OMG! Fell in love with the studio version of this song the first time I heard it years ago...epic and grand even by Prince’s standards. Never imagined he had performed it live (or at least in rehearsal). Great sound quality for a bootleg too. Thank you so much for sharing this!! ❤
I’m not 100% sure but I’m assuming was run through before he trimmed the album down; similar to rebirth of the flesh. What we do know is he gave the band cassettes of songs to learn their parts. Eric Leeds sold his via auction a few years back. So this is between December 86 and March 87 I’d argue.
Clare Fischer’s is such a huge part of this song. It’s amazing how many songs this band had in their repertoire. The Sign O’ the Times Tour Rehearsals in their entirety need to be it’s own box set. Are you listening Prince Estate?
Funky , but without that double-time kick hittin’in the beat it’s not nearly as funky as the original. Drums drive this cut!! Seemed like drums are too “in the pocket” during this performance but then again it’s rehearsal. Still nice to hear! Makes you wonder what else is out there for us to hear!
Interesting new leak... it is a new "leak" right? Few things; seems a little slow.. the tape, is not at 100% accurate speed is what I'm saying. And, interesting that Expert Lover doesn't translate too well live at the begiinng but after the bass slow, with added clap brings up the energy along with the double kick drum, and drum solo... but it's such a strange song outside of the studio version, that it gets really slow and weird, almost as if for a theatrical play... so I have to wonder if upon hearing this version... anyway, just random thoughts on this, of which I think most never have known there was a live version of.
I did wonder how the orchestration was going to be addressed. Without it it’s lacking energy a bit. Seems like it wasn’t clear how it would fit into a live show after rehearsing it
@@lukemadams in fairness, it could’ve been the very first time they played it in the rehearsal just to see if they could insert it into the live set list. Perhaps even in Prince sounds that didn’t work. Specially, since it wasn’t released. These are just my theories. You know we don’t know but it’s interesting to hear another version and sexy. Very cool. I also wonder this is just another random thought if Prince was frustrated that crystal ball never materialized as intended and he somehow wanted to release this song maybe as a B-side or on the funk Bible we don’t know. Just ideas throwing them out there. Thanks for your reply!
@@newhorizonsforfifty2833 I could be it in a little slower to learn the song, but princess voice it’s just a little deeper the slower. There’s another excellent soundboard rehearsal from the same era, where the tape clearly it’s just a little slow I’m just saying. Either way this new leaks are interesting and only shows that there’s so much more
