It's interesting that only XP was able to automatically fetch the display drivers and set the correct resolution, every other version of windows just used the default fallback resolution and would probably need windwso update/ manual install to get the drivers working correctly.
well win10 and win11 have basic drivers to work with GPUs somewhat with network cards. My I had to installed drivers for it. Meanwhile windows will search for the driver for that gpu. i tried out win 11 i will wait until next build number.
Actually, no. Only Windows 10+ is able to fetch drivers. Windows 8.1 and below will used default drivers. It was just that those has better and more default drivers built in.
I love Win 3.11. The best OS ever. I only missed the multimedia support. Every think you want with one click or a bit of typing in DOS. I loved windows Mail, Winchat, Winpop. These days you have to buy such programms...

Not ms dos, but the first "bsod" of windows, but, you see, it was not a designed error screen, so i don't think that's really the first one I depends of your concept of what is a BSoD
actually the first BSOD of Windows is Windows 3.0 however it features black background which it wouldn't be changed to blue until Windows 3.1 and the "BSOD" for Windows 1.0 and 2.x is simply a bug in the logo code which does not accept DOS versions outside versions 2.00 until 3.31 and when Windows 1.0/2.x crashes it will hang or the shell returning to dos and the first BSOD of Windows NT is the October 1991 Build of Windows NT 3.1
It's been so long since I used older Windows versions that I hadn't realized just how vague the details shared by the installer had gotten over the years. Particularly from 8 on.
Would've been cool if you'd have created a file in Win1 and had it remain accessible in each iteration throughout the in-place upgrades through to Win11.
@@deskseven Good point - I hadn't considered that. I suppose it'd be possible up to Win10 - as 32-bit was still available, and there was always an upgrade path from the 16-bit era to 32-bit. It was only with Win 11 that 32-bit wasn't an option.
For a second I thought maybe it was possible to upgrade 32 to 64 bit, but he clean installs at Windows XP. Still impressive to go for the first 64 bit version.

Could you keep all the files from Windows 1 in Windows 11? I think that if you choose upgrade every time ( I couldn’t see if you chose upgrade or custom because it was really fast ) and you write a text document in Windows 1 you will be able to read it in Windows 11
The 2GB FAT16 drive was nuked when updating to Windows XP from Windows ME. As Windows XP was an x64 version, Vista x64 required a clean install, then every version after that was a proper upgrade.

Well I did erase the drive when installing XP, as it was a x64 version making it impossible to upgrade.
Windows 8.1 wasn't so bad. I loved how responsive it was

I manually set the resolution on Windows XP. Then I decided to stay with 1024x768 for the rest of the OSes for consistency.

Installed Win 3.11 once with 11 floppy disks :). Windows 95 was such a huge milestone and afaik the first time they introduced "plug and play".

@Windows XPNew I think 46GB was used total. Right now the hard drive size is 34.4GB (lots of system files are removed + replaced during an upgrade)
