  • FOX6's 2002 sports special marks the 25th anniversary of Marquette's 1977 championship in men's basketball. The Emmy-Award wining show chronicled the unlikely journey as the Warriors won the NCAA title in Coach Al McGuire's final game. It features TV6 film from 1977 -- much of which had not been seen in more than 2 decades. GAME VIDEO COURTESY: NCAA/NBC SPORTS

I grew up a Marquette fan, attending games at the Milwaukee Arena and the Chicago Stadium double headers, consisting of Marquette, Loyola, Notre Dame and Illinois. He was a personal icon and hero in my eyes. Current coach Shaka Smart and his Marquette Warriors are primed to resurrect the era of Al again.0:39 e e

I always thought it was interesting that his final season was the year the dunk was reintroduced in college and high school. The game began to open up and guys were starting to really play above the rim. Probably suited Ellis, Whitehead and Toone perfectly...

Amen to more likes. Ncaa tourney in 70s was a joke. 74 had Marqutte, Diggers 26-3 team, Michigan and Vanderbilt in a 6 tesm region. The 4,8,9 and 20 best teams were put in one region. Irish were 26-2. Marq and mich got byes. Hapoened in 75 76. Al and digger were put in brutal regions.

In 1976, #1 (ranked, not seeded) Indiana had to play #6 Alabama and #2 Marquette in the REGIONAL.

God oint. Meanwhile UCLA was always playing cupcakes out West. Back then BYU ( average team at best ) , Wyoming ( ? not good ) Santa Clara ( Overrated & weak schedule ) These teams that they played were weak. So Wooden always got to the finals with no pressure games. I'd liked to have seen them go against the Midwest teams like Coach Al and others had to .

2002-03 Marquette Golden Eagles With Dwayne Wade should've won the 2003 NCAA Final Four against Syracuse.

Based on what? They got blown out by Kansas who lost to Syracuse. Granted the margin was mostly due to their poor 3pt shooting. They made three 3s that night after averaging nine per game in the tournament. Even if they hit their average for 3s against Kansas they still lose by 15.

If you had coach Al. Yes. Watching him and Digger Phelps going head to head was amazing. Brooklyn guy vs Queens guys was great. They both were working the refs from the tip. He left coaching and took a desk job. Was bored and realuzed he wasnt teaching. Packer and Enberg convinced NBC to hire him. They didnt know he was gonna be a sideline guy. He was going to quit but they said you are going regret this. That 3 man team was better than MNF. Coach Al was asked his opionin of game? It alwYs came true in 2nd half. If you never saw him coach or as a tv guy. He was the most honest, caring and loving guy. For teams he hated playing. AlwAys coaching both players and coaches. Loved the game but loved his players more.
