I'll be the first to admit I don't know a whole lot about playing guitar, but that sounded to me like every high school level guitar player.
He played an extra verse but it was played well. I mean, shredding and doing hammer on and pull offs (aka: flashy stuff) only makes the somg tacky.
....it's like adding freestyle lines to the lords prayer....
That being said, Metallica did an amazing version. This wasn't great.

Nah! National Anthems at military events are sung calmly, not "soul stirring" style. The words and pride give you that. Anything "extra" is seen as tacky and lacking honor/decorum.

Santana never was a rock n roll guitar player. His style is a mixture of Spanish, Bahamas, and Latina. His solos are simple and easy. I have never seen him playing speed picking or shredding. What the hell is this announcer trying to say? “Rock n roll legend “? That’s absurd statement and an insult to all actual rock n rolls.
This was bad, but " shredding" & playing is fast as you can is not what makes a great guitarist. Its emotion, distinctiveness & then technical ability. There's nothing worst than a player that is all speed & technical. The high water mark for this is Hendrix at Woodstock, 1969. No one had matched that for all 3 qualities I named

The Hendrix version is legendary and is a brilliant fucking masterpiece, this pales in comparison and is clearly an imitation, is that what you meant Austin? Anyway also the best singers who do this piece always milk the rubato aspect of it this was very rigid and locked into tempo. And weirdly, the song is in 3 but he forced it into 4/4, not a very musical choice in my opinion but hey, what the fuck do I know?

Amy I'm aware both of them played at Woodstock, however Hendrix is the one who set the bar for the national anthem in this case, not Santana. Nothing against him, I love a lot of his music, this was just a bad performance, we all have them, oh well.
