    My favorite part of these tutorials are how they aren’t just “hacks” for your music or a single producer’s way of doing things that they present as the only way to do it... this technique alone really helped me understand some major principles of compression and expansion and can be used in so many situations. I immediately thought of a track I have where the lead guitar needs to sit above a bit, and this would work perfectly!

    Nice use of the expander. I've been ducking the music for a while to get it out of the way, but not expanding the vocals, and that's the key to making this really work!

    Hi Chris, this is great help for me. Thanks for your channel. I just have one question about using of expander: when you use it for vocal, do I need to put also to all my backup vocals or use a sub bus for all vocals?

    Cool video. Is there no concern that you are dynamically increasing the volume of the vocal when the music is louder even when the vocal is already loud? Seems like it would make more sense to raise the volume of the quieter vocals?

  • @NickHolum

    Waves F6 is great (better imo) for that first trick. Only cutting frequencies rather than compressing whole mix.

    • @ToddFerguson
      @ToddFerguson 4 года назад +2

      You could accomplish something similar with the stock Multipressor plugin, set it up so only 2 or 3 bands are getting compressed, and then set individual compression amounts for each band, as well.

    • @JeroenvanOlffen

      Preferences > Display > Tracks, set Color to Auto Progress 24 or 96. This will auto color all new tracks in this way. Or choose colors you like for the same track types and save those as a Project template (for ex 8 vocal tracks green, drums tracks orange, etc etc). Hope that helps

    A great video again. Presumably though you would only use one or the other of these tools in a project, but not both? If engineers user both expansion and compression in a sub mix then for what would be the reason? Thanks.

    I would avoid sending your drums to the submix if your going to sidechain the vocals to it, its better to have something in the mix thats keeping a regular volume (Drums).

    • @EpithetMusicTV
      @EpithetMusicTV 3 года назад

      that’s how i do it too. have a drum bus which gets untouched by any vocal side-chaining and then a bus with all other instruments that i side chain vocals to. i think a regular compressor is a bad way to do it though. i prefer a multiband compressor or dynamic eq. more recently i’ve started using trackspacer and liking the results of that even more especially with the m/s processor engaged.

    You are a great teacher and Logic expert, but as a beginner and German speaking I do understand much, but not everything. I don’t know and understand the things with buses and side chaining. I do not understand how I can route all the instruments to a track called „music“ so that I can make all the music mor silent when the vocals come in ...

    • @jdrukman

      Willi Veider you set the output field in logic, or you can use a summing track stack.
