Coplilot is in charge of remembering the course, the driver just has to follow the turn signals - there's no way your brain is gonna learn the course, keep track of it AND drive those boats at these kinds of speeds. As has been said, the crashes come when there's a miscommunication, having watched this racing live (in New Zealand, actually) the video doesn't do justice to just how fast they go, it's like watching an F1 car take a corner after a regular race car, just doesn't seem real

What a presence this guy must bring to these races. I bet every kid there will never forget seeing those wrecks, and I mean that in a good way. It's so cool to see someone race the fastest they can go, and brush up against danger. You can see that plain as day in his racing here. It's a rawness.
I remember going to the dirt track as a kid, and watching drivers make their way up front, with only three wheels on the track, passing inside and out if need be.
This was a good video, even more than usual.
