Those Sevr Broadheads fly incredibly well and they are insanely accurate. I purchased 5 of the Robusto broadheads for use in my old Barnett Raptor STR crossbow last year. I took four shots into my Block target, 1 at 20 yards, 2 at 30 yards, and the last shot at 40 yards. That left me with one broadhead that I didn’t shoot….and thank God i didn’t shoot it too, because then I would have 5 paperweights instead of 4. The Sevr’s literally hit the exact same poi as my field points, but ALL of them broke after one shot. The little kicker that sticks out in flight, that pushes the blades open on impact, snapped off on all four of the broadheads. One blade broke off on three of the broadheads, and the shaft was bent on two. Now before anyone slams me about my crossbow shooting “fish tail” or “porpoising” arrows… this bow is finely tuned and it’s dead accurate out to 50 yards. New strings and a new cam tune was done 5 weeks before shooting the Sevr’s….and it shoots Swhacker, Rage Trypan, Rage Hypodermic, Grim Reaper, and the cheap Walmart Toxxic broadheads flawlessly. None of these other brands have broken, only the Sevr’s broke. I stopped trying to use them that day and I switched to the Rage Hypodermics after testing the accuracy of all of these that I named.
My crossbow is rated at 400 fps, but it only shoots at 368 fps according to the chrono. The arrows I was using that day when the Sevr Broadheads broke apart are the same arrows I still use and it’s the same I’ve been using for many years….Black Eagle Executioners with 2” speed fletching.
The Sevr Broadheads are absolutely beautiful broadheads that fly better than any I’ve ever tested to date, but they are very fragile and I wouldn’t ever use them on a living animal. You can buy the Sevr’s according to how many you need because they are sold individually, which is an amazing concept that I wish every broadhead company would go to….the Sevr’s have a decent price too, but they are simply not worth any price if they don’t stay together on impact.
I’m not bashing Sevr in any way, I’m just sharing my personal experience with these broadheads. If they could build them out of a high strength steel, then I would certainly buy more of them to try…because their accuracy is absolutely phenomenal.
If anyone else has experienced this same issue with the Sevr broadheads, I would really be interested in hearing what you experienced as well.
I tried switching to Thorn broadheads too, I shot two deer from under 20 yards and both Thorns bent and are not usable now. I called Thorn and they were extremely horrible to deal with. I was beyond kind to them, they we’re just very rude. They finally sent me two replacement broadheads, BUT they sent the wrong broadheads and the wrong weight. I bought the 125gr crossbow rated broadheads and they sent me the 100gr standard ones…the cheapest model they sale. Well, I’m done with Thorn for sure….
After my experience, I would have no problem purchasing from Sevr again…. But I’ll never deal with Thorn.

I've been using Sevr broadheads for a few years now, and I've never had one to break. I shot one that passed through a deer and buried into a pine tree. I had to wiggle the arrow back and forth to get it out, and it was still fine. I've had the tips of a couple 2.0's to curl, but oddly enough, it wasn't on the broadhead that hit the pine. My main issue with Sevrs is practicing with the head. After four or five shots into a foam target, the wings of the broadhead that allow it to open become bent, rendering the head useless for hunting. Also, the price per head is slowly but surely increasing. The price is still on par with some other heads, but those heads are overpriced too, in my opinion.

Why would you want a pivoting 2 blade that would hide one whole side of a broadhead while going through the animal. Makes 0 cents. Im asking seriously as I love D&DH and all of your expert opinions. Im switching from montecs to the g5 deadmeat V2 crossbow this fall. Im really excited as usual for archery season, now only 4 days and a wakeup.

Hi JR - The benefit on that design is when it hits bone, the one side of the blade pivots around it and allows the broadhead to keep penetrating. It works. I've shot these since they came out 5 years ago and have had tremendous success with them. -DS

From everything I’ve seen, I choose mechanical heads as opposed to fixed for crossbow. Particularly super fast crossbows.
The technology behind that of modern mechanical heads is totally different now compared to years ago and making a judgment about mechanical heads based on what happened in 1992 doesn’t make good sense.
There was an in depth 30 year study by the Quality Deer Management Association. The study showed hard data that hunters using mechanical heads had a significant advantage in recovering their deer compared to fixed heads. This was particularly true with crossbows.
Hunters However are a very particular and even stubborn bunch. Their memories are long. Even a bad experience with 1990’s technology will stay with them for life.
Everyone must use the gear that they are comfortable with. Tradition and one’s trick knee are not always the best determinants.

After college, when I got a chance to get back into bow hunting, I started using the Swhackers. They worked great and killed a lot of deer for me, but oftentimes, I got horrible blood trails. That isn't to say that I didn't get massive blood trails, either, at times. I still shoot them in my vertical bow sometimes. Those or the 1.7 or 1.5 Sevrs. I'm thinking of going to a rear deploying head for my crossbow this year, but it definitely won't be a Rage product.
