Using hose to prevent abrasion is a great idea - highly recommended. I use it all the time and keep a bin of various sizes of old hoses I've removed from cars (free stuff - better still :). QUICK TIP: Spiral cutting the hose with a utility knife and then wrapping it around the harness has the following advantages: A. It works to transition 'Ys' in the harness. And two spiral cut hoses can be interwoven to cover the junction of branches in a harness. B. A spiral cut hose won't retain water like a split hose might if the cut was on the upper side. C. A spiral cut hose stays in place on tight bends without tape or zip ties. D. The hose doesn't need to be the 'right size'. A hose with an ID smaller than the OD of the harness can still work. E. And spiral cut hoses can be used to hold a harness together temporarily while troubleshooting, testing, or rewiring. When done, you can be taping up the harness while unwinding the spiral, saving the need for an extra hand. (Keep it around for the next time)
I've used the same method for years. If you've ever run into an Ecoboost F150 where the harness rubs through on the front diff cover, it's the only way to make sure it won't happen again.

I had a Ford F 350 utility truck that I bought used. After well over 100K miles The front fuel tank became unusable, so I replaced the pump (mounted in the tank) and it worked for a few months and then quit again. I figured there was a problem in the switching valve or the dash mounted switch (fired the parts cannon) but still no luck. I finally started to unwrap the wiring harness overwrap and encountered electrical tape. Under the tape there was a corroded crimp connector. I think they had pinched the harness when installing the utility body, spliced the wire with a crimp and taped the hell out of it. The repair lasted 12 years. Like you, I soldered it and my repair lasted another 180 K miles until I scrapped the truck. You really don't anticipate broken wires in a harness that looks undisturbed.

Eric, I don't think your gift for finding wires is uncanny,. Rather, you find them because you know where to look; and you know what kind of problem to look for (short, ground, open?); you know it's broken before you start looking because you checked the voltage at the pcm. Rather than uncanny, I just figure its a case of "the more you know, the luckier you get." Thank you for that reminder about what the farmer's do for us. Their's is a hard job with little thanks! Very good find and repair. The hose trick works great so does split loom twisted around the harness with several wire ties both on the ends and in the middle where the harness rubs and moves on that brace. It will take a long time for the wire ties to wear down and break from rubbing on the brace. Another way is a large tie around the brace and harness then a second tie that pulls tight the first tie between the harness and brace keeping the harness off the brace and tight in place. Learned that one a long time ago.
Definitely a knack for finding broken wires when you follow the process (the Eric O diagnostic process, of course) and have a wiring diagram. You unearthed it from it's cow crap tomb in record time, though!
I approve your soldering and protecting the taped wires with heater hose. Very good work finding the defective wire so quickly. Yes, your talents come from God. Hope you had a great lunch. Is that tall girl Trinity? They grow up so fast!
Soldering is the best way to make a permanent wire repair! I like Scotch 88 the best too, but usually used Scotch 44 most the time, but switched to the 88 in the winter when the best, more flexible wire was definitely worth the extra $

Had a transmission change done - a while after I kept getting ABS lights... Two years later I finally tracked down 3 cuts in a wire - which must have been done while the transmission was being replaced. So annoying!!!
That's a very useful gift to have in your line of work. Bravo for the farmer who owns this truck. The cows that donated that "crud" might have also provided the milk for good things like Chobani yogurt.
14:55 I worked at a Buick/GMC/Chevy dealership in high school and occasionally, I'd fill in for the lube guy when he'd have some time off. The dealer was solidly in farm country - NW Iowa- and a lot of the farmers would drop their truck off while they were having coffee with the boys at the local cafe. Needless to say, they were running their truck through the local car wash before they dropped them off and more than a few times, I had to scrape 🐷🐖 and 🐄🐄 💩💩 from the things just to get the thing properly lubed since this was before the days of the "lifetime" suspension components. And Eric, you're right. Dry crusty poo is much better than soft and wet poo.
You do have a great ability to find broken wires because of training and experience as well as your methodical approach to your electrical work. You are also a great instructor and mentor for all those mechanics starting out there. Too many people get all flustered when it comes to electrical work and don't follow your methodical approach. The rest couldn't find a cross in a Church. Keep up the great work!
I work on ag stuff, and i give farmers a hard time for not cleaning their equipment. I have printout of service calls from one guy who NEVER cleaned his tractor, visit him about once a year to replace a rotten hose, rusted hydraulic line, corroded wire etc. Common denominator, could have been prevented with cleaning. Cleaning is maintenance, just as much as greasing!
Your ability to find or sniff out broken wires is certainly a gift... quite likely your super power. We never get to choose our super powers, they choose us! So glad you have found a way to use your power for good! As always, thanks for the video

Another way is a large tie around the brace and harness then a second tie that pulls tight the first tie between the harness and brace keeping the harness off the brace and tight in place. Learned that one a long time ago.
No gift, thats the years of heavy truck and equipment repair at your Dads shop. Amazing how we never forget our lessons from the past.
Hey Eric! Happy Friday and happy broken wire hunting!
Another great repair. Your experience and logistic approach is the reason you always find the problem. Wash your hand before you eat lunch. 😂
Always an education in every video. We appreciate all your gifts!
I'm not a farmer, but I love the respect you give to farmers. We all got full bellies because of them. Thanks Eric and thanks farmers. :)
SMA is on fire 🔥 keep em coming
When you went into the office after finding the broken wire I wondered if you were going to find out if it really was your lucky day.
Our soldiers keep us free, while our farmers keep us fed. God Bless to both.
Definitely a knack for finding broken wires when you follow the process (the Eric O diagnostic process, of course) and have a wiring diagram. You unearthed it from it's cow crap tomb in record time, though!
love the way Eric O uses his unique way to diagnose electrical problems (the best) I have learned so much with his videos
The hunt for red October!
It may not be an official Spiritual Gift but you may thank God for Blessing you with an ability to find the problem quickly.
Fantastic job as always!
Your sense of smell returning just in time for that farm truck.
Thank you as always Eric! Your logical way of finding these issues is top notch. Keep the videos coming! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I approve your soldering and protecting the taped wires with heater hose. Very good work finding the defective wire so quickly. Yes, your talents come from God. Hope you had a great lunch. Is that tall girl Trinity? They grow up so fast!
Gotta say trying to trace down harness issues might be one of the jobs I dread the most and just seeing that it can go well gives me some confidence
Yes Eric you are the chosen on wires Keep up the good work
Awesome troubleshooting and your broken wire finding is amazing.
Man trinity has gotten so big. Can't believe I have been watching the SMA channel this long
Soldering is the best way to make a permanent wire repair!
I like Scotch 88 the best too, but usually used Scotch 44 most the time, but switched to the 88 in the winter when the best, more flexible wire was definitely worth the extra $
That's a bunch of residue you had to dig through to make repairs. That's what makes your garden grow. Most excellent!
Just like scannerdanner says, heat, vibration, or places that cause chaffing and you'll find the broken wire. Or in your case, divine intervention. :)
Eric another great job!! Concerning spiritual gifts you have healing; working of miracle's ;word of wisdom;;word of knowledge;gift of faith;;;using them well and often!!
Age related vision degradation is so annoying. You can use reading glasses and magnifiers, but it's not as handy as when we had "young eyes".
AMEN BROTHER! I'VE HAD 1 CATARACT REPAIRED AND 1 BEEN PUTTING OFF. I CAN SEE DISTANCE, RELATIVELY, WITH 1, AND CLOSE UP, RELATIVELY, WITH THE OTHER, IT'S HARD EITHER WAY. TEXTING, THIS COMMUNICATION IS HARD TO SEE. I'VE HAD BAD VISSION MY WHOLE LIFE, BUT NOW IT'S DEGENERATING AS YOU SAID. YOUTH IS WASTED ON THE YOUNG. 🙂💖
I was able to completely blow the mind of a body tech at work a few weeks ago using the "mini roll." It brought me back to how my mind was blown learning about it from the one and only Mr. O.
Thanks for these videos. Love your commitment to your work. It’s refreshing to know there’s still great mechanics out there.
The wire whisperer……..
I’ve used the zipped tied sliced rubber hose protection on semi tractors a bunch. Tons of vibration. On water hoses, electrical, air lines…you name it. Another great video
Great job Eric. Love the repairs.
Your seasoned intuition and data driven approach is key to your success.
Luke you have the force, let it be with you. The force is strong.
Eric I think a taste test is in order to determine the substance on bottom of that RAM 😁
So much fun working on the ranch vehicles with "Shtuff" covering the whole undercarriage. At least it wasn't fresh "shtuff"
When I start posting my vids on RUclips, I want my intro to be as smooth and crisp as Eric’s “Hey there viewers , welcome back to the south main auto channel” . Always a pleasure watching your vids!
Eric I agree it is a God given talent, everyone has a God given talent, I'm glad you share yours with all of us, and a shout out to the farmers, 👍
