    Fun fact: In a Wankel rotary engine, you can actually get increased fuel efficiency by replacing one of the two spark plugs (specifically, the leading plug) with a glow plug.

    • @Xillios
      @Xillios 2 года назад +2

      How does that work? I tried finding information on why this would work, but couldn't find anything.
      Source, I guess?

    • @orangejjay
      @orangejjay Год назад +1

      @@AmaroqStarwind Yeah ... this makes absolutely no sense. You need the spark to ignite the fuel at the proper time. A glow plug isn't going to do that.

    • @Xillios
      @Xillios Год назад +1

      @@AmaroqStarwind No worries, I actually used to own a diesel engined car and learned a lot about diesel engines while I owned it. When the engine is cold, glow plugs ensure the diesel fuel can combust and ignite properly upon startup by heating up to a very hot temperature.
      My presumption is that replacing a spark plug with a glow plug would result in pre-detonation. From what I researched, rotary engines do not experience knock. I read that one reason rotary engines are inefficient is because when the spark ignites, the resulting flame needs to chase the gas inside of the chamber as it rotates. The moving chamber basically forces the unburnt gas away from the initial spark point, making the flame chase the unburnt fuel. This results in unburnt fuel going out of the exhaust. The only possibility I can see with the glow plug working is that it ignites the fuel before the correct spark interval, allowing for a more full burn of the fuel inside the chamber. Alternatively, this can also decrease fuel efficiency since the gas would be igniting before the correct spark interval, meaning that it would likely be working against its own motion.
      I would honestly love to see the results, but honestly I do not see it working at all since the spark needs to be at the correct interval to ignite the gas efficiently enough to continue the cycle. Theoretically if the glow plug thing was true, someone likely would have had the same results by advancing the ignition timing of the leading spark plug. I don't see the glow plug theory working whatsoever because of these factors to be honest.

    With so many other suppliers making LKQ parts, I recommend using OEM parts such as BOSCH due to reliability considered by the vehicle manufacturer. I own a Mercedes and these #glowplugs are a real pita to replace.

      not entirely true..glow plug sensors also monitor if combustion pressure had changed and will kick in to aid the combustion process if the ECU notices poor compression in the fuel/air mixture.

    • @sldghamr1

      Glow plugs are only used when the engine is cold, if it's already warmed up, they are not used. Life expectancy is several years/decades depending on how often you start your engine when cold....

    When driving does glow plugs cause the engine to fire like a spark plug

    • @BoschAutoNA
      @BoschAutoNA  20 дней назад

      Hi @leondavis No, a glow plug doesn’t fire like a spark plug. The glow plug is a heating element that increases the temperature of the air and fuel in the combustion chamber typically during cold-starts and during DPF regeneration.
