  • Electric Bicycles, or eBikes, are becoming a popular option for those who are working from home more. Let's take a look at a popular brand in the segment: Super73 and their Z1 entry level bike. Carbage host, Justin Banner, test drives this ebike to see what he fuss is about and has plans to make it into a "tracker" project bike.

    Nice vid. I love my Z1! Did the "Speed Hack" & upgraded to external bottle mount 17ah battery. Next level now, 27mph & 25+ miles of range. 😎👍

      @Photogga Blogga, thanks for watching! I'm not familiar with the "speed hack." I was looking for quick ways to get some more MPH out of it, but decided that a new controller would be the best way to go after not finding any information on modifying/reprogramming the S73 controller. Still wouldn't mind trying and showing what that "speed hack" is for viewers as another baseline before I install the new controller and the pair of 48v/20ah batteries I have set to install.

      @@Carbageonline Do a google or youtube search of "Z1 speed hack", you'll find vids / diagrams on how to do it. It's pretty simple, just cutting 1 wire inside the controller.

      Carbage I did Brian’s speed and dual battery (36v 20ah) hack . Night and day difference in terms of speed, mileage and duration. Rarely use original battery ...and my top speed has been 36mph, kid u not.
      Z’s are a lot of fun!!

    How’s it holding up ? How many miles can you get riding just the holding the throttle ? Any maintenance so far ?

    • @Carbageonline
      @Carbageonline  4 года назад

      It's been great. My biggest problem is finding new places to puncture the rear tube. Not a very clean area I live around, when it comes to riding on the far right side of the road. That's why, if you look on my Instagram (instagram.com/carbageonline), you'll see that I've swapped out the OE 12 wire gauge spokes for Sapim 13 wire gauge spokes that I got from ProWheelBuilder.com. Tire will remain the same for consistency of the Speed Hack runs. I've only got one initial run in, but I want to live with it for about a week or so before I release that video to give thoughts and/or concerns about it.
      The way I ride, I'm getting about 15 to 18 miles. From a dead stop, I'm not going all throttle as I'm pedaling for about three or four full revolutions before feeding throttle in. If I do need a bit more help getting to speed, then I will use the motor while I pedal (even though it is not a true "pedal assist" bike).
      This is mostly done to prevent the electronics from seeing anything above 25-amps as a full battery (with a full-charge voltage of 42v) could send that through the controller if the motor demands more than 1000w (the nominal of the motor is 500w and can take a peak of 1000w, but it is possible to demand over that, especially now that I have removed the speed limiter wire as 42v*26a=1092 watts and potentially within this motor's power capability). It's also good practice just to make sure you don't pull too much demand from the 36v battery.
      I'll experiment with where the motor actually taps out and fails at some point, but I won't do that until I have another motor ready to replace it. This bike will eventually get a dual motor setup (rear hub and mid-drive) and I'm already looking at a pair of FlipSky FSESC 6.6 60a controllers since they have CANBUS control to allow for two controllers to work in parallel and can be programmed for features like regen braking, power limiting, current limiting, throttle curves, motor speed, and more.
      Maintenance has been mostly adjusting for brake pad wear and dealing with tube punctures. Haven't had any other issues or maintenance requirements as of yet. I will probably clean the chain and lube it with some Motul Off-Road Bike Chain Lube, but that's the only other thing I foresee at the moment.

    Hi, great vid! I’ve been looking at this bike on the super73 website and in the spec it states that it doesn’t have a throttle?! Is that a mistake as it clearly has in your video Thankyou

    I know you have done the speed hack. How has that effected your range?

    • @Carbageonline
      @Carbageonline  3 года назад +1

      It's hard to believe but not that much. It sort of makes sense that I haven't since it was just limiting the full speed of the bike but not full power. The stock controller will always try to supply the power needed to maintain demand until the 18-19 MPH limit. My normal riding demand hasn't changed, just the speed limit.

      @@Carbageonline mine should be delivered in a week or so. Took longer with the Astro Orange. Given me time to lose a few pounds... Probably will keep it stock a few months.

    • @Carbageonline
      @Carbageonline  3 года назад +1

      I recommend anyone doing that with any new vehicle. Ride it stock first and see what you like or don't, then move on towards improvements. Though, I would probably look at a different set of tires. The stock ones give great performance until it comes to puncture resistance. If you want to keep them invest in tire liners, Slime sealant, or both. Personally, I will be looking into a set of 16-inch dual sport motorcycle tires, since a "20x4.00" bicycle rim is actually a 16-inch diameter rim. Looking at a set of Shinko Trail Pro SR241 as they look similar to flat track tires and are even used on small practice bikes.

      I'm still around. I had tested positive for COVID-19 back during the end of January. Didn't have symptoms, but did run into issues after my 14 days in self quarantine. I've been doing better now so I should have an update on the project soon.

    The only thing stopping me from buying one is iv heard that the power cuts off a lot and you have to restart it

    • @Carbageonline
      @Carbageonline  3 года назад

      In the amount of time I have had this Z1, I have not run into that issue. The only time it cut out on me was when I drained the battery. I have been hearing about some issues with their new full suspension bike related to the motor, but nothing from their lower models. Even after doing the "Speed Hack" (video coming very soon), I haven't had motor or controller issues.

    • @Sonyrocks1Of
      @Sonyrocks1Of 3 года назад

      Carbage yeh it’s a huge issue a lot of ppl talk about the power just randomly shutting off on the z1 if they hold throttle to long

    • @Carbageonline
      @Carbageonline  3 года назад

      Sounds like a potential overheating issue of the controller. I'm in an urban environment, so I don't hold the throttle for longer than a couple of miles or so, depending on the timing of the stop lights and traffic. Makes me wonder if a small scoop that helps direct more air to the controller wouldn't be a solution to that. It does get warm as I ride at higher speeds than stock from what I am seeing. The controller sits at the front of the seat and does have a panel exposed to the air, maybe not enough getting to the mosfets? Have to investigate that.
