I’m trying to decide what method to use to build am organic frame border on my mixed media piece on panel . Something like looking like intertwined branches shaped into a frame around my subject on the gallery panel. Possible drywall compound out of a syringe , or from paper mache clay or Apoxie clay. Not sure what’s best.
Are you going to sell your mask patterns themselves? If not, it's much easier and faster to make multiple copies of your original masks using a silicone mold. I have a video showing how that’s done here: ruclips.net/video/zevmy70b4oo/видео.html To make a mask pattern, I create a clay model, like the fox sculpture I used for that video, and I make a mold. Then I create multiple copies of the mask, cut them apart, scan the pieces, attach them to cardboard and cut them out. Then I tape them together and see if the pieces fit correctly. It usually takes at least ten tries, and with the instructions included it takes me three to four weeks to complete a pattern, working full time. In the same amount of time I could have created seven or eight original masks using paper mache over clay, Like the one in this video: ruclips.net/video/BBqBnrtAwUQ/видео.html Or I could have made 30 or more copies using paper mache in a silicone mold. The patterns really only make sense if you want to help other people make a mask of their own using your design. Another option is to do a Google search for how to make low-poly papercraft animals. I think there are some videos on RUclips showing how to do that with Blender and Pepakura. They aren’t realistic, but the angles and triangles do look interesting.
How about a kickstarter to get all these and more tutorials put into an ongoing series of books? Kickstarter to cover payment to the authors of the posts and costs for making the books.
Hi Petrik. I have quite a few books already, but I wrote them myself. I'm a terrible people manager, and the idea of trying to work out the royalties and copyrights for all those authors doesn't appeal to me at all. Have I mentioned that I'm lazy? 😀
Hello! Thank you for your videos. I love them.I have a question. I'm doing a mache project and i watched your video on how to make paperclay. And you use joint compound. But ive tried to look for it here in mauritius and i cant find it. What i got is an " exterior crackfiller" in powder form where you have to mix with water to get a paste you can seal gaps around doors and window frames, cements bricks and tiles ...it says it is cement based vynil reinforced.. oh johny i so want to make a mache sculpture tell me this could work. Tell me this could work😐
I can't experiment with your product, so I can't tell you if it works or not. Do your local builders use drywall (also known as plaster board and Sheetrock) to build walls? If they do, the DIY store will have the material they use to cover the cracks between the drywall sheets. If you live in a country that makes wall with some other material, you probably won't be able to buy the drywall joint compound.
@@UltimatePaperMache sadly we mostly buid houses with concrete here. No drywalls etc. But ill give a try to the crackfiller to see if i can work with it. Hopefully it will work . Thank you. I love what you do. Keep it up .
If you're using them for Halloween masks or other short-term outdoor use, any outdoor varnish will work. The paper mache will still soften if you leave it outside in the rain, though. If that happens, you need to bring it back inside and let it dry out again. I haven't found a good way to make paper mache waterproof for long-term outdoor use. Some people have had good luck with a product call Flex Seal, but others have tried it and said it didn't work.
I have a question I was wondering how does the air dry clay and or the paper mache clay hold up in humid weather I live with a lot of moisture in my house but I bought the supplies and I'm worried my projects won't hold up can you let me know your thoughts please thank you
Humid environments can be challenging with any form of paper mache. I live in Minnesota, which can be very humid in the summer - but nothing like areas further south. The keys to keeping paper mache a long time is to make sure it dries out very quickly once the paper mache clay has been applied to the armature. Fans help. If the piece is small enough you might be able to speed up the drying time in an oven, but don't get it too hot - don't go over 200F. Once the piece is completely dry, all the way through, be sure to seal it with both paint and acrylic varnish. If water from the air can't get inside the sculpture, it should hold up well. Good luck with it!
