This is one of my favorite songs by the Chili Peppers and Frusciante’s playing on here is a perfect case study for how to make use of all 5 of the CAGED chord forms in different ways - arpeggiating, strumming, fingerpicking, adding hendrix like embellishments, partial chords and triads and 5 or 6 sting voicings. Then there is also the 2 key changes and parallel major and minor, modulating up a fifth....it's awesome! So much we go into here! I hope you enjoy it!Chapters: Intro Full Speed played by John: 0:00 Intro Slower Played by John: 0:27 Intro from Gary: 1:09 1st Verse Full Speed played by John: 2:15 2nd Verse Full Speed played by John: 2:44 2nd Verse Slower Played by John: 3:11 Pre-Chorus played by John: 3:45 Interlude/Last Chorus/Ending played by John: 4:08 Gary Goes Over how John Used ALL 5 CAGED Shapes: 5:24 Gary Reads Question About Hendrix’s Influence: 10:38 Frusciante Shares Story About Hearing Little Wing: 11:03 Gary shares experience with Little Wing: 13:34 John Explains His Technique for Intro: 13:51 Gary goes in depth on Intro: 14:24 John Explains his Thumb-over Rationale: 15:38 Gary Shows Different Fingering options for intro: 16:25 Gary explains the Harmony & Theory of the Intro (Parallel Major/Minor): 19:01 John Talks About the Verse: 21:43 Gary goes deep on Verse 1: 22:07 John Explains his Percussive Technique and Left Hand Muting: 26:28 Gary Goes Deep on Verse 2 and the Hendrix Style Embellishments: 28:05 John Explains the Pre-Chorus and Mixing in Muted Strums: 36:44 Gary Goes In Depth on the Pre-Chorus: 37:04 John Explains the Interlude/Last Chorus & Outro: 38:28 39:04 Gary Explains Key Change and Goes Over Last Section Tips Gary’s Outro: 43:45 Special Thanks to POW MUSIC PATRONS!: 44:30
Masterpiece lesson(as usual).I learnt this song some years ago, now I have a fresh look on it and understand all the key changes embeded...really funny to re-learn things with new perspective. If i had a list of must known guitar songs this one is definitely in.
Great tutorial! I’ve been playing this for years and I keep getting something new out of it every time. The barr on the D shape B is freekin unbelievable. I’ll give it a miss and play it the “normal” way😱.
Really wonderful in depth of this interview! But could you PLEASE do a video like this over the parts he plays after this? Like his R&B funk style and the outro part where he’s just absolutely shredding? I am in awe every time I watch the last couple parts. Thanks!
I actually remember this from 06 as well as the original when the song was first released. I was already a father. Geez. Where has the time gone? Thanks for this.
great explanation. I am learning music theory and chord progression from the songs. Everything in this song confused me but your video is so helpful now I understand everything in the song. thank you so much. Could you do another song from RHCP? (Dani California)
17:45 it’s far too often than I’d ever admit that I hear/see things on the internet that make me wonder how I haven’t choked to death on my own tongue. HOW have I never thought to do this?! Lol
Hi! Pow Musinc are the best tutorials ever. Fretboard animations with the chord and scale shapes are a stellar feature. How can I subscribe to have access to the full material? Thanks!
This is great. But in the second/third verses he sometimes uses the middle finger to slide into the C#m where the video had it as pinky and ring finger. I’ve only really noticed him doing this on this specific video. I still can’t quite do it like John does here in real time but it looks so interesting. Gotta grind it
hi Gary I'm big fan of you. Would you please do me a favor I want to know your hands size measurements from wrist to top of middle finger can you measure it and tell me.thank you🙏🌹
Just did that with a tape measure. From the skin crease where the hand meets the wrist to the top of my middle finger with my hand flat, it's exactly 8 inches.
@@PowMusic thank you Gary for answering me I saw your reply today😣 Is there any chance that you can sent me a picture of it when you measure it I wanna compare it to my hands that really help me out on guitar and how tall are you.thank you again🌹

Can't wait to sink my teeth into this one, nice work Gary
You're the man
Lol john is always playing his chords in an unorthodox way, that’s something I like about his style.
Oh man..where were you when I learned this several years ago. The fretlive would have been a nice touch
Love this!
such a good video, thanks man!
thanks for your work
I play this such a weird way but I get the extra notes in that are on the original that he doesn't play live
GOOD TEACHER THATS HOW YOU DO IT!! Sounds just like John although I heard the original was not done on a strat

Does anybody have a pdf of this exact guitar world magazine? I can’t find it anywhere
Would love to know what you're using to make the fretboard animations
MS Patience
Does anyone know what size frets JF uses?
I think John mute low e string in verse.
can someone tab this out?
I don't think this is the way he does it on the album.
yep, definitely a little different
Pfft. What does this guy know? Another play it wrong teacher on youtube 🙂🙃😅
You should do some breakdowns on heavier stuff as well...
