  • The EDGE OF THE WOODS calls on the principles of the Haudenosaunee Condolence and the Requickening Address which focuses on 3 Matters: Wiping Away the Tears, Unplugging the Ears and Unstopping the Throat. Traditionally this protocol is used to help those who are in mourning after the loss or passing of leader. The three matters or burdens deal with the eyes, ears and throat of the bereaved and the enactment of Wiping away the Tears, Unstopping the Ears and Clearing the Throat will restore the ability to see clearly, hear and finally to be able speak and express themselves.
Metaphorically the action of wiping away the burdens will prepare our young people to be prepared to see and think clearly, to be able to sit and listen, receive knowledge and information, lastly to be able speak clearly and share ideas.
August 12-14 Students from local Indigenous Communities were invited to participate in a three day camp which shared the teachings of the Edge of the Woods protocol along with other Haudenosaunee practices. Students were exposed to the practice of Wampum Belt making and the significance of wampum. Additionally they were able to learn about traditional pottery and made traditional pots. Students learned about archery and learned about medicine plants and traditional foods.
This camp was made possible through generous support from the Greater Good Project of the First Unitarian Church of Rochester, NY. Thanks to their support we will be able to host this camp again next year.
