With a wheelbase of just 2.88 m in the short version against the Audi A8 and especially against the S-Class and BMW 7 series, no chance. Still a great, comfortable car with nice gimmicks
VW phaeton ... The last car in Piech's time ... The guy had a crazy vision, for example the engine was to be made so that at 200 per hour there would be no vibrations. The windows were not supposed to evaporate, even if you put a kettle with boiling water inside. Unfortunately, the car did not catch on well and it was the only attempt to create a premium class limousine from VW. All in all, and why if they have an Audi A 8 for it PS or these vent plugs, They are supposed to heat up and be something like a radiator :) PS 2 in my opinion, the ideal engine for this car is the W 12

@@piotrnapora5810 Did you ever own one??? What is cheap this days? There was no big issues with this model. The gearbox for W12 tend to fail probably to its engine power.
And 7’8 to a hundred….with a V8…
@@marcuszorro1132 Buying a VW that's both as expensive to buy and to maintain as a top model Mercedes is just not a thing a lot of people do especially in Germany. I only saw them in the hands of enthusiasts or being used as high end taxis, for example billionaires or politicians who don't want to show off their wealth but also want to enjoy luxuries bought them.

Most people don't like or don't care about this car, and I understand they'd rather go for the A8, because of the status of the Audi brand.
But I just love the class of this thing. So much more elegant than the fancier cousin...and in a way, very understated. Only those who know this car, the story behind it, know its value.
Too bad the maintenance costs are too high, according to what I've read about them.
I just wonder if even more than the Audi A8.
On very early ones, horrible.... 1500 for each shocker system, and you couldn't replace just one. Headlights failed and cost a mint...etc etc....
They‘re amazing cars. The early versions are not the best but the later models solved those problems. The car is a class on its own and i love it. Even tho working on them in the Workshop is terrible because they are old and not taken care of

Like the Phaeton D1 this is the best luxuary sedan ever biult. No doubt. The great Ferdinand Piech gave his engineers at the end of the 90s the order "Built me the best sedan ever made" Until today, not only for me, the Phaeton W 12 is the best luxuary sedan ever produced. This is undisputed even among hardcore Mercedes fans. Hopefully the Phaeton will come back under the new CEO Oliver Blume, both as a W 12 with E-Fuels, and as a electric version.

Note how the speedometer values are separated by 10 up to 80, by 20 up to 200, and by 30 from 200 on. Note at 11:05 how the needle slows down when crossing "80".

Eins der unterschätztesten Autos auf dem Markt. Leider war der Absatz bescheiden. Zumindest in den letzten Jahren bekam man die Wagen für wenig Geld hinterhergeworfen. Ich schätze aber, es wird einmal ein begehrter Youngtimer. Der Sound, die tolle Ausstattung und Verarbeitung, sowie die gute Beschleunigung sprechen für sich. Über das Gewicht, die Unterhaltskosten, auch den Verbrauch, decken wir lieber den Mantel des Schweigens.

As You might seen engine is running on LPG. Some time LPG injectors make such noise
There is no timing chain :P Only chain there is between camshafts, and it's noisy only few seconds after startup, until oil pressure expand the tensioner. Talking about v8 version :)
Sounded more like hydraulic valve train being worn. Whatever, the engine was not healthy.

A8 is driver car and Phaeton is only for luxury drive very isolated and quiet,but very,very heavy and is not for any kind of twisty roads.Only for Autobahn and relax.But impressive car anyway.I'm for a8 always,but phaeton is very very good.Sorry for my English 😊

They should have just given the Audi A8 these treatments and it would have sold well. VW is supposed to be the budget friendly sensible vehicle, not a luxury car to keep up with BMW or Mercedes.

Your left turn indicator was damaged, that's why the speed is faster (good visible at 3:04). But the car itself is very nice. I loved it till I saw: It's not much more then a very big Passat.

In Poland we call it "ulep" you have rear lights two before 2007 and two after 2007(in mid of 2007 tail lights become more dark and on roof there are a little antena so car is before 2007)

I have VW Phaeton 4.2 v8 but in silver and i can tell u that this engine is not running fine. Its usually a lot quieter and doesnt sound like diesel and i wanna add to the statement that mine is doing 7.08 secs 0-100 kp/h
