I remember watching this live. Incredible shot, but incredible play drawn up by the coach. Louisana Tech was anticipating Smith to set a screen on the low block, but she just slipped straight out to the 3 pt line and was wide open. I'm always impressed when a coach makes something up on the spot and can get a wide open look.
Shot clock error. You need 0.9 seconds to catch and shoot. Anything below that is basically a tip attempt. There was almost a half second pause before the shot started running. So this shot should not have counted..therefore nobody talks about it.
Idk cause that one chick a few years back, the African girl on Notre Dame had two buzzer beaters in one final four. I think one sent UConn home and the other to win the championship. Closest thing I’ve seen to that in the men’s and women’s college game was Christian Laettner hitting two buzzer beaters to send Duke to the final four on two different occasions.
She and Marion Jones on the same team. The ultimate in speed and athleticism. Charlotte Smith could actually dunk the basketball which could have been attributed to genetics .... seeing as she is David (Skywalker) Thompson's neice.
I knew Marion Jones was playing, Virginia's Tora Suber owned her twice which is why UNC's record was 33-2. Suber was too fast for Jones - she scored 29 and 24 against Jones during the regular season.
Packed stadium because the media had announced earlier in the day that 8 years later, a potential player named Caitlin Clark would be born. Its true...even 8 years before her birth, Clark was filling stadiums just in the mere anticipation of her birth. Impressive.
The clock apparently started slightly late, yet the ball leaves her hands with 0.3 seconds left. So even if the clock had started instantly, either she would have got the shot off in time or it would have been too close to rule otherwise. (The space key pauses or unpauses the video, whereas the period key moves a frame forward and the comma key a frame backward.)
@@ransom6892 yea you're right. A few comments point out the clock didn't start right away on the shot but there also should've been more time in the first place. So sort of events out. Really bad work done by the refs/time officials

UNC was saved by an unnecessary call. Marion Jones had possession while sitting on the court and the defense should have just surrounded her while time expired.
Yes she is. She was supposed to take over for Barmore as head coach a couple years later but there was a dispute over $ with President and she went to Baylor
@@racelllee5144 Not surprised. She was a star point guard for that school in the early 80s when they won the championship but I guess that didn't count for anything.
Ok folks, here's definitive proof that the shot would have been late if the clock had started on time: We all know that the clock started late, but how late? And does it even matter? Well, going frame by frame with the comma and period keys, she gets the shot off with 0.3 on the clock, so we need to see if the clock was delayed 0.3 seconds or more. Let's rewind frame by frame, starting with the first frame where we can see the clock go from 0.0 to 0.1. From that point, it takes three frames for every tenth of a second to pass, or 18 frames to go from 0.1 to 0.7. Now we need to keep rewinding frame by frame and see how many frames it takes to get to the first frame before she catches the ball. 12 frames would be 0.4 seconds of delay, meaning the shot would not have been in time, and by my count there are actually 15 frames. So in actuality, it took just about exactly 0.9 seconds for her to catch and shoot. And for the record, I live in Idaho and have no ties to either school. I just thought this debate was interesting and wanted to find out the answer definitively. I am not bitter about this game or anything and would have analyzed this exactly the same if UNC had been robbed.
You really have to go over the full game. What about the play that left .7 on the clock? Is is possible that more time was taken off than necessary? Or at any point during the game..
I just watched it. On the play before, the referee blew the whistle when there was 1.1 seconds left. That should have have been the time on the clock instead of 0.7.
Put that in slo-mo then add the "lighting" around the backboard to it in a video editor and sync it up. Ball was on her fingertips when the horn sounded. . Should not have counted.
@@flyguyry1 No you cannot.
