New World is the biggest new AAA MMORPG release in years, Since launch I've clocked in over 500 hours, seen every piece of content the game as to offer and I've almost maxed every skill in the game, additionally I've tested New World on numerous occasions in the past, the first time being back in 2018 when it was just a generic 50 player per server survival game, completely unrecognizable from what it is today.
This review will likely be more focused on the negatives and providing constrictive criticism for features of the game that can be improved as at this point we're approaching 2 months post launch, the game's lost over 75% of its initial player base and big changes need to be made to make New World an MMORPG that'll last for years to come, If you haven't played New World but would like to get a good idea of the game from start to finish then I have a full Journey to max level series on my channel that I highly recommend watching.
What do you think about New World in 2021? will this eventually become a top 3 MMORPG over the years or do you think it's too fundamentally broken from the exploits to be fixed? let me know in the comments below!

Ignore what I said about the game improving every week from 23:15 - 23:40
AGS made one of the stupidest decisions I've seen from an MMO developer this with the recent update... They release a PTR for testing and feedback, people respond to it positively, on the first major update since the PTR they add a bunch of hidden changes...TO THE MAIN GAME BYPASSING THE PTR and didn't mention it in the patch notes, the majority of these untested hidden changes are massively unpopular, make watermarking almost impossible for solo players and are changes that nobody was asking for, steam reviews have since dropped to mixed... Whoever's in charge of New World has displayed that they are completely clueless, how they still have a job I have no idea, the higher ups must be friends of Jeff Bezos and equally as clueless... idk anymore.

I feel that the biggest flaw of the game is how the PVP player base controls the advancement of PVE players through the management of the settlements. They have way too much power over the game, it makes PVE players feel like they are their slaves that are at their mercy.
I refunded my game before launch because I realized this during their pre-launch. It's a terrible framework for an MMORPG that's supposed to cater to all players.

When I first played New World back when it had no quests, no loot drops, no factions, and no friendly NPCs, it became the only MMO I ever truly loved. I've never played a more social MMO that brought together PvE and PvP so well (I started as a PvE focused, anti-social player, and did a 180 on both fronts). The drama between companies, wars fought over bad blood as much as for land, it was glorious and only needed further development. It felt truly new as an MMO to me, compared to this final release that I didn't even manage 30hrs in because it felt so...old. A boring quest grind with loot drop problems and a broken economy. Sounds familiar to me.
So many of the cons listed here and by others surprise me very little. I was very vocal about these exact kinds of things coming, because AGS leadership directed a complete shift in target audience and tried to rebuild the game into a familiar theme park in a very short amount of time, on a foundation not made for it, using poor tools.
This game may have gone through extensive "testing", but in reality the game as we know it STARTED development during those tests. This game should have been scrapped the moment they decided it wasn't going to follow it's original vision, and been redesigned from the ground up to support their theme park.
But here we are. Amazon's experiment "failed", it did nothing to change or evolve MMOs as a genre, and now I feel it's even less likely for others to experiment with the genre.

    • @Remianen
      @Remianen 2 года назад +3

The problem, in my view, is that the original vision would've made the game a colossal failure, relatively speaking. If you're spending $50-100 million to develop a game, you want to have it recoup that amount, the quicker the better. You don't want to spend that kind of cash and wind up with an overpriced Mortal Online. No one wants to put their job (and reputation and thus, future jobs) in jeopardy chasing a white whale. I liked the original concept, I just didn't think it had the mass appeal required to make it a mainstream success. What AGS should've done was, once the focus was changed, they should've pushed the launch back at least a year to recalibrate their systems. Now, it'll take them 3-5 years just to do that and try to earn back enough goodwill so people will play it in large numbers (much like Hello Games did with No Man's Sky).

    • @ralfrudi3963
      @ralfrudi3963 2 года назад

PvP only sadbox MMOs are a VERY hard sell though with only a tiny niche of players actually enjoying them longterm plus player behavior usually changes from Alpha/Beta to live. While during early testing people are just having fun because they know everything will be deleted soon they become much more serious once the game hits live servers. Most MMO players have learned to avoid (hardcore) PvP MMOs. Even if they shut down the Servers tomorrow, from a business perspective the change in direction probably was the right call. The initial launch alone was pretty big and very likely made them more money than a niche PvP MMO every would.

@@ralfrudi3963 It's hard to say how popular their original design would have been, because it was never given a fair shot. The MMO genre is feeling stale, and I think part of it is that they keep chasing the same MMO players. Most "Hardcore" MMOs I've seen/tried are frankly terribly designed and are full of all kinds of jank, while New World not only wasn't quite so "hardcore" but was remarkably solid in the space it was occupying at the time. It could have been a chance to bring new blood to MMOs and make room for new ideas (even if they didn't go viral), but as you say, they made the typically risk-averse business decision to chase safe money at the cost of game integrity.

New World needed another 1-2 years of development and should have never released this year in it's current state. The problem is AGS changed the focus of the game months before it's original release in 2020 and only spent a year adding more PvE content to the game. Not only are there game breaking bugs and exploit but the PvE content they added feels slapped on and not well thought out. It's sad because the game has a good foundation and has potential to be a very good MMO but it may be too late. First impressions are critical to the long term success of an MMO and New World did not succeed here. It's not to say the game can't recover - we've seen it happen in FFXIV and other MMO's, but AGS has a long road ahead to get things turned around and from what I've seen from the dev team so far, I have my doubts its going to happen.

I've played this game since launch. I played casually and took my time getting to end game. I've gotten 400+ hours of enjoyment out of this game. I believe, at it's core, NW is a great MMO.
That being said, whoever is making decisions at NW are some of the worst managers in the game development world. (did they hire old Blizzard managers or something? Holy shit!)
The dupes that they can't get ahead of.
The constant shutting down of game features while they try to figure out how to fix an exploit.
The constant programming failures that's allows for incredibly unbalanced PvP and PvE Experiances.
The total lack of end game content other than elite chest grinds...
Wars and invasions allow the same 50 people to play in them, so typically the same 100 people do the Wars and invasions, meaning for around 1700 other people that can be logged into the server, Wars and Invasions are not content they'll be allowed to do.
    No Raids.
No way for a regular player to influence the game, or even contribute to said influence.
The constant shut down of the market, which literally halts the economy of the game for days. Making most crafting and gathering useless .
    Lore is absolute trash.
Storytelling is bad fan fiction. And by fan, I mean someone writing on a subject they have no knowledge of, in a language they aren't fluent in.
...I want this game to be good so bad, but the devs are so incompetent that for every small step forward they accidentally take, they take 3-4 huge steps backward.
I mean, how do players stay ahead of the exploits but the fucking Dev team can't even catch up?
And what is end game?!? Why am I grinding 600 GS!?! What threat am I hearing up for!?! No raid, no end game content, no end goal!!! And the Outpost rush is literally pointless!!! Winning or losing means absolutely nothing!!! It's just a gear grind that awards you with absolute shit!!!Argh!!! Makes me so frustrated...
This game is such a disappointment right now. Thanks for letting me vent.

I can't speak for everyone, but I almost always help newbies with dungeons or elites when they ask for players/help. I'm even happy to run the dungeons slowly for first timers. Ultimately though, I think the absolute worst thing an mmo can do is to make its own content irrelevant. FFXIV handles this very well with level scaling on dungeons and a wardrobe system that allows you to collect armor and weapon styles so you can collect sets you like the look of or mix and match. New World could certainly used something like this to give players incentive to run lower level areas and dungeons.

body block its trash in any game every period.. its only reasonable in PVP situations... not pve stuff...
consider that body blocking goes away when u put ur weapon away... yet counts blocks when u pull it out..
      thats STUPID..
and thats funny to me when people argue that body blocking is "immearsive" yet are silent and dont argue how its "unimmersive" when u can phase thru people when ur just casually walking around..
its stupid.. remove it... vast majority of people dislike it for clear obvious reasons.. and only place were it acually is ok and makes sense is stricktly in pvp..
a skilled player that just gets lets say in pvp jumped and body blocked in tight area could just put their holster/sheath their weapon and pass thru em..
also tons of people who play tanks who HATE BODY BLOCKING... its trash its bad..
imagine large raid dungeons and small areas and tanks and all the bs it would cause..
why should any one player have to go out of their way to worry about their poisstion and everybody else...
as it shows .. just like he said.. the stagger LOCKS.. wtf bro.. body blocking + stagger locking. .. thats TRASH... 😂
in short.. ur just cherry picking... ur ok with one form of cancer.. yet mad dont like another form of cancer that being the tall enemies in "small areas"
crazy.. its almost as if u feel exactly like the people who hate the body blocking.. 😂
body blocking in and of itself.. isnt good or bad.. what makes it good and bad is how its IMPLEMENTED.. this game is trash at it.. it requires cherry picking...
bodyblocking doesnt make fighting bunch of enemies hard.. what it does is literally for no actually good reason.. chain an ball u.. a handicap...
its literally CHEESE.. a CHEESE MECHANIC.. cheese mechanics are trash and stupid..
so i agree with u.. i like body blocking butt i like it in games where its WELL DONE and actually doesnt cheese ... 😂 in this game its trash along with the stagger lock bs... smh

The "no NPC's setting a baseline price" is, I feel, a residual from when they where looking to be a PvP sandbox. When trying to garner a more generic, casual player base, you need to set a baseline for items, and give options for players to buy and sell. Even with EVE Online, the best example of a free market system in MMOs, CCP will regulate it from time to time just with their PLEX values and availability of resources.
As for the crafting, I think it's just plain asinine to require so much iron for crafting steel, or steel for crafting starmetal. the 4x multiple is ridiculous and unrealistic, and is just used as a time sink. Plus, if you are on a well-populated server, you will literally be fighting four other players for a damn iron node. This affects both new players and veterans alike.

This review is very thorough and accurate. As a casual player I hit that wall with the MSQ where I wasn't able to complete dungeons to continue through it. Other games have learned that this sucks and no longer do that. They screwed up with that, along with thinking that swimming isn't important and repeatedly claiming that mounts aren't necessary. Mounts would make the game feel better, and they don't understand that. Giving a runspeed buff on roads is a bandaid. Thumbs up for the video.

This would have given them time to ACTUALLY fix the bugs, get fine tuning down on weapons/gear/gearsets/etc. I feel like i had fun with the 500+ hours I played but the latest patch has just ruined any type of solo/duo endgame content and running with groups of 10+ is hard because servers are dying. If only they trusted their community to help them in the open beta instead of releasing a buggy mess it would have had a much better launch. Almost everything here hit the nail on the head for me. I put 573 hours into it and really want to like it. The game wants to give you a reason to find a place in its world but it gets in its own way. The big reason why I quit was because I was tired of the economy. I was wanting to make food for people and sell it a the trading post and I farmed everything on my own but the fact that deflation is so insane means that it's super difficult to sell that, or anything. I tried switching up my merchant strategies and I just reached a point where since I was making less and less money per day, it didn't feel like I was going anywhere and I got burnt out.
New World's systems are really fun and satisfying but there's no reward at the end. Farming mobs with a zerg of people is fun until you realize what a pain watermark grind is and the head scratching systems. Farming materials is really fun until you realize you'll never make any money, and getting high level gathering means nothing as nobody wants to buy high level mats except for gems. The PVP was amazing until all of the exploits and other problems with combat made people not care about faction.
I would also add that the town management being company based detaches regular people. I can see maybe companies sponsoring an invasion but why should they control everything about the town upgrades? All faction members should have at least some say in town upgrades so people can have a stake in fighting for their faction. There also needs to be more motivation for going to war as well because I don't think the faction impact is strong enough.

This is really well done and I agree with basically everyone. I did want to at least note that a few of these cons have been/are planning to be addressed. I figure you might be aware, but I'm not sure how many people keep up to date with the forum posts and such, but here's a few of the cons that I know of that are being touched on:
    1) High tier resources costing less than low tier/crafting system revamp - This may start to change over time with the recent changes to the crafting system. It is now no longer the most effective strategy to craft the lower tier items. Instead, it's now significantly more exp to craft higher tier gear.
    2) Gold injection/sinks - This is also being touched on in a few ways. Tuning orbs were buffed, so that they're cheaper to create. I don't think it's fully there yet, but they're still making that a bit easier. It's still better to wait until high watermark before doing the expeditions, so most people just do chest runs.
2b) Having said that, they recently nerfed the chests, so this will end up taking a bit longer than before.
    3) Undocumented ninja updates - They actually addressed this in a dev blog post on 11/19, so I'm not sure if maybe you were already finished with the script by then, but their reasoning for it was these were already being worked on. In their words, "We are sorry that a number of undocumented changes made it into the 1.1 Into the Void update. This update includes many changes the team made months ago before we branched our launch build. This long time frame and the size of the patch, led to a number of changes that we missed in the release notes. This wasn’t intentional, and we are working to improve our processes to ensure more accurate release notes in the future." They did outline a bunch of things that they missed or were unintentional, and you can find the link to this post here: forums.newworld.com/t/dev-blog-update-on-current-issues-3/573313
    4) Siege lag - I'm sure this is going to be a constant battle, but they seemed to have it handled prior to the 1.1 patch, but with the addition of the void gauntlet, it seems like everything went back to how it was. Everything is lagging out again and I'm not sure why that is, but weapons like the life staff and ice gauntlet that were supposedly fixed before are now creating lag again.
Overall, I really love that you hit everything that most of us at end game are feeling. This wasn't done by someone who played a couple hours of it and then did a review, so it's very comprehensive. It's easy to tell that you really enjoy the game at heart, and want it to succeed. Watching your journey to max level series was awesome, and a lot of fun to watch while I was playing myself. This game definitely needed to be held back for another year, but I'm sure some execs at Amazon were getting frustrated at the fact that this shiny, new toy of theirs wasn't making them any money yet, and pushed AGS to release it anyway. I really hope we see more improvements coming from this and it's nice to see that they're putting in the time. Having a dev blog be posted around midnight EST really tells me that the team is putting in long hours to make this game a success. I think that speaks some volumes that they're putting in effort more than just the 9-5 of a "normal" job, and I hope to see the fruits of their labor as we go into 2022. Great video again, Craig, and hope to see more NW content in the future!

That being said there have been so many issues I do think that the players who have put in the hours you have can definitely say that they got their moneys worth. Been playing new world a lot. I'm level 60 with 300+ hours, and today I finally got my stonecutting to level 150 and was prepared to start crafting some dungeon orbs to do some dungeon runs since this is the content I enjoy most, but sadly I found out the grind to simply craft 1 orb was just way to much grind to simply enter the dungeon and get mediocre rewards at best. I'm starting to feel as new world devs make up a lot of lack of content with extra extra grind and I simply feel burned out from it. I normally welcome a grind, but new world grind makes no sense at all. I bought the game looking to do wars and fun dungeons, but they have made doing dungeons extremely hard to simply enter and my faction owns no territory now so I cant even do invasions/wars making two of the main contents I wanted to play at end game non existent. So now I'll take a semi break only loggin in once in awhile and see if major changes happen. As of right now its just not fun anymore, and that's sad cause the game has potential.

This is the first mmo i have taken an interest too since the days of World of Warcraft. i really hope the devs fix this game cuz it can be a very fun mmo if the cons(alot of them can be fixed easily) are fixed. Thank you for your review, first time watching your channel and really enjoyed your review.

I agree with everything apart from adding mega server channels.
Games like bdo and gw2 lack social aspects due to never seeing the same person again.
Nws servers may be small but its much better than having lacking a decent close knit server community.

I was one of the first on my server to hit lvl 60, quit once i hit endgame, now they made endgame even worse. Not going back until they fix stuff. Sort of hope they put out new servers once they have fixed everything. (I loved almost every second from 1-60 so for me it was well worth the money though :))

The reason you can't open the inventory while running (or doing anything else) is obvious: inventory is coded to have the player turn in place to face the camera. This is a dumb reason to have bad UI experience, but this is how they implemented it, so they'd have to change that to allow using it at other times.

Another thing that could help storage is the ability to search all storage at once vs one by one, this would allow easier finding of owned items whilst keeping the asthetic of separate towns.
I'm happy they have crafting from local storage however

Almost 360 hours playtime and today, after about a week of feeling 'bleh', ive decided to put my time in New World on hold. What you've said in this vid is pretty much spot on. Especially with the Water Mark farming, which is whats made me stop for the time being. For me, i dont find the game to have any actual content; i'm not a completionist, so gathering/crafting isnt something for me to work towards beyond anything required for townboards. I dont work the economy so again, gathering/crafting is pointless for me. Chest farming runs in Myrkgard, Eternal Pools etc are no fun either because youre body blocked endlessly and more often than not (in my case anyway) is that groups tend to skip as much trash as poss in favour of making the run quicker and 'easier', which (in my case) ends up with the groups splitting up and or getting whomped because someone pulled all the mobs trying to solo-loot a chest due to greed. I'd give dungeons a more serious look if they werent stuck behind the requirement of needing an Orb to do and if, as you said, one wasnt required to go through endless WM farming to best make use of the drops/chests in said dungeons.
Maybe i'll revisit here and there since theres no Sub required, but i'm over it at the moment and need to find a game that'll hold my attention.

I agree with most critique but I don't agree with body blocking. Warhammer online proved that body blocking is fundamental and necessary for massive PVP. You shouldn't be body blocked by friendly targets but anything red should block your movement and be able to corner you.

Stopped after hitting 55. My company disbanded and moved to other server and not a lot of players to do group events with. It is cool that u can get Epic Weapons to craft as a quest but it sucks that they come with fixed properties. Example, the fire staff that u can craft as the quest when u hit 50, has an incinerate perk, but,, I don;t use the skill. So, taking a break till they merge servers and fix these issues. I really liked it. Hope I can, again. Precise Review. Cheers!!!!

“Re-evaluate your life, close the video and fuck off” genuinely just nearly spat my brew out my mouth. But spot on, I want to love this game, I’m trying so hard to love it, but at this point (400 hours) I’m finally losing faith that they can actually competently manage the game moving forward, and I’m not playing much now due to not wanting to put more hours in a game I no longer believe in.. and I’m genuinely gutted about it.

Spot on review with the content you had. Since the Void patch, the 60+ Elites have been boosted in health to the point of absurdity. Now, the Myrk runs that took 30-45 minutes take twice as long for the same rewards. Crafting to 200 takes longer. GS elitism has now pigeon holed those who didn't stay at the top of the game. I am taking a break from NW until they resolve these issues, and I also have well over 500 hours in Launch, plus many hours since Alpha. I got my moneys worth, but that's not the point. I want NW to be long term great, but the Devs are seemingly against that concept.

    • @BobFromSeattle
      @BobFromSeattle 2 года назад +2

Actuallky, the Myrk runs now take twice as long for more *inferior* rewards. Elite chests seems to have been stealth nerfed (or bugged). As with most new games, the development path is a bit of a roller coaster, with ups and downs, so I'm not surprised at shit like this, but it is annoying when encountered.

Simply put, this is the best review of any game I have ever seen. Not only is it spot on in every way, but provides detailed explanations and solutions to all game issues. I absolutely love this game and can honestly say, if AGS just took the recommendations in this review, they could improve the game 10 fold. This review was so well thought out, I can attest that the Lazypeon is anything but lazy…well done sir. Please dont quit the game - they reverted endgame elite difficulty changes and need players like you to help this game reach its potential.

As someone who played ESO from launch day nearly up to NW’s launch (only a few breaks sprinkled in between, still over 10k hours played) I’m obviously a masochist because I can’t stop playing NW either regardless of the glaringly abysmal start of the game. It’s such a love/hate relationship because for every goofy-ass bug or system I find, I find something they’ve done so much better and I can’t stop playing for that reason alone.

im glad somebody said their opinion with both pros and cons because a lot of people are just expressing how the feel about the pros without even mentioning some of the bullshit that goes on. i got about 550 hours ingame myself, as much as i like the game i feel like every time i move 2 steps forward a dupe or exploit sends me back 4-5 steps with the devs current responses. and im still mad about my harvester set that got deleted even tho it will be replaced, thats a lot of hours spent acquiring that gear and now its wasted.

This is one reason why i wanted mounts, when they drop from bosses people farm them forever, making groups for new players/alts.

Our server is pretty much dead, Takamagahara. During primetime can expect maybe 300 people. I looked at the "World Clusters" and even if they do a combine of ALL of the servers on that cluster we would be lucky to hit 60%. This makes it a serious pain for OPR or finding groups to do anything. Getting to the point of not worth playing anymore.

[ 6:58 to 7:54 ] Couldn't have said it better, LazyPeon. Some people act so blind that they even straight up completely ignore, dismiss, deny and even defend anything negative that is in a game and is a fact just because in their mind they love/worship that game without ever questioning, pointing out and/or wanting more and better.
