I was impressed that, for it's time, this video was pretty honest about the unfair conditions that black people were subject to. I'm actually surprised to see so many people complaining in the comments, when I see complaints for other video stating that the reality of black folks life and circumstances aren't addressed in them.
Did u hear how condescending? we are most "at home" in the arts with our creativity and sensitivity ? No extra adjectives when showing us learning the sciences. So typical.
Remember these were educational films, and I think they were trying to normalize the issue to American youth. In the context of its time, it's an early step meant to break down the walls of dissasociation that had been created through years of segregation.
It was about much more than validation. At the core, the struggle is about receiving some small measure of recompense for work and contributions to the society. Sort of like, the same or similar issue for the revolutionary war, taxation without representation. Paying into a system that gives you nothing in return. Or depositing money in the bank and not being able to make a withdrawal. The struggle cannot be reduced to simply asking for validation.
Back then people were happy to sacrifice, in order to provide an improved life for their children. Most people's families came to America dirt poor, not speaking the language, but they endured because they knew their children could integrate and become a member of this society. America can be very harsh to those who want to get more out of society than they put into it, but warmly embraces those it recognizes as wanting to honestly contribute.
Say what you want but blacks are still portrayed more positive in this vid than what I see on WorldStar Hip Hop, instagram, tv shows, rap vides, etc. This is better than Nicky Minaj's anaconda vid or Jayz's "Big pimpin" vid.

The achievements you see black people making at the time this piece of propaganda was made, we were doing it during reconstruction. You know the rest of the story. Back then racial prejudice was overt, but no one denied the reason for Black poverty. These days racism shows up in denial that those reasons still exist, and prejudice is subtle. Lynching was rampant but everyone knew the enemy. Extrajudicial killing of Black people still happens today but they refuse to acknowledge racial motivations. It's hard to think of it as being worse, given the great strides achieved by Black Americans to liberate themselves and fight for rights. But I imagine it must be frustrating as all get out. In 2018, legislation changes and social attitudes seem to be reversing many of the advances Black people fought and died for. In sociological terms, the Civil Rights era birthed “The Black Underclass” with desegregation, upper and middle class blacks could move into white neighborhoods. Those who couldn’t or wouldn’t were left in all black neighborhoods without resources or role models. When areas were segregated, Black folks had their own morticians, doctors, teachers and lawyers. So young people could see them and aspire to be successful. The uprisings in the 60s as well as development of interstate highways (many of which intentionally used eminent domain to displace black home owners without adequate compensation). The crack epidemic. Reality TV. Gangsta Rap. Cointelpro. Jerri Curls. All forms and levels of genocide. But, that being said, there have always been smart people and ignorant people. We are living through a strange time where ignorance seems to be rewarded. In the past, you really had to over achieve to “make it.” While the keys to success are still the same (education, hard work), we are all conditioned for immediate gratification. But I like today better than the past. I wish there was less waste and less pollution and more giving back. But the fact that you can literally google Black Underclass or New Jim Crow on RUclips, and get the same information that college kids a are paying for can only be a good thing.

I heard a narrator speaking positively about a group of people who had extremely hard living circumstances and history but were striving with each generation to make progress. So young people could see them and aspire to be successful. The uprisings in the 60s as well as development of interstate highways (many of which intentionally used eminent domain to displace black home owners without adequate compensation). The crack epidemic. Reality TV. Gangsta Rap. Cointelpro. Jerri Curls. All forms and levels of genocide. But, that being said, there have always been smart people and ignorant people. We are living through a strange time where ignorance seems to be rewarded. In the past, you really had to over achieve to “make it.” While the keys to success are still the same (education, hard work), we are all conditioned for immediate gratification. But I like today better than the past. I wish there was less waste and less pollution and more giving back. But the fact that you can literally google Black Underclass or New Jim Crow on RUclips, and get the same information that college kids a are paying for can only be a good thing.
I think the people in this video know that they are being filmed. It seems fake. The narrator sounds low key condescending.

Again, I think people hear what they want to hear. I heard a narrator speaking positively about a group of people who had extremely hard living circumstances and history but were striving with each generation to make progress. A people that loved their family, their community and God. A people that valued education and encouraged talent. But of course, to you, that's "low key condescending".
