    Excellent video. Harmonic balancer failure is a known issue on the 335d (I've had two) with lifespans reportedly ranging from 50K to 100K miles (broad range!). Damper went out on my first one at 100K miles. I replaced it with a Corteco but sold the car at 117K miles so can't speak to longevity of that brand. With the second 335d just turning 70K miles, it was on my mind to replace the balancer soon. Although I routinely and recently inspect it (with an endoscope), it suffered catastrophic failure yesterday. My indications were total loss of power steering and a burnt rubber smell. Visual inspection with the engine running revealed the damper turning intermittently so I immediately shut off the A/C to reduce the load, parked safely, and called for a tow. With the A/C off, I had enough residual functionality to permit me to drive off the tow trailer and into my driveway. I reviewed this excellent video to refresh my memory and got a few good tips I hadn't considered previously.
    Prices on new balancers vary widely on the internet depending on manufacturer and currently range from $166 for Febi/Bilstein to $761 for BMW. I wouldn't recommend any "no name" brand. Ensure you change the bolts as well as they are "torque plus stretch" and thus one-time use. I will also replace the serpentine and A/C belts as preventive maintenance. I have the Lisle 59370 bump tool for the stretch belt--it works well, can't speak to the other variants out there. BMW part numbers are: Harmonic Balancer/Vibration Damper 11238511371, 4 each Torx Bolt (M10x86) 11232247932, Ribbed V Belt 11287792059, and Belt Drive Climate Compressor 64557793608.
    Remember: BMWs are hobby cars, not daily drivers!

    Thank you for the video. We were in Florida last Fourth of July when this started to happen to us. I didn’t know what was going on. I just thought the ac went out and the belt broke. But I just know started working on it and replaced the main belt and was doing the ac belt and realized that the harmonic balancer pulley was broken. Your video just saved me a lot of money and time. Keep up the great work

    My son’s BMW 335d’s harmonic balancer went out last Fourth of July while we were in Florida and I didn’t know what was wrong with it. I drove it back to North Carolina with it messing up which is about a 14 hour drive. But when I figured out what was wrong I watched your video and you showed me a lot about the car. Thank you for the video. You were a big help.

      you have to lock the trans, which is a different story. i attempted it, gave up half way and now will have a mechanic do it (bought the part on ebay for $190)
      lucky i know a mechanic that can do it for cheap.

    • @FjordTrotter
      @FjordTrotter 4 года назад

      @livey oone bcause the torque to release those bolts is so strong it will literally turn the crankshaft. to do it you need to add a small lockpin to stop the crank from turning.

    Doing mine tomorrow. Made it home just before the light came on and it overheated. I already have the upgraded harmonic from Whitbread performance. I have a locker tool and a belt tool. Thanks for such detail. Im excited instead of apprehensive and I know what all the bolt sizes are now. Much appreciative!

      Hey man. My belt snapped while driving and I just barely made it back home. Is that what happened to you? Did you have any problems with the engine now after replacing the belt or is it running smoothly?

      It's getting harder and harder for me to lay on the ground as I age. My back hurts more after laying on the ground then leaning over the front. But that's why I now have a lift, to make life easier.

    Mine just blew !! No charging alternator , still had AC but I smelt like burning rubber when turned on and Power steering was Tight. The belt and everything still ran so I assumed the vibration damper was freely spinning with the belt. 700$ part from Bmw with the promise of another Damper failing in 60k miles. Bmw dealerships say until next time ! P.S parts online are 300$ lifetime lasting

    Thanks for the video.
    2 questions.
    How many kms. Has you made since you remove the old damper??
    Had any problem with damper Corteco??
    Vibrations??
    I had to change in my BMW m57 330d E90 , the original damper is too expensive.
    Any problem to block engine ???
    Thanks

    Do you think it’s ok if I didn’t use a torque wrench when installing the 4 bolts on HB? Should I replace them?

    How did you undo the bolts with out the balancer turning the engine back on itself

    So I was told my H balancer could be bad by a new friend of mine that has a 335d and said it was his issue. Not sure it’s mine too, will the car still crank? Mine won’t. I was driving and the windshield wipers came on and wouldn’t turn off, then all dash lights came on and the car just turned off , and since that happened , it won’t crank at all

      I’m sure you’ve sorted this now, but that will be the alternator overcharging. The car shuts everything down to protect itself.

      The stock replacement works fine under normal operating. The other reason was availability. They were on backorder when this one went out.

    What's the cost of the harmonic balancer, my mechanic is pricing a new one to me at about $850 (part only) for my 2011 355d.

    • @okcvet1st
      @okcvet1st  4 года назад +1

      Depends on brand and where you buy it. I wouldn't trust any balancer off any auction style or marketplace type website. The Fluidampr I believe is currently backordered. Dorman part #594-780 from a local part store is around $815. Dorman from Summit Racing is $470. Shipping time frame varies. If you can wait, order from Summit to get it cheaper, and also get a company that stands behind their products.

      You can find them at FCP Euro or RM European at the latter they are around $200-$300 depending on brand www.rmeuropean.com/Products/11238511371-MFG270-V4963.aspx but also check out the Fluidampr version sold by AA Rodriguez - I have one of these - it works well and in theory should also last forever www.tunemyeuro.com/fluidampr-for-bmw-335d-and-x5-35d-2009-2013/

      The OEM brand is Corteco and you can buy themn for $300 at RM European www.rmeuropean.com/Products/11238511371-MFG270-V4963.aspx. They also have other brands such as Vaico www.rmeuropean.com/Products/11238511371-MFG604-V4963.aspx. Also try searching FCP Euro. Also if my mechanic came back with $800 for the part only he would not be my mechanic any more
