extra cantrips from tome, I think Talisman is disappointing. I would still like to play a one-shot with it mostly because Warlock is probably my fav class and I think this pact fits nicely with the Genie subclass, which is badass.

  • @isthisajojoreference
    @isthisajojoreference 3 года назад +1

    I wish this pact was just a little stronger and had some more invocations for it because it's so cool but just completely outclassed by all the other options. There should definitely be an invocation that gives you another talisman, that just seems like a no-brainer to me, and I'm kinda baffled that it doesn't already exist. I also really think that it should have an invocation like the one they made for pact of the tome that lets you cast sending to an ally. I really like that invocation, I especially like that you write their name in your tome, but it fits so much better with the pact of the talisman. I'd also consider having the pact give you 2 talismans by default.

  • @garrondumont7891
    @garrondumont7891 3 года назад

    I mourn that this pact isn't particularly strong mechanically, because flavour wise it's actuallly my favourite pact. For a while I've wanted to make a Fiendlock who was a member of the "demon court", and was in fact the wife of one of the demons. I struggled to decide which pact to take, and as soon as I see this one I know it's perfect for the character. Someone who charms people with the additional d4, keeps enemies at a distance rather than confronting them, and their talisman could be their wedding ring.
    Also, holy crap this is high quality for your number of subs, and I saw someone mention you only had 50 when you made this. I think this is the first time I've ever subbed after watching only a single video.

      Im playing a genie warlock. What are your thoughts for the warlock and how do you like the peace cleric?

    • @hellpenguin3031
      @hellpenguin3031 3 года назад

      @@seanheath711 So for my peace cleric, it's been a lot of fun, and a different direction for one of my favorite characters I've made for 5e. It's a lot of promoting teamwork. It reflects well on my little kobold trying to redeem herself and help others, as well as echoing her two goddesses.
      As for the warlock, it's one of my first pc in a long time that focus on flavor first, mechanics second. A kenku that makes a deal with a djinn for wishes. He wants to be able to fly, and when he wants to talk, he holds his lantern to his head like a seashell and repeats everything his djinni patron has to say. She, in turn, is a mischievous patron that kind of acts as the real character, while looking at the kenku as a pet or a sibling. Her goal is to get even with the kraken that bound her to the lantern after the spellplague.
      Function wise, I'm looking at extending the range of eldritch blast as much as possible to snipe people with wind bullets, using wind spells to keep people off of me, and eventually blasting from the sky like a fighter plane.

      @@hellpenguin3031 how are you using the talisman?

    • @hellpenguin3031
      @hellpenguin3031 3 года назад

      @@seanheath711 Depends on the situation. I plan on passing it out when needed or directed to by my patron, but plan on holding onto it if I expect combat. I'd be using Rebuke of the Talisman to punish people that came after me, going along with the theme of pushing enemies away so I can stay at a distance. If I get the teleporting invocation later on, then I might even be able to do some funny shenanigans later, if I can come up with a few. Problem is I'm still new to warlock, as they haven't really interested me in the past, so I'm still focusing more on flavor than how it all comes together.

Especially if you take Investment of the Chain Master Eldritch Invocation. Beings able to control it on a battlefield with a with a mostly unused bonus action (or if your concentrating on a spell that doesn't require an action to maintain) to help, attack, or protect someone is jut too good to pass up. Not to mention all the utility outside of combat.

Some people believe this makes it hands down the best pact, I disagree, I personally think people are a bit too crazy when it comes to initiative bonuses, but it is still probably quite a lot better than any other standard use the pact can give you.

      But you can't actually add it, as you have to *fail* an ability check. Honestly, it'd be better if you could use it whenever you wanted, and didn't use a charge if you didn't pass said check or save if you still fail like with the psi rogue
